Should have used the Radeon 7 instead of the RX 590.

Apart from being the fastest AMD GPU it would also have been the only non-reference Radeon 7 making it more special.

AMD learned nothing with Intel? the same product with a different name and 'LIMITED EDITION" printed on the box and sell it for 80$ more for free profit... I'm disappointed AMD...

Free profit is free profit - if people are willing to pay, the business will happily price accordingly ?‍♂️.

AMD's Canadian HQ (Formerly global HQ of ATI) is holding a 50th anniversary event on the 3rd, I might go and see what this shit is

The 2019 AMD party continues in just over 2 weeks with some beautiful looking components. If they bring out a gold Radeon VII, I'm going to be tempted to sell my current R7 which I haven't installed yet and get that one. Please AMD, gold R7 please! Can't wait for AMD to scare Intel to death at Computex and then blow the doors off them in June/July. And then proceeds to punish Nvidia at the midrange (If the rumors are to be believed) with Navi. This is the year where Intel and Nvidia start to get their acts together and it's all thanks to AMD. Both Turing and Skylake 14nm+++++++ are about to be exposed.

I have the X470 Gaming 7 WiFi, and this is literally the exact same board but with a small "50" silk screened by the SATA ports.  I mean, they have the 3D printed RGB cover piece, they could have at least printed a new one promoting the 50th anniversary.  Unless it was merely a render created by TH (in which case, we don't know what the board will look like), then that is just laziness on Gigabyte's part.

People actually ditched the i7 8700K to get an i7 8086K

Dunno how many people did. I went straight to 8086k myself, and in reviewing the OC data at the time, it seemed on average they OC about 100 MHz more than the 8700k in like for like conditions.

If AMD similarly binned for a better 2700X it might be interesting... although it would be negated too soon by Zen 2.

Just like the 8086K, these things don't really need to be highly binned or exceptional performers for what they are.  You are buying an icon more than a product. If AMD has some nostalgic value to you like the original 8086 does for some of us, then regardless of the actual performance you are buying a commemorative wall poster/t-shirt in celebration of the thing.  It's no different than spending the extra $30 on a merch t-shirt because you saw the band live.

For only the small, small premium of $50 USD, you get:

  • a different laser-engraved image on the IHS
  • a (questionably) fancier box (that the favorite local shipping service would love to accidentally destroy)
  • an extra 0 MHz boost and base clock.

Kudos to AMD for capitalizing on anniversary emotions; they didn't even need to bin their chips an extra 300 MHz like Intel ?.

I paid $50 for a $5 T shirt simply because it had the dates of the def leppard concert I attended on the back.

lol.. my box is all scuffed and essentialy ruined (thank you fed-ex for never letting me down)

I am waiting to see what the t-shirt is going to be, link they provide just goes to a page 404. and when enetering the code through the usual amdrewards.com code redemtion it just says code not valid. I'm assuming it'll go up on the 29th

i mean the special engraving is alright. I'm not gonna lie I wasn't expecting much to begin with, was just looking at upgrading my Ryzen 5 1600 and figured it was worth a $50 gamble to see what i got. I'm waiting on new thermal paste to show up, then i'll stick it in ans ride it for all it's got. maybe it'll over clock better? (though i doubt it)

No special edition case badge? 0/10.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

For an extra $50 it's pretty underwhelming IMO, then again as mentioned you're buying the CPU because it's a special edition product.

I think the Intel 8086K wasn't worth the price premium either unless you wanted the extra binning, although at least you got a special sticker, and a fancy box.

Well, that's underwhelming.  It looks to me like they took the existing processors, and just had them laser etched with the additional "50" graphic and signature.

That's exactly what they did, the fact it says AMD 2017 at the bottom left means it's based on the old/current design.

Not even a fancy ryzen sticker...

Wow. So they aren't even going to give their 50th anniversary the press treatment (Like in February when reviewers got given that glass radeon VII stand thingy for example). You'd expect them to do something. They could have done a gold 50th anniversary Teddy Bear with a 'AMD 50' t-shirt and a 'AMD 50 hat'. Anything is better than this waste of $50.

The copyright date doesn't prove it's an older chip.  Copyrights don't always get updated every year (which is why I didn't state it definitively).  It certainly lends credence to my theory, though.
