Tesla Unveils FSD Computer and More at Autonomy Day

S w a t s o n

So this kind of flew under the radar but tesla has unveiled it's complete compute hardware solution today on a livestream. Quite interesting.

Some specs

Quote

Entire computer TDP of 100W

2 Identical fully custom SoC's each running the self driving algortihim and comparing to each other for agreement

I'm still watching it so I might add more later.

The previous computer was a custom Drive PX2 from Nvidia with the following specs:

2x Tegra X2 ( 4x Denver 8x Cortex A57)

1x Parker GPGPU

4 FP32 TFLOPS

10-12 DL TOPS (Compared to 72 TOPS on the new chip)

60w TDP

I should point out that Nvidia's announced but unseen (?) Drive PX Pegasus is spec'd at 320 TOPS vs the 144 total TOPS of this system but Pegasus is at a TDP of 500W vs TDP of 100W here.

If you can it would be interesting if you could find and post the details of previous SoCs Tesla have used, wasn't the original Gen 1 from Nvidia?

So basically, they're saying humans already drive using cameras (eyes) and a neural net (brain), so cars will be able to do the same, and all this talk of lidar being required is nonsense. I'll believe it when I see it I guess, I love my Model X as it is, so all the software improvements that keep coming are just a bonus. I'm more curious to see the inevitable S/X refresh coming this year, it doesn't make sense that the premium vehicles have many features which are inferior to the 3. Also, the new Roadster, Semi, Pickup, and other Tesla projects actually getting out of the lab.

Doesn't really have much in the way of specs, I'll have look at it better later and figure out which Drive PX2 it likely is and compare these. 600 GFLOPs seems rather low but I imagine the chip is customized to the instructions it'll be doing so that's likely closer to actual performance than something more GPU based where you really don't have a great idea how well the it's doing the task etc.

Apparently the gpu is basically just there to post process what the neural network cant, it's usage is low and will get lower over time. As for the Drive PX2 the second link shows it's a custom one with only1 gpu and 1 soc but a larger board with more shit

Oh actually 2.5 has 2 of the parker SoC's but only 1 GPU, truly right in the middle of the normal nvidia offering, the second link is actually 2.0.

Specs in the OP for 2.5

Tesla bought "Industry Standard GPU & CPU IP". Now that has me really curious.

Other thing is that they clearly put this design in the hands of safety engineers. Dual, independent SoCs, redundant power supplies and the ability to operate with multiple camera losses.

Looking at the details closer, Tesla more or less licensed AMD's Skybridge as the backbone for this design. Skybridge was to be a hybrid ARM/x86 design. This is an ARM/GCN hybrid design. I joke about Lisa Su's model being "Semi-custom all the things!", but that's really what it looks like. Plus, we know this was a Jim Keller design as well, so it looks like he got to do that ARM project after all.

It also makes sense from a design/staff perspective. The Neural Network Accelerator is where they'd need to put all of their R&D. AMD will sell them pretty much everything else about a SoC and save them several years of development, plus Keller probably wanted to work on it and could lead them through the integration and testing phase. One it was design locked, that's probably when Jim went to Intel.

If you aren't scared by some technical talk, this really is a good watch to understand what is going on with this technology. It's going to be common, so even jumping to the Software presentation is worth doing.

@S w a t s o n please correct, it doesn't have a TDP of 100W, but a power consumption of 72W

I imagine that is an actual quote/spec from the presentation and TDP is a specification for coolers not actual power usage. It's likely over rated because it's for a vehicle that could be operated in much higher ambient temperatures than most typically would, Australia & UAE for example. TDP = Thermal Design Power.

CPUs and GPUs are typically under rated because they can boost and often aren't fully utilized, there isn't any issue dropping a slight amount of performance. For a car however the part cannot fail due to heat, that would be bad, and cannot drop below minimum performance to operate correctly. Two different design approaches are required.
