GTX 980 Ti power requirement

Killervolt

Hey guys,

So I finally upgraded to my dream card of 2015 . . . the GTX 980 Ti. This is the first part of a long upgrade process. The question I have is that my PSU has only 2x 6 pin PCIe power connectors, whereas the 980ti needs 2x 8 pins. I’m getting a new PSU in the next few weeks, but for the time being would it be possible/safe to just use the 2 six pins and plug them into the card? If I underclock it a bit and reduce the power limit would it still run? Thanks.

It'll probably not work... maybe nothing happens or maybe it boots up but locks you on those "PLUG IN ALL PCI-e POWER CONNECTORS" screens.

Thanks for all the replies, I'll give it a go with just the 6 pins and let you know how it goes :)

Did you just tell him to use the CPU power connectors?

this is the pics what i did... my power supply didn't had ether 6 or 8 pin connectors i take a multimeter and found not useful 12V cables coming from PCU cut them and soldered on 8 pin connector... on 8 pin connector you need 3- 12V cables  and ather 5 is just ground... you can see pics what it looks like.

OK thanks for the info! I'll probably still wait for my new PSU though :)

sorry, just saw this :) I'm getting a corsair CX550M as I can get it for cheap- should still be able to power my system right?

Also I tried powering with just the 2 6-pin connectors and got the "Plug in all power cables" error when booting up. Just for future reference :D

Its fine. Just don't go crazy on the oc. Leave it on stock settings.

i5 2400 | ASUS RTX 4090 TUF OC | Seasonic 1200W Prime Gold | WD Green 120gb | WD Blue 1tb | some ram | a random case
