From 6500 to 6700 or 8700

Hi,

 

I'm currently using a system that houses a i5 6500 with 32 GB RAM. I play some AAA games, but not that often. I do some heavy graphical work which require me to have multiple Adobe applications open simultaneously as well as some 3D modeling and motion graphics. So far I've had no issues, but often see some super-short coffee breaks from my PC (they occur randomly when I'm using Photoshop or After Effects). They're not that big of a deal, but simply annoying because my OS drive is an NVMe SSD and I don't expect these short stares.

 

I'm planning to upgrade my processor and am given a choice.

 

1. i7 6700

2. i7 8700 + Asus TUF H370 (because I'm on a 6th gen board)

 

My question is do cores matter or do they make a significant impact? Some people said I'm better off with the 6700 because it's cheaper and does the work. They also said, I didn't need more cores for the type of work I do. Another group of people suggested I upgraded to the 8700 as more applications and games are heading towards utilization of multiple cores in order to deliver better results.

 

Need some experts' advice and please do mention the reason behind your suggestion.

The i7 8700 is significantly better than an i7 6700.

 

You get 2 cores / 4 threads extra.

More Cache.

Newer Lithography/Architecture so higher IPC (14nm vs 14nm++)

Higher All cores Turbo Boost Frequency: 3.6ghz vs 4.3ghz

Better iGPU for QuickSync Hardware Acceleration in Adobe.

 

the i7 8700 is a clear winner if you're going to spend money altogether, I strongly advise against a Asus TUF though, it's just overpriced even a B360M D3H from Gigabyte would suffice.

As of now, used prices on a 6700 just aren't worth it. When you can get an 8th gen or 9th gen i5 that has the same or better performance in both single and multithreaded, and for cheaper, the 6700 just doesn't make sense at this time, unless you nab a pretty great deal around $120. 

 

The i5 9400f that's out right now is still reasonably close to its launch MSRP, would not make a bad upgrade.

 

Of course, there's always good old Ryzen

I have an i7 6700. It's old now, there's no point in getting one. If you have the choice between an i7 8700 and i7 6700, the obvious choice is the i7 8700.

 

Also, wait for Zen 2 chips to hit the market before getting a CPU. Because those might be a bit faster than what Intel currently has to offer.

It would because you lose the iGPU and believe me hardware acceleration through Quick Sync is what made an i7 8700K match a TR 1950X in rendering on Adobe... it's a massive difference and a must have rendering the i5 9400F useless if you're going for a more serious work on Adobe software.

Neither.

Hold on until Ryzen 3000 series is released at the end of next month and look at that when its released instead.

 

 

That might be the better choice, we will know more in around 6 Weeks.

I've seen Ryzen (1700x and 2700x) performance with Adobe apps, not too pleasing in my humble opinion. I'm open to learning more about it.

the non-x ryzen are great overclockers, cheaper too.

of coz they cant beat intel top chips but they are almost half of it price

I guess 3rd gen Ryzen will be an improvement compared to 1xxx and 2xxx CPU-s, but, I doubt it will offer better single core-single thread performance to current Intel offerings.

 

It's just my guess though... For the Original question: 8700 without doubt.
