So i think this would be a good viedo for tech linked. I was watching memes and ear rape started to come up and it hurt my ears. Then i thought why doesn't normal music hurt you ears and and why does ear rape music hurt your ears. What makes that type of music speacial

So you're wondering why loud music hurts?

Because it's loud.

 

Sarcasm aside, the defining factor of "ear-rape" is its volume. Due to that, it's not only annoying but possibly painful/damaging depending on duration/volume.

I think ear rape noises (not music if you hate them) only have a single tone of extreme frequency. Music are a mix of tunes.

Many YouTube videos normalize those videos that are at ridiculous volumes so they aren't as loud.

This seems like a silly topic but clearly it actually wouldn't be a bad idea for them to do it.

 

There's two reasons:

1. It's loud.  This may be obvious in hindsight, but it's partly as simple as that.  Digital audio is stored as a sequence of numbers that represent the waveform.  Most videos will not take full advantage of the entire range and thus, if you set your system volume such that they sound about right, videos which use more of this range, or indeed all of it, will obviously be louder.  As an aside, this is why I recommend using a compressor with make-up gain to raise the volume of quiet videos rather than turning up your system volume - that way when a louder one comes along, it's not actually louder at all.
2. It's distorted.  It's well known that high-quality audio products make listening more pleasurable to the point where you can turn them up dangerously loud without realizing it.  Obviously this effect extends in the negative direction as well - highly distorted or poor quality audio will be grating to listen to and feel louder than it is.

I am gonna butt in say that pure sounds are exhausting to listen to. I use a metal detector at work and it’s a pain on the ears. Fortunately, I only need it for small bursts at a time. 

 

There’s also something to be said about the element of surprise. If your ears get used to quiet sounds and then you blast something loud then it will hurt.

It’s not special. It’s more so physics than computers. The waveforms of the audiofile exceed the range of the speaker or audio processor.

There was a story on the news a couple years back about a kid that blew out his eardrums in a matter of seconds by modding headphones for stupid loud music. Is that what "ear rape" is?

As for what it is, have you seen "deep fried memes"?  Basically think the audio version of that.  It's anything amplified to the point of extreme clipping/distortion.
