What to do wit it R410

I put this here because its a sever/os question So I bought another server this one I want to play with the other 2 are stable unRAID servers what is a good project to run on this I did open media vault but its a NAS and well already have 2 of those, tried proxmox but don't really like it the VM performance sucked but I'm sure with a lot of tweaking it may be better any other options that you guys might be playing with just looking for ideas

Mod: if needed please move accordingly

Why did proxmox preform bad? It preforms fine, and uses kvm just like unraid. Im guessing it was just a config error. Id try playing with the more advanced features.

Have yo uused hyperv? esxi?

Yea I'm not sure why it was so bad I mean latency for horrible I also seem to have some type of issue with my network  or my 2 dell servers are on a managed switch I think it has to do with me trying to install os's on a usb as it will not pass through the nic but it clearly is working as I can ping them fine had the problem with installing open media vault and with ubuntu server I could not have DHCP or Manually giving them a IP address I may try to install proxmox directly to my ssd and see if I can get something going that way networking is my weak point but I continue to read up and try different things will see if I get something going right I'll shoot back and post

it should work fine installed on a usb, other than the slow disk speed.

Why are you passing through a nic, use a virtual nic(use virtio) or use sr-iov if you want the lower overhead.

I think the usb was the problem it was a usb 3 and the servers are usb 2 not sure if that played a role but I just finished installing open media vault on my internal ssd and it went without a hitch, as for the passthrough I'm probably not explaining it right as I was using virtio and machine 1440fx-3.0 what I meant was it was not passing through the nic there was something stopping the os from loading and seeing my network during installation

what were you using the usb for? Normally you don't use usb on a server for much.

seems like a network config, idk what you did, but its a virtual switch by default

I was trying to install the os on the usb then put it into the internal usb port and run the os from there the R410 only has 4 drives plus I put a CD conversion tray in where I put an ssd was hoping to use the ssd as cache and the drives for data I have my R710 running unRAID with this exact setup with no problems but unRAID actually is setup to do just this

Well that's encouraging I'll keep at it and see where it takes me still lots to learn with this networking stuff but that's why I bought the R410
