2080Ti what to look for and what to avoid

Hello peoples,

 

I am a lowly 1080p gamer but also a heavy Vive VR gamer currently on a 980Ti. Looking forward to the newer headsets but enjoying my vive immensely for sitting, standing and roomscale immersive experiences and games. Time for me to think of a GPU upgrade and just wondering given the price I have to shell out on what people might recommend for an air cooled version. prices range from 1k to several hundred above that, is the several hundred more or less just brand pricing mark ups?

What are your system specs?

 

Unless you are running a 9900K or 9700K look at the 2080 instead for 1080P.

 

And then depending on your CPU it might bottleneck a 2080 at 1080P.

My interest is more in the VR element, and the improvements and better future proofing over the 980Ti. I am a power game/sim user I guess so ignore the 1080p thing, its not an average use case for me.

Doesn't matter, anything other than a 9900K or 9700K will bottleneck the shit out of a 2080Ti at 1080P period no matter what.

a 9600k, 8700k, 8700 and 8600k would be sufficient too

Yeah, it varies depending on the game and settings.

 

Need to max out the settings at 1080P though.

 

What I had to do with mine, my 1440P monitor is in for repair so I am running at 1080P currently.

Seriously its a rippoff. Were you a person that was ok with buying a Titan in the past, if not then you shouldn't be ok buying a 2080ti either.

 

Grab urself a 2080 or a 1080ti if u want top of the line performance for realistic prices.

The 2080Ti is a toasty card, overbuilt coolers are required.

 

Dont listen to the other guys saying that the 2080Ti is a ripoff, what they fail to understand is that with RTX every product segment moved up one level (1070=2060). This means the RTX2080Ti is bloody expensive. Why? Because nVidia treats it as a Titan class card. Does it perform like one? Yes.

Yeah, I have both a 1080Ti and 2080Ti, both FTW3's and the 2080Ti destroys the 1080Ti.

1080p is not for the 2080ti. The only thing that makes any sense for you is a card that is two steps above the 980ti, but isn't total overkill and isn't crazy expensive.

 

That leads you to 3 options. A used 1080ti, a 2080 or a Radeon VII. If you want the cheapest option, get the used 1080ti. If you want Ray Tracing + DLSS and enhanced NVENC encoder, get the 2080. If you want your gpu to last an eternity without any stutters and want the best performance in non-gaming tasks, get the Radeon VII. Take your pick. Just don't waste your money on the 2080ti.

 

But if you're set on the 2080ti, I'd just get this okay evga model and be done with it. Wasting hundreds on a better cooler just isn't worth it.

What ur not understanding .. or rather not accepting .. is that through out the many generations prior, as each new generation came out the products did indeed move up 1 level, but the prices stayed very much within margin.

The 2080ti was released priced like a Titan, people even defended it saying it is a Titan hence the price ..just named a 2080ti instead .. then ofc Nvida released the actual RTX Titan ..so ..yea.

There is a lot more to it than just the cooler, the clocks on the Black are MUCH LOWER than the higher end cards especially when compared to the FTW3 Ultra.

And the RTX titan performs like what? A Quadro, the next step up in nVidias product line.

 

nVidia moved their pricing segmentation up. If you want a 1080Ti killer, buy a 2080.

 

This guy wants a 2080Ti, so let him get a 2080Ti.

 

Also, what all of you missed was OP clearly said to ignore his statement of 1080p. It is not his intention.

Well in the end the 2080Ti is a monster, especially the high end models and that is what really matters.

To actually answer your question of price segmentation within the 2080Ti card, it does matter. As I said before, there are really 4 cards you want to look at if you want the best 2080TI experience. Those are the MSi Lightning Z, EVGA KiNGPiN, Asus ROG Strix, or Galax Hall of Fame edition cards. These are probably the 4 most expensive, but by far and beyond the best.

Gonna try and simplify this, you can either get the cheapest 2080ti black when it's in stock and call it a day (unless fan noise is an issue then go for a higher end model)

 

For higher end model, it's mostly marketing and minmaxing, 5% more performance for 300-500 dollars more, if you choose to go this route, get the higher binned cards, FE and swap out the cooler, or other high end models, but not all of them guarantees great clockspeeds.

I think the 2080, radeon VII, and 1080ti are the sweet spot for super high end 1080p and midrange 1440p.  Specifically the 1080ti since you can likely get the best price on it as it will likely be used.

 

The 2080ti, as awesome as its power is, remains a terrible deal overall.  The price jump to the flagship card from 10-20 series was an extreme turn off.  I absolutely love being able to get over 100 FPS in even tough AAA titles at 1440p (and getting 165 fps on medium titles) and you won't be able to get that with any other card, as they aren't powerful enough.  But if you dont have a high refresh 1440p or any 4k monitor, you certainly don't need one.  At 1080p the frames it can push out will outpace any CPU but the very high end.

 

I would go a tier down (RVII/2080/1080ti) and you will be all set (and save tons!)
