How long do you expect your rig to last?

maxtch

My current rigs are bought in years 2013 and 2015, making them 6 years old and 4 years old respectively. However they are still going strong to this day, after a few spot upgrades like NVMe SSD, newer graphics card et al. On top of that I still has my 2012 MacBook Pro 13-inch Core i5, 2011 MacBook Pro 13-inch Core i7 and even a 2004 Dell Latitude D620, all of which still kicking.

How old are your current rigs, and how long do you expect them to last?

I think most of the pc's on here are kind of in the "you replace both the head and the handle of an axe, is it still that original axe" range

I originally built mine back in 2017, then have upgraded the gpu and cooler, probably will upgrade to Zen 2 once it comes out

Mine was built in Summer 2017 and is nearing its second birthday; I may be upgrading to the Zen 2 CPU's, if performance is what I expect it to be. Otherwise I might get a new GPU someday; the prices are just not to my liking now.

As @Slottr mentions, I think most people would more likely be upgrading their PC's here in bits; rather than getting a new one straight up. At what point is it a new PC though..?

Because I might get a new motherboard and CPU; two pieces of a PC some people might consider to be 'the main parts'.

Certainly not as long as my mom's 2008 Macbook, still going to this day

I plan on using my current rig for another 4 years probably in its current state and then doing a full system upgrade.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Always hard to say.  My last rig was built in 2012 and lasted until 2018.  This rig will last until it can no longer run AAA titles at 1440p 144hz high/ultra graphics.  Then I'll upgrade to the next high refresh rate resolution.  I'm expecting to get at least 4 yrs out of this one.

Time will tell...

Of my current rig, the motherboard/cpu/ram/ssd/hdd are all from when I first built it back in 2012.

The case/power supply/gpu are all new this year.

Technically, the GPU is only new to me, though.

Edit: I plan to upgrade the mobo/cpu/ram when Zen 2 comes out. I will probably add a larger HDD for game/video storage, but the SSD is still running super strong.

I think its gonna last at least 8 more years

Year old 1600X build, don't need to upgrade for two years probably but will upgrade the CPU to Zen 2 when its out and if it's any good. GPU i have no idea, NVidia is way to pricey and AMD doesn't have a upgrade for me, Intel may just solve that. Current build is in my signature.

Im expecting my rig to last another five years or so, depends on what happens during uni. last rebuild was just a few months ago but the oldest component is from 2014

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Spoiler

Built my rig minus my motherboard which I replaced a month ago, in March of last year and was lucky enough to get a 1080ti brand new at MSRP, which oddly enough is the only thing I'll be upgrading anytime soon and by soon I mean more than likely two or three years, I'll see what Navi and the next Nvidia generations have in store before I decide when to upgrade it, but at this moment the only thing I see upgrading it with would be a 2080ti but they're pricing is wack, and my 1080ti is good for 1440p gaming for a little while to come.

Oof. I just got my first pc the other day with a ryzen 3 2200g and 8g of ram. The next day I overclocked it to 3.8ghz. I'm hoping to keep it for the next 5 or 6 years

I can't remember the year, it was built probably within months of the release of the GTX 9 series.

It started with an i5 4670k and a gtx 780.

I've since added a ssd drive, replaced my 780 with a 1080 and it still seems to be going very strong.

The only upgrade I'm considering is maybe looking for a used 4790k just to add some extra clock speed and hyperthreading.

I should be good for a while still.

The base unit is about 10 years old, RAM is about 3, graphics card I'm not sure as it's not actually mine but it's a GTX650. SSD new in Feb(ish) and a pair of unknown age 500GB pipelines in RAID 1.

It'll probably last until it can't be repaired, then I'll take the other one I have and put all the working parts into that.

I assembled my current rig (in signature) in September, although I'd bought the GPU 1.5 years earlier for a previous rig.

I built the system with the intention of being able to play the vast majority of games on 1080p 75fps in ultra or high settings for at least the next 3-4 years, at which point I intend to replace the CPU with whatever Ryzen 4---- model is the best for AM4 slot and maybe upgrade GPU.

My previous system (FX-8150 with 8GB DDR3) I used for more than 5 years, and it was still running everything pretty well up until I upgraded to Ryzen. In fact, I probably could've replaced the FX-8150 with a FX-8350 and gotten another couple of years of comfortable gaming out of it, so I figure the current Ryzen system is going to be good for a long, long time.

Ryzen 1600x @4GHz

Asus GTX 1070 8GB @1900MHz

16 GB HyperX DDR4 @3000MHz

Asus Prime X370 Pro

Samsung 860 EVO 500GB

Noctua NH-U14S

Seasonic M12II 620W

+ four different mechanical drives.

I had an FX-8350 from release until 8th gen Intel came out and loved it. A good solid 6 years of heavy use and it's still going strong in my buddies system.

My PC still runs a 2700K, the original PC was a 2500K, built in 2012. I upgraded to a 2700K in 2017 because I got a deal on a used one. Still works plenty fine for my needs, but I want to upgrade to a 8700K soon (really want to break 5.0 GHz) and tired of this third party USB 3.0 controller on my motherboard.

Hope it lasts 4-5 more years.

I'm still running a 3550 and 8G.  apart from the GPU (which is about the only upgrade necessity), it is still running fine 8 years later.

From previous threads and polls the average enthusiast seems to build a new PC every 5 years and upgrade the GPU every 2-3 years.
