BOINC Pentathlon 2019

Go to solution Solved by jakkuh_t,

Seems like the easiest way for most people to help out is in the Marathon.

This involves downloading BOINC, selecting the "World Community Grid" project, and then selecting the sub-project "OpenZIKA".

1. Download + Install BOINC (https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

2. Open BOINC and click "Add Project"

3. Select the "World Community Grid" project, and then click on their website url. (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/discover.action)

4. On their Website, click "Join Now" at the top left or right depending. Enter your information and Register.

5. Once presented with the Sub project selection, choose "OpenZIKA" and click next. It will download a program, but you don't need it.

6. Go back to the BOINC app and click "Next >". Login with the World Community Grid account that you just signed up for.

Your BOINC app will now benchmark your system, and then start running.

BUT, you still need to set your team to the LTT forum one.

7. Navigate to the team selection page, and login if you aren't already (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/team/viewMyTeam.do)

8. Type in "LinusTechTips" in the "Contains:" field.

9. Click on the "LinusTechTips_Team" result that shows up. Once the page loads click "Join Team".

You will now be BOINCing for the LTT team :D

This is the easiest way to help out the cause, but there are more beneficial / advanced ways to do so if you're interested. Refer to the OP for more information.

I also don't know if this work benefits from HT either. On my systems I noticed a per-CPU reported power consumption of about 85W running 75% threads, and 80W running 50% threads on E5-2650. To me it is questionable if that is doing more work, or if the power difference is simply from the HT overhead. I wouldn't worry about it as long as over 50% threads are in use at a given time, as at least every core has work to do.

Not a bad way of monitoring that, I'll track mine over time and see. These servers have really good power monitoring and history so easily done.

Turn them off. Link should take you to your account settings page when logged in.

Most of my tasks were all ECM, think it saw all my memory and threw out mostly those because of it, or everyone else has them disabled. Only had around 20% Siever.

@Ben Quigley, ok, it seems BOINC don't make a cc_config.xml on default anymore.

But, one can still be made for the client to read.

Make, apply, and then unmake and save a trivial change to one of the Event Log Options (Ctrl+Shift+F, from BOINC Manager).  This causes BOINC to build a cc_config.xml with the client defaults.

Then make sure it has this and restart BOINC:

<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>

Cant seem to make it work, any chance you could make the file and just tell the me the file path to drop it?

Checked in to see my points generated and it seems like my 8600K is working overtime.

Not sure if these are good point production for an 8600K, but I'm happy with how much it's done.

Also, is there a place I can look to see how much total points I've generated?

2 socket only, the first number denoted how many sockets is supports i.e. E5-4560 = 4 sockets. Those older Opterons weren't any good compared to Sandy onward though, 16 rather weak cores vs 8 much strong so it's way to hard to say which is better generically.

Edit:

Unless you meant the Opteron which in that case yes it's supported, same deal first number = sockets supported.

Crap you're right. I forgot the 2670's only run up to 2 SKU. I can look into the E5-4XXX chips but I'm not sure how much those would cost even today.

and get outta here with your office provided equipment we only deal in self-provided equipment. Let me see you keep up with me just with what you have at home.

Looks like we are faltering on the marathon,

Don't move resources away from yo-yo if you are crunching that for us but can we all check up on your rigs to see if we can work out why we are losing production?

@leadeater can you let me know when those new systems are online, still could do with the 50/50 split as first requested. Remember to assign one project per machine is possible as project switching is glitchy af.

still crunching yoyo, but now with a slight overclock on the 1950X doing 3.85Ghz on all cores! :D

this did lower my F@H PPD on the GPU's in the same loop tough, so i guess right now it's a battle for cooling resources..

sometimes i love SFF watercooling, sometimes i really hate it.

@Ben Quigley Okay so I seem to have run out of GPU projects for Einstein, and now my computer is only doing the CPU ones. I have 66 of them pending transfer, do you know how to get more GPU tasks?

also have you changed the setting for storing WUs?
