Don’t remove the Samsung Galaxy Phone “screen protector”—Four reports report dead phones after removing

Also reported by CNBC and The Verge reporters, but I couldn’t find the tweets. 

 

Essentially, the Galaxy Fold comes with a film on the screen that a bunch of reports thought was only protective, so they removed it. All of the phone screens subsequently died from some unknown reason. 

 

Hopefully samsung will make it clear that the protective film is NOT to be removed, because otherwise I can imagine many consumers will run into this exact issue. 

 

Samsung why on earth would you make something so crucial to the device’s operation so... removable?

Huh, who would have thought a folding screen was fragile.. Beats me!

 

IMO they should have done a Nintendo DS style folding phone - would have been more practical.

Seems that Dieter fron Verge and Kovach from CNBC didn't remove the covers, still broke. You can see it on MKBHD tweet in replies.

As someone who doesn't closely follow the phone market (mainly due to lack of interest/money), could someone explain the point of a folding phone? As it seems completely pointless to me.

Uh......... I think a bigger screen because apparently it's better to have one clunkly device that breaks easily instead of a standard phone and then a tablet if you really need a bigger screen on a mobile OS.

I can't ever see myself needing a huge phone like that. Occasionally I wish my phone had a bigger screen, but non of those times would I actually bother to unfold it if I could, seems like a waste of time. Also is it $2000? That's a bloody lot, just buy a top of the line flagship phone and then a surface go (or probably pro for that price tbh).

This is the most sterotypically Samsung product introduction I've seen in a while.

 

"This is revolutionary!  It's the future of phones!  Take that, Apple."

 

Mere hours after reviewers get it... yeah, it's snapping like a twig, and not just when people pull the screen protector.  Samsung had just better hope that this is a bad batch and not indicative of what users will normally get, because if this is typical, it's a disaster.

I'm guessing the thing they're pealing off is the OLED seal, because OLEDs need to be sealed off to prevent water damage.

 

So I guess the question is why wasn't this seal under the edges or whatnot where it can't be easily removed?
