Talks of Disney to buy Game Giant Nexon

For people who don't know who Nexon is, they are the owners of MapleStory, Mabinogi/heroes(Vindictus in the US/EU), etc.

Yeah, he said it. I'm shocked by it too by this one quote. I guess he is tired of milking people, mostly children.

The anticipated price for the stake to go on sale is 15 trillion won ($13.2 billion), with premiums for business management rights on top of the Nexon Japan share price, which closed up slightly at 1,681 yen ($15) Tuesday, but slid to 1,558 yen as of 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Korean daily JoongAng Ilbo quoted the international banking industry as saying that NXC Chairman Kim Jung-ju personally approached a high-ranking Disney representative to discuss acquisition matters. -The Korean Herald

But Disney reportedly has a special place in Kim’s heart.

Some people hate Nexon to death,” Kim Jung-ju was quoted as saying in an anecdote in Nexon’s foundation story, “Play,” published in 2015. He was referring to the common practice of effectively requiring players to make in-game purchases.

Nexon was founded in Seoul in 1994. It posted its own record of 2.5 trillion won revenue in 2018. Nexon Japan had roughly 2.5 trillion won in cash reserves as of end-2018. Nexon’s new high-end mobile game “Traha” has garnered over 4.1 million advance sign-ups in Korea alone, hinting at another revenue boost for the company. 

Disney was unable to comment at the time of writing. Nexon and NXC also could not offer comments.

Summary

Nexon Founder Kim wants to sell his company shares for 13 billion. Rejected other offers from other companies, since he is looking for a company who will not heavily push monetization on children. This is were Disney comes into the picture since it has a special place on Kim and knows that the Walt Disney company will not push such practices on children.

I'm a little shocked that Disney wants to get back into the gaming industry again.

That being said they're probably doing it for the mobile side of things rather than doing shit like Split/Second or Pure again.

I gotta say I thought MapleStory was just a FaceBook game you play in your browser. 

 

Why buy it, when I’m sure Disney has other game companies?

Is Nexon still relevant? I really wonder how many people are still playing their games. There sure wasn't many people when I tried Maplestory 2 on released(and its down to about 1k concurrent players on steam now)

While Maplestory 1 was essentially dead except for their "reboot" server (where they've basically removed a lot of the slow grind and terrible anti-consumer bullshit, funny huh...) when I played it for the last time last year.

(I know they have other games, they just aren't as well known)
