House passes bill to save Net Neutrality, idiots on Reddit celebrate too early- McConnell to block it from Senate floor as he said before vote

You may have noticed a ton of posts about this on reddit already

The "Save the Internet" Bill passed the house 232 to 190, with one Republican voting in favor, so bipartisan support is technically not a lie, just a strong mischaracterization of the truth written by someone completely bankrupt of journalistic integrity. But not a lie, technically.

We did it Reddit!

The stupidity of this premature celebration is compounded by the fact that Turtle-American Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell already announced it won't even make it to the Senate floor yesterday before the vote had even happened in the house.

Quote

“Dead on arrival in the Senate,” McConnell told reporters about the fate of the House bill, which is expected to get a vote in that chamber this week.

So here we are, claiming victory in an effort that was just symbolic, passing legislation that won't even be brought up for debate or a vote.

What have I missed here?  how can a single politician prevent a bill from being heard/voted on in the senate if it has passed the reps?

I don't remember the exact reasoning on how it is done but I know Senate Majority leaders can do what he is doing. He can also call votes when critical people are absent from the senate. It's some weird washington politics powerplay stuff.

I believe he did something similar to the 'Green New Deal' because a significant amount of people who may have supported it were absent. So he called an immediate vote on it.

Senate Majority Leader. He makes the schedule for the senate, he steers the party vote, whips keep party in line, defecting can lead to punishment like loss of roles in committees. The majority leader of either party is who you want to pay off if you need something done or blocked.

Sounds like dictatorship stuff to me,  In Australia if you aren't there to vote you don't get a vote and no single person can reject a bill, once it has been tabled it must be heard and voted on.

I think the other issue was because it had already been voted on and defeated previously, it is much easier to reject once again. And even if the senate had voted on it. It likely would of been veto'ed by the President. It is extremely party line following stuff.

That's no reason to have the power to be able to prevent something from even being debated/voted.

I get party politics, it's actually essential in many systems, but when party politics actually dictate what bills get heard in the first place, that's not representation of the people.

Exactly. This is why senate has a 13% approval rating from US Citizens. Many people hate the partisan politics that has gone on in Washington for many decades now. The last few decades it's always been Dems vs Repubs, instead of bipartisan that actually benefits people. And the only time I believe everyone agreed on something was when we invaded the middle east after the 9/11 attacks.

In theory you can prevent time wasting stuff like republicans in the house repealing obamacare every week as a statement under Obama and stuff like SOPA which came through over and over after it failed, but bills are just rebranded before being shoved through again and again until they pass when people aren't paying attention and fighting/complaining.

So I just spent a minute digesting those posts,  being able to dictate what bills/laws even have a chance to be heard is a dictatorship.  That is the best fit descriptor for this.

So how much money did McConnell take from ISPs before deciding this?

None, he just had few meetings in restaurants with his re-election campaing supporters. What you are saying would be corruption, learn the difference. (/s)

More hilariously, Reddit just found out what happens with a divided government, which is generally very little. I'm glad they've learned a basic civics lesson.

I'd bet there's a lot of people that do believe that.

What I'm seeing, at least with my eyes, is that we can't get shit done because the House is focused on taking down Trump and the Senate is focused on trying to let Trump do his thing. No one seems to want to agree with each other and it's just gonna lead to a major halt in any sort of productivity, as if it already hasn't.

McConnell is the Senate majority leader. He manages the Senate and can control what bills come to the floor.

There's no common ground because there isn't any common ground. The Dems are under the complete control of Wall Street-Silicon Valley axis, which is what is causing a lot of the civil war among Dem factions. The GOP has its own massive factional war going on as well. After both of those get settled, then the real domestic political warfare gets started.

Civil War 2.0 isn't completely locked in, but we're rapidly approaching the point.
