Intel readies the 9th generation low-power CPUs - a 35W i9?

According to some sources, we might be seeing new low-power desktop chips from Intel in May, and all the SKUs are here, including some interesting ones..

 

 

So, there will be a total of 10 new SKUs, 7 from the Core family and 3 from the Pentium family, and they are as follow:

So, the lineup does look interesting. The most apparent difference from the 65/90W SKUs is obviously the base cloks, which drop as low as 1.8GHz. Although these are not really meant for your typical gaming desktop PC, it should be found in HTPCs, all-in-ones, or even desktop replacement laptops. 35 watts of Intel TDP means jack, still coffee lake so it's still not super duper efficient. At least it'll likely be cooled by a stock heat sink. Really looking forward to 8 cores on an H310 board, poor man's HEDT.

Low end 8c of any processor means a great NAS, or maybe even a home server running VM's.

They are probably no good for laptops unless the laptops have really good thermal solutions.  The base clock is rather low except on the lower core count CPU's. Which makes them low end desktop parts/utility parts rather than mobile solutions.

Hmmm.  Is it me or is Intel going backwards while AMD is going forward with their upcoming Zen 2 and Zen 2 ThreadRipper.  Intel wants a monopoly so they make these cheesy CPU's for people who have no money to buy something high end.

T series CPUs have been around for a lot of generations, going back to Ivy Bridge at least.  I have a 3220T in my NAS because it's not a CPU intensive deal and I'd rather have lower power.

Sorry, I guess it was a rant post on how Intel has been stuck on 18 core desktops and they wont budge at all.  Why can't they do what AMD did and will do with Zen 2 and have 64 threads.  To top it off the Intel is 500 dollars more expensive. It's common sense why pay 500 dollars extra for a 18 core when you can get a 32core for 500 less.  Now I know TR had bad single core performance, but Im hoping they fixed this with the new upcoming Zen 2 TR I'm willing to pay 1700 dollars,  But no way Im paying 2200 dollars and getting only 18 cores when 32 cores is right in your face with AMD and 500 bucks less.  sighs

They obviously won't be as good as the high-powered ones.

The i9 will be like an i7, and so forth.

I mean, this isn't their flagship line of CPUs, given the low TDP and the assumed integrated graphics they could be used for a lot of more menial tasks. Like @mr moose pointed out, a custom NAS machine or running VMs of a server or just a small form factor Micro or Mini-ATX build. With adequate cooling these chips could run very cool and very quiet. Although, this according to 'sources' so we shoudln't speculate too much.

Might be the chips that scale so-so thermally below the mid-3 GHz range, but don't scale well with higher voltages (or run at all) past low 4~ GHz range.

They aren't doing what AMD have done because they don't need to,   HEDT is a very small portion of Intel's sales.    At the end of the day if we look at performance per dollar in the domestic market, everything is priced about the same, a few expensive outliers and a few good deals, but mostly the more you pay the better your performance.   Majority (and I mean a significant majority) of domestic consumers don't need more than 4 cores, the  more cores push is more about marketing and development than it is about sales and system requirements.

 

If you want to look at the commercial side of things then there is another entire line of thinking and conditions that have to considered.   I.E there is more to it than simply performance per dollar.

Your very bright and smart person.  Thank you for the detailed message.  I had a Athlon XP once, after that I have been intel with P5k core 2 quad and my current rig.

Thank you,  I am still running 4C 4T i5 from 2011.  I am finding it very difficult to justify an upgrade right now, I really want a Ryzen system (just because), but money does not fall from the sky where I live.

T probably doesn't mean anything, just a designation to set it apart from chips that can clock higher.
