Recommended Posts

So recently linus posted on the ltt account that there was only 21tb of space left in petabyte project. What do u reckon will happen? Another Petabyte? He sure has the space for it in his rack. Will @LinusTech reveal his new secrets to us?

we are long overdue for a server update, we are probably are going to get one in the coming months...

(yes months, it's going to be the Late 2015/Early 2016 Vlog all over again....)

I once wrote a fan fiction between Luke and Dennis for Luke on one of his streams, he never read it, I SPENT 15MIN ON THAT!!!! (read it here: test1.docx )

and i am also the man who asked Linus to set his profile pic on twitter to something awesome: https://twitter.com/samiscool51/status/758526342396715009

(i didn't expect him to reply, nor for it to turn into official merchandise and actually affect LTT's video style!!!! i am god!!!)

Anyone reading this is a very nosy wanker....

do they really need to store every raw video they have ever filmed? At Weta studios they employ a team of people to manage their archives of digital artwork. LTT isn't making lord of the rings!

Why would they not? It doesn't hurt to have the raw files available and LTT can make videos about Petabyte Project etc.

At a certain point I wouldn't bother with keeping raw files, it's not like they would re-make a video after say 2 years or something is it?

I mean yes, I would keep UNUSED footage, but for footage that'd already been used I would just keep a compressed version for "just in case" the footage was wiped from youtube or something.

They've said that they reuse old footage in new videos sometimes.  If you want to do that without data loss (degradation in video), you have to keep the original video files.

Not sure why they haven't used ZFS + gluster yet, or something of the like.

If I remember right they only use one of the two servers right now that make up Petabyte project and they have one powered off or something.

@Lurick Linus mentioned in a previous video that the second 45drives server was powered of for a while to save on power on hours on the drives themselves but has since turned both servers on as is visible is his 10gig internet video.
