More Badges/Industry affialiate thing

Firewrath9

For industry affiliates and other people, (i'm using @jonnyGURU as an example sorry lol), because some people doesn't know that he works for Corsair, and that he specializes in PSUs, thus perhaps add a badge such as Corsair, or add "Corsair Industry Affiliate" (would apply to others as well), and perhaps a badge such as "PSU expert", (doesn't have to be for just industry affliates). Also, can there be a list of affiliates (they can opt in or out) so if we have any issues we can talk to them (i.e. if you want to talk to cablemod, but don't know thier tag (even though its just cablemod, others may be different such as jonnyguru, which can't really be associated with Corsair unless you delve in deeper.))

If you did that, I would stop posting here forever.  Just like I did over at HardForum.  I am NOT here as a representative of Corsair or to support their hardware. That's Corsair Nick's job.

Bad enough I have "industry affiliate" next to my name at all.

Just deal with it. It means that you are IA of LMG. Aka either work for tech industry, another tech channel or review site. Maybe you should quit your day job if you want to get rid of IA badge.

Most of the IAs have account name or sig stating their affiliations. Imo rest could be banned if they show bias for or against certain brands without disclosing their affiliations to those brands. And yes, that's covered under IA CoC, but I think it may be enforced little lightly once badge is applied.

List of every industry affiliate (every user with that title):

https://linustechtips.com/main/search/?&type=core_members&joinedDate=any&group[13]=1

I'm pretty sure this forum, couple years ago now, used to have badges such as "PSU expert", "GPU expert", etc. but those were removed a long time ago.

Not sure why they were removed, but I can imagine it has to do with 'enforcing the quality of the bad'. As in, the mods  can't be going around checking if every "PSU expert" is actually giving out good PSU advice and is not just using that badge to spread misinformation.

I think there was recommendation about those, along with "Trusted Member" badge. But trusted members got all promoted to moderators so it was removed. And I think main reason it wasn't kept up was that its extremely hard to say if member will uphold their title as "trusted" or not. Like who gets promoted to that position, member who has personal knowledge about subject, or one with actual education and work experience on subject. What is time frame looked at when evaluating postings, 6 months or 2 years and so on.

I personally think "Industry affiliate" is appropriate, but that's just me.

The only problem with the list is "How do I know who to tag?" Corsair specifically has five representatives but only is active anymore. To the best of my knowledge none of the Coolermaster Reps are here anymore, and many of the other reps from other brands either have never posted or also have long left (Newegg, NZXT, PPCS, EK, "JoshFractal" is an old account, FractalJosh is his new account but he doesnt have Affiliate Status). Seagate, VIVO, Cablemod, and MNPCTech (Bill) are the only Industry affiliates I really see anymore (Also AAJoe but I'm actually not familiar with him) and of course I'm not noting Jonny because he's already here.

Companies having Industry representatives on forums can be fantastic. My ISP has representatives on a local Aussie based tech forum that I am a member of, and they have their own dedicated sub-forum. Their reps even includes the owner/managing director of the ISP who frequents the forums and keeps users updated on planned network upgrades or any unplanned emergency outages, as well as occasionally doing AMAs. It's pretty handy if your internet is down and you can jump on to a forum and just post asking if there's an issue with the local exchange and get a response in a few minutes letting you know if there's a network issue or if it's a problem on your end - usually ends up being faster than calling.

I would hazard a guess and say most aren't active, or the company has replaced the person handling the social media relations (ie probably why there's half a dozen Industry Affiliates that pop up when you type "[at]Corsair...").  There's even 3 Industry Affiliates listed for NCIX :D

Most people won't know that you work for Corsair unless you (or someone else) mentions it. It's not as if you have any Corsair related material or branding shown. Heck, most people probably think that the Industry Affiliate tag would be because of association with Jonnyguru.com (though, that in itself may be an issue).

Not sure what the forums policy is, but if the tag bothers you then maybe message @Whiskers or @colonel_mortis about the possibility of having it removed.
For you, given the contexts of your posts, I just see it as more of a "Verified" tag rather than indicating you representing any company. If they don't want to remove the tag, then maybe they can create & assign you to a "Verified' user group instead (but the problem then is every kid that has a Twitch channel with 6 followers thinks they deserve a Verified tag).

The way the forum works means that this would be rather sucky to implement. Based on other forums I've seen, I'm going to take a guess that the Industry Affiliate tag is just a group that you assign a user in to. To have specialised groups for each company would require creating dozens, or even hundreds of groups which is just untidy and difficult to manage from an admin perspective. It's not even beneficial since most reps usually identify the company they're representing anyway (Corsair Nick, Seagate Surfer, CableMod, etc)

HELL NO!
That's a whole level of ego boosting that the forum doesn't need.
I definitely wouldn't want anyone to be labelled as an "expert" in any field on the forums, because then suddenly it implies that their post/opinion must be somehow more correct than someone elses who doesn't have the tag. "Oh, they must be right they're marked as a PSU Expert, I'll ignore everything else the other people are saying"... Will hamper critical thinking and sensible debates, and some people will take it too far thinking their shit don't stink just because they have the tag.
Might stop people from questioning the arguments that people make if they have that tag as well, and questioning and criticising points made by others can be a really good way to learn or change peoples minds.

I mostly hang around here to help when someone has a question regarding our stuff, but I'll also comment on something else now and then if I happen to run by it and have something to add (or if I can crack a dumb joke).  As an assistant to customer service, I'm usually at my computer anyway, so why not have an extra tab open for a forum or two?

This is pretty much why we originally created it - in the same way Twitter has a way to discern legitimate accounts from everyone else, it was more to protect brand reputation.

What's ironic about that is I cannot get Twitter to "verify" jonnyguru as a brand.  (it is actually trademarked in the U.S.)

You may have posted some naughty stuff in the past that they might not like much, have you? ;)

In other circles, the Blue Checkmark is seen as something bad for various reasons (some say they changed it to "endorsed by Twitter" as its almost impossible for a "normal user" to get verified these days)

That's not the main Problem.

The main Problem is: Who decides that?
How?
Why?

And when was that title awarded?

Basically it becomes "political" at that point, meaning a dumpster fire...

Lets just assume that someone was very interested in Graphics Card Technology and knows everything inside and out. Got awarded the Title "Graphics Card Expert" or something like that. Back when Glide was still somewhat of a thing and people talked about it. And/or it had advantages for various reasons to use that (for example Wing Commander Prophecy).

Fast forward 20 years and that person list interest 10 years ago or so, when it got really complicated with Shaders and all that other stuff. And now he spouts just utter bullshit that makes no sense. Like "get that Card, it has higher Pixelfillrate, that's important to fill pixels!!111" Or other weird shit. For example he can't tell the difference between a 6 pin and an 8 pin PCIe Connector and other stuff...

You see that this Title might look like a good idea but the more you think about it, the less sense it makes.

Becoming an expert is just the good old hard work. Read stuff about what you're into and think about it. And discuss it with other people...

I fall under both categories essentially.  I assist customer service, but I also work with the products themselves as part of the product development and quality team.  This can actually work out pretty well since I can find out about problems quickly and then work on a possible solution without the need for a middle-man, or find out what people have been wanting but no one makes (or no one makes for a reasonable price) and then come up with something to fill the need.  Listening to customers has resulted in some of our best improvements and most popular product lines.  Of course, not every idea for a new product or improvement can be done, but we do the best we can.
