CPU over heating

Hey fellow tec people!!!!

My wife's computer is having cpu overheating problems. She has an i7 4790k and when I run Prime95 at stock speeds it will hit 100C, she has an AIO (H100i v2). Before I could overclock her cpu to 4.5 to 4.7 no problem staying in the high 70s. Once I gave her the computer I turned off the overclock and put it to stock 4.0 with the standard turbo to 4.4. I have replied the thermal paste and still have the same issue, it idles in the low to mid 30s. I can hear the pump running and I have the radiator fans running at full speed (it is in push/pull configuration). Can someone help me!!

I am really not sure what to tell ya, if the pump is running and fans are running it should be fine.

 

Double check the mounting? Seems like that isn't the issue as its running 30c idle, but could be bad contact. Re-apply the thermal paste again? Check voltages? Maybe for some reason its pushing some insane offset voltage and causing crazy temps? This is really all I can think of.

I am not sure if that is normal or not either, but I know that isn't "high". 1.3v should be well within what a h100i can cool. It does seem to be a bit high tho from what I remember my 4770k needing... But like I said, that wouldn't cause 100c.

 

I would double check the pump is actually running, and its mounted correctly with all 4 fasteners good and tight.

The mounting is good and tight. What is the best way to test if the pump is running?

Normally the CPU will underclock and undervolt when not being used, so 1.29 is crazy high for idle. Granted, if you have it set in the BIOS to never underclock or undervolt then it makes sense, but I would stress it with prime95 and see what the volts go to under load. And, I would probably say just reset the BIOS and enable XPM... May help, may not.

No real way to test beyond trying to see if you can feel it running, or hear it. But, if you can idle at 30c for a while, the pump has to be running, if it wasn't the water in the block would just get super heated, so, likely this isn't the issue anyways I suppose.

I have XMP enabled and everything else is default besides the fans set to 100%

I am not sure I believe that, or, well, I am not sure its working correctly.

 

It should be under clocking and under volting at idle.... Obviously the PC I am on right now isn't the same as you, I am on my 8700k @ 5 GHZ PC (not even in my sig), but right now at idle its running anywhere from .808-1.256 ish volts and it fluctuates a lot according to CPU Z and HW Info.

 

Something just doesn't sound quite right is all. I would double check BIOS, and maybe just clear CMOS as I have seen that help things for me before.

@LIGISTX After clearing my CMOS and only enabling XMP and changing my fans to 100% I ran Heaven and Prime95 for 30 mins at the same time.

GPU- got up to 79C

CPU- the hottest core was 94 and the lowest was 88C during the testing the temp ranged wildly from 69C to 82C and only spiked to the 90s a couple of times.

@LIGISTX That is a better result than she has been getting so the reset definitely helped but I am not sure if that is a comfortable temperature range considering all she does is game and stream.

Thats still a pretty hot CPU for being stock, but... that is likely "ok". Depending on which version of Prime95, it could be slamming it with to much load, I would maybe try and download AIDA64 and run that stress test instead as it has shown to be more "normal".

Go to Tools, and use system stability test. And then just press start, defaults are fine.

Since your just worried about CPU temps, no reason to run heaven. 5-10 mins should be plenty.... What temps is it showing right now after a few minutes?

it is currently wildly and I mean wildly moving from as low as 58C to the hottest core at 78C

@LIGISTX  Aida64 statistics report the averages to be from 61.3 to 69.0 with a high of 78. I am still running the stress test.

I don't understand how its moving around so much... something seems to be wrong. But, at least its cooler i suppose. Seems weird, it shouldn't fluctuate that much.

Were you running the Small FFTs test in Prime95? That is a highly unrealistic workload that's like a power virus. That usually spikes any of my stuff straight to 100C.

 

My personal preference is use CPU-Z's built in benchmark/stress test while using HWMonitor to monitor temps. It provides a much more realistic load. There's a beta benchmark in the latest version (1.88) that includes AVX workloads that'll hammer a CPU pretty hard but still not as hard as Prime95's Small FFTs test.

 

That said, my HTPC uses a 4790K on an ASUS Z97-A/USB3.1 motherboard with a Noctua NH-D9L cooler with two NF-A9 fans. It's in a SilverStone Grandia GD-09 case with two Corsair ML120s for intake, and two Noctua NF-A8s for exhaust. I have an extremely conservative fan profile tuned for silence. I was hitting about 75 after a few minutes on the regular test and about 85 on the beta AVX test. And this is with an ambient room temp of 72.7F/22.6C. If your system can't beat that, your cooler is shot. If is beating or at least closely matching that, the Prime95 test you were running was the problem.

@B16CXHatch after about 5 mins now, its hottest core is 68C. Anywhere from 65 to 68 on cores 1-3 and 4 for some reason is 57C to 58C.

For an air cooler, I would say just a couple of minutes but with that liquid cooler I'd say it needs to run just a little longer. Maybe 5-10 minutes.
