Stackoverflow survey reveals growing interest in Linux

The results for the 2019 Stackoverflow developer survey are in and they show a significant growth of Linux users among developers, who put it in first place among the most loved development platforms once more.

According to the survey, a whopping 83.1% of developers rank Linux among their favourite platforms as a platform they'd like to continue working on.

The number of developers who use Linux as their primary operating system has also grown by a (relatively) staggering 10% compared to last year, closely rivaling MacOS for the second spot.

 

The survey also reveals that a lot of developers are fond of .NET Core, an open source Microsoft framework that includes many things that a few years ago were proprietary and exclusive to Windows; this change of heart on MS' part may have helped some developers to take the leap.

Linux always seems to be in the news for stuff like this. Honestly as a CS student (probably the demographic of most users on Stack overflow) the idea of linux is awesome... but learning it takes time and patience... a trait that most of my fellow students dont seem to have ;).

Honestly I'm not surprised. If it weren't for the games issue and laziness I'd switch to Mint for a good chunk of my work

I'd be more than willing if it garners more support.  If I can just load up my games or apps I want and go I'd be down but that's not always the case still.   Its definitely getting there though.

 

I like I'm sure a lot of people want it to work as seamless or "automatic" as windows.

Nice! Planning to trade my MacBook Pro for a legion and run either pop os or Manjaro as sole os

It comes with Docker, Raspberry Pi and kubernetes, which are related, so perfectly makes sense and that's probably the reason with IoT

In Manjaro I found it to be about as simple :) it's getting great, and fast :D

Mint... Yah it's my daily but I don't think I recommended it. It's got its issues. I'd look at Pop instead for an Ubuntu based OS

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

I would love to make the jump to Linux as a daily driver. The growing support for games and other programs makes it seem more like a reality for me soon. I think it just scares a lot of people. People crave familiarity and when you present someone with change they close their mind and refuse to learn.

Yes, but that doesn't completely explain the amount of developers using it as a primary operating system - it's not the IoT devices that make up that 25% of the user base.

I would argue it works a lot better for many things, it's just that if you try to use it exactly as if it were Windows you'll be frustrated.

I took the dive on my first year of university, mostly because I had no choice (I didn't have a laptop and I had to mod the hell out of a poor 2012 nexus 7 to make it run ubuntu) but also because I loved the idea - the second year I got a refurb thinkpad x220 (which I still use) and installed Arch. After 5 years of using Linux I'd never go back.

 

If you're on the fence about it, I suggest you just go for it as I did - don't bother with "beginner" distros, go straight for Arch and install it on a computer you use every day. Necessity will make you learn at a much faster rate (though maybe you should make sure you can install it in a VM before wiping your hard drive).

Uhm...What? Great news for who?

 

It's not like our choices and preferences makes we better than the others rather then just choosing for our needs and workloads as developers ones especially are not all the same

I was directly referring to that, personally I would feel frustrated to work with iot devices and Windows, especially when working with buildroot for example (so far it works only on Linux) or even partitioning for a Pi which requires ext4

Also ide's like atom and vscode work on Linux too, so people just moved for some reason

I have a lenovo legion y520 and all linux distros suck really bad with it, mainly due to dual gpu + igpu problems.

If you can get a ryzen 3000 + vega8/10 go for it, shintel igpu is a disaster.

Also the lack of software is kiling it, not even a decent videoplayer with debanding and motion interpolation sucks.

No pro software for CAD sucks...  snaps suck.

I should try fedora but i hate fucking gnome shit, in fact i hate all linux;s DE's fulll of issues.

Basically what Anthony was saying with gaming. Why pay for windows when you could use a free and highly customizable OS that is more efficient and safer

Doesn't surprise me in the slightest, every time I try to do my work on my windows pc instead of macbook some annoying windows-specific issue will pop up, wasting my time. Mostly due to the limitations of the filesystem.

 

I'm keeping windows as main os though mainly for the games and display drivers in general, I want the best performance as possible. Once gaming on Linux is as performant or better I'm definetly switching.

Not everything is that efficient though, pulseaudio and alsa are a truly nightmare by design and often cause issues, and driver incompatibilities

 

But it's definitely enjoyable when it just works

With this result, the Linux Community should work on a more user oriented development, in wich the USER is the important part. Something totally normal in Commercial Software (well, more or less).

But in Linux development it often looks like they don't necessarily care about the Users - if they did that trainwreck of Gnome3 with the OSX Style UI would never have happened (and Cinnamon + Mate would never heve existed either).

Gnome is not part of Linux, and you don't need to use it if you want to use Linux.

 

There are so many DEs specifically because people can't agree on what "users" want. Turns out developers are users too and they have their own preferences.
