PC Upgrades advice

Guest

Hi, I'm looking to upgrade my PC soon (Case, fan, CPU, and MOBO). I'm wandering if I should wait for intel's new CPU or just go for their current ones. I'm asking because upgrading my CPU means I'll need to upgrade my motherboard

What’s your current build? What is your computer primarily used for?

-6700k with Noctua NH-U14s

I primarily game, entertainment, program. On most of my games, it works fine. But on the intensive ones (Assassin's creed, witcher, etc) it can take it's toll. I know some of those games, Assassin's creed, are known to be CPU intensive though. Right now, I'm going to upgrade the case and cpu fan. But just wandering if I should upgrade the CPU along with them, or just wait.

Yeah, and I was considering it. But intel does seem to be the better option for 1080p gaming. Or am I wrong?

That will depend on performance of 3rd gen ryzen. Watch for benchmarks to see if it’s better than Intel or at least close enough not to matter. 2nd gen Ryzen falls behind Intels offerings, you are correct.

AMD has been making leaps and bounds in recent years. While they are yet still behind Intel I think we may see it soon when AMD really gives them a run for their money.

Without a doubt, wait for Zen 2/Ryzen 3.

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

Yeah. I'm keeping my eye on both TBH. So I guess waiting is the better option. I can upgrade the other stuff without the CPU and MOBO. But, upgrading the CPU requires I upgrade the MOBO.

Thanks

That 6700k should be more than good enough for current games. But if you have to overpower crappy PC-Ports like Assassins Creed Oranges or something there's no getting around a CPU with the fastest single threaded performance (IPC) possible and this will most likely mean Intel even with Zen 2 on the horizon cause even with the new architecture I doubt that AMD will match Intels IPC cause AMD usually focusses on superior multithreaded performance at the cost of single threaded performance which unfortunately isn't very beneficial for pure gaming performance. But be aware that overpowering shitty PC-Ports can be a fools errant cause these games usually don't scale very well with better hardware so you might end up being disappointed by the lackluster performance gains you'd get - that's at least my experience.

Anyway, if you wanted to get the best gaming performance possible in terms of CPU right now I think an I7 9700K would be your best bet. But I'd argue that it's not really worth it unless money isn't an issue for you cause the price/performance is pretty bad on those. So, yeah, waiting for Intel to bring out new stuff OR a possible price drop of current Intel CPUs in the wake of ZEN 2 is the way to go imho. And until then you can overclock your 6700k if you haven't already - that's what the K is for after all and with your CPU cooler should be able to get some pretty decent overclocks.
