Best testing benchmark programs for the newbie

Hello, I have just had a custom PC built mainly to start looking at VR flight sims and games.

 

I come from a long term Mac background and am very familiar with the Mac OS and how it works.

 

My issue is that I have been trawling through the sites and see builds and people overclocking and using all varieties of benchmark software looking at CPU performance, GPU performance, stress tests etc and it has all become a bit confusing as there are many programs out there but I am not really sure what is the best and or what they are actually testing definitively and what is the best way to systematically test a system, perform a change and then retest the system. I know this is probably common knowledge for the advanced users on the site but I also know that you do have videos for the newbies with awareness but lack the in depth knowledge that a lot of long term builders have.

 

Is there a video showing benchmarks and how you guys use them to overclock a system or assess a part change (eg upgrading a graphics card)? Also I see videos of overlays of clock speed/temperature etc and FPS on games being tested but I am not sure what underlying program is producing them (I know GeForce has the FPS in the corner and I think AIDA64 does some overlays but once again...so many programs.....so confusing an array.

 

Is it possible to do a how to benchmark properly video for Newbies?

Yes you just need RivaTuner that comes with MSi Afterburner

This might solve your problems, I don't use this for overclocking because it takes too long, Instead I use Cinebench for CPU overclocking, and Aida64 memory benchmark for RAM overclocking, and for the GPU I just use games

As for overlays, I personally use HWinfo and Rivatuner, but that requires some configuration to get things the way you want them, but using MSI Afterburner with Rivatuner might be a lot easier, havent used it but I assume it's simple

HWinfo is my hardware monitoring software choice

Afterburner for GPU tuning

Motherboard bios for CPU and memory tuning

Cinebench R15/R20 for checking CPU performance in the form of a score

Prime95 small FFT for testing ultimate CPU stability

AIDA64 CPU stress (not FPU) for CPU stability without AVX

AIDA64 memory and cache benchmark for RAM performance (in actual data)

Prime95 blend test for testing memory stability (and a bit of CPU).

 

GPU stress testing is more difficult. so far I use Final Fantasy 15 (a game) for the testing as it is more stressful than even 3Dmark Fire Strike or Unigine Heaven and the most stressful test I have used so far.

 

Rivatuner Statistics Server (RTSS) is the name for the software displaying hardware information in games and benchmarks. HWinfo and MSI Afterburner can both support RTSS, the former is more detailed but not as newcomer friendly comparing to the latter one.

uniengine heaven, uniengine valley, ffxv benchmark, furmark, reflections rtx tech demo, uniegine superposition,unreal engine 4 elemental, and for gpu/gaming benchmarking all FREE apps and 3dmark has a demo

 

cinebench, prime95,intelburntest, all FREE apps for benchmarking cpu/other and 3dmark has a demo

 

most can be found on techpowerup.com guru3d.com majorgeeks.com and elsewhere
