8700K @ 5.2Ghz, need help!

Hi all, I'd like to ask for some help with my 5.2Ghz OC on my 8700K. I can get it to run perfectly stable at 5.1Ghz @ 1.300v and everything else set to auto, and I get perfectly good temps under load and otherwise like this, and an average score in Cinebench R15 of 1600cb, with R20 returning a tad over 4000 on average.  When I push up to 5.2Ghz, I had to increase my voltage up to about 1.39-1.40, my temps remained pretty good, 85-90 C under full load, I set my negative AVX offset to 2 and I set my IA DC and IA AC load lines to .01.  I see a performance increase in R15 of about 50 points on average, up to about 1650-1660, but R20 sees no gain at all.  I looked at my clocks underload, in R15 it holds at 5.2Ghz stable, (5.17Ghz in task manager), but in R20 it immediately drops to 5Ghz (4.99Ghz in task manager) and stays there, and as I said before, I see no performance gain at all.  The computer is perfectly stable at 5.2Ghz, but I'm stumped by the clock throttling in R20, as my temps once again, under load in R20, never exceeded 90C.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

That's because R20 uses AVX and, like you just said yourself, you've set your AVX-offset to -2.

Ah. Thank you, I was unaware R20 was an AVX workload. I’ll push that back up then. Thanks!

8700K owner here.

I've pushed mine to as high as 5.3GHz @ somewhere around 1.325-1.35v. 5.2 GHz at around 1.3v.

Got 4052 on R20 at 5.2GHz and 551 (Single Core) on R20 at 5.3GHz.

I can't find my R15 scores, and don't feel like OC'ing that hard right now to get new ones. (I leave it at 4.8GHz for daily use. Keeps temps down, but still performs great).

Definitely seems strange that you're not getting much from the higher clock speeds. Do you have other programs running while benchmarking? What's your RAM speed?

Are your scores are a bit low for 5.1?

At 5.0, newest windows and bios w/meltdown fixes, my 8700k does about 1660 in CB R15 and slightly over 4000 in CB R20.

Hi!  Thanks for the reply.  I found out it was my AVX offset, I did not realize that R20 was an AVX workload.  I just put my AVX offset back to zero and was able to dial back a little voltage and keep stable, I put down 4101cb in R20 @ 5.2.  I typically run mine @ 5.1 because I can run stable 5.1 at 1.25-1.28v, whereas I have to use a bit more than that for 5.2.  I have yet to try for 5.3, but I am delidding soon and I will try then.  No other programs running, I made sure to kill iCue, afterburner, etc.  My RAM is running at 3200Mhz.

I need to update my BIOS.  Running a Strix Z390-E Gaming and I have not updated my BIOS.  I'll do that and run tests again at 5.1, see what I get.

Newer bios might have more meltdown Spectre fixes and reduces performance

I lost a couple of points going from stock bios to F12a with the fixes

Hey Plutosaurus my friend how come 1.355v for 5Ghz ?  OP does that with 1.30v or so.  But the load temps of 85 to 90c is unexcitable for me.  Do not run Prime95.  Use AIda64 stability test.  Synthetic tests will put stress on a CPU that no real world app will do giving you 10c more heat and abusing your CPU.  70'c in Aida is more normal and safe.

Every chip is different. Some can get 5ghz at 1.2, some can't get 5.0ghz at all.

I can get 5.1 @ 1.4, but I'm not comfortable with that.

I delidded my chip and with a medium level cooler, I never go above 65c in regular tasks and only to 80 in RealBench.

Fan is silent. Got it for the bling bling

Yes 1.4v is too much.  But honestly 5Ghz or 5.2Ghz there is no way you will tell a difference so I guess it's not worth it.
