I actually was thinking about this some time ago and I think it depends on what you're doing and how you represent one (1). You could do that with an index finger or your thumb.. My theory says this dictates your three (3) preference too.

The first one is clearly the right way. You keep the thumb in until 5, hard to do a 4 properly with the thumb up.

I represent 1 with my index finger and 2 with my index and middle finger, so why wouldn't three be index, middle and ring?

Using three fingers has worked quite well for me for almost seventy years. It's easier than two fingers and a thumb. The same is true for 1,2, and 4, especially when counting up from one.

Well personally if I'm representing the whole hand as 5 and counting down I go:

• Take thumb out first
• take pinky out
• take ring finger out
• take middle finger out
• take index finger out.

I read that backwards as you count one with your thumb, two with your thumb and pinky, etc

The reason for this is mostly because I can then hold the other fingers with my thumb, and it ends with a fist.

Always three fingers.  Sometimes it's Index, Middle, Ring and sometimes it's Middle, Ring, Pinky.

Well shit

 

I just realized sometimes when I'm using my fingers to physically count up (for example if I'm making bullet points while using hand cues for visual assistance) I might use my thumb as one (1) which means I end up with two fingers and a thumb by the time i get to three (3).
