unless youre doing optimizations it doesnt matter that much, thats what compiler is doing for you

I studied as a computer engineer and it was something I had to learn. If someone wants to argue that software developers should learn about hardware, well, I'd argue they have to learn the same things I had to take at school.

 

But otherwise, that's my point. If it's not important to software development, why should it matter? What hardware you choose tends to be an implementation detail over a design one.

I feel like the professors/students at least have a good grasp of what hardware/software is, and not say that your cpu has 4 cores.. when most modern CPU's have 6 - 8.

In our school the electronic technicians and IT technicians work closely together and aren't this oblivious to the "other side". Surely we know more about electronics than them and they know more about software than we do, but we aren't completely out of the loop.

It doesn't matter because you can't change the way it works, for FPGA it's completely other deal, you can make almost anything with it, the only limit is the FPGA chip you're using.

This is my experience too (as anecdotal as that may be).  I am a hardware guy, I studied electronics, Electrical engineering and Digital design (CPU development, I guess nowadays they teach you raspberry pi or Arduino instead?).  I absolutely admit to being at a lost end when it comes to software (not that I am completely ignorant, but lost enough not to be able to code or write a website anymore). 

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

I find this is across a lot of industries that have multiple layers, especially between digital and physical.

 

Working in both design and print production, I've seen designers make stuff that's not possible to do, or design stuff incorrectly without taking into account how the process of production works.

 

A lot of them have their noses in the air too, when a "tech" tells them it won't work and blames it on them for not being able to do it.

I'm 5 years deep into software engineering and only a couple of times has the hardware I was running mattered at all, and even then it was for very basic reasons that even the most hardware incompetent student could have figured out - e.g. I didn't have enough memory to compute a dataset.

 

Also - a basic understanding of electronics and electrical engineering can be useful to a CS/software engineering student but it's not essential to know all the details. Coming from someone who had to take multiple hardcore courses in those fields, you'll never need to know how a MOSFET works on a physical level to program a computer or even to design basic electronics. All of that stuff is conveniently abstracted by the parts' spec sheet and, more often than not, by premade digital components.

Yeah I agree that it doesn't have to be super granular on all levels. But a general understanding at least how the thing you are programming works. Especially relating to how a CPU works with threads and how it handles tasks.

I always find it funny that people on this forum seems to think that you are knowledgeable about hardware if you have memorized things you can read on the back of packaging for consumer electronics.

Like "yeah I know hardware, because I have memorized the frequency and model number of a bunch of AMD processors".

To a degree yes. You can have programs that run two or more threads in parallel, i.e., at the same time. Or you can have concurrency, where the threads have a slice of time to run on the CPU and the slice is short enough that multiple tasks appear to be happening at the same time.

 

As an example, a GUI app has to run with concurrency. If the app ran on a single thread and it had to process something heavy, it would no longer process any GUI related tasks. Because of this, the GUI (and thus the app) appears frozen. So the GUI is often on another thread so that the processor can switch to running the GUI every so often.

Because of Amdahl's Law. Scaling doesn't happen just because you have independent tasks. Those tasks will likely have roadblocks and such due to I/O access (anything that's not in a CPU core may as well be an I/O access as far as execution is concerned) or other things like branching.

 

Also for things like games, games are generally serial programs in that major categories of tasks have to be done in order. They may have smaller tasks within them that can be broken up and distributed throughout, but, for example, graphics rendering is always going to be the last thing to be done because the image is supposed to represent the current state of the game world. And even graphics rendering, which is often used as an example of a highly parallel application, is actually a serial algorithm. You cannot do certain steps before others in the graphics pipeline. But what makes it highly parallel is that its doing the same thing across millions of pixels.

I am studying computer architeture and as part of that, I am studying MIPS cpu microarchitecture. I think I am already learning way too much.... I seriously hate circuits.

You come off as quite childish in your comments, I’m sure your lecturers have a sufficient understanding of the relevant functional aspects of PC hardware, even if they don’t keep up to date on what the latest CPU generation is. Perhaps once you gain some more experience you’ll understand what is and isn’t relevant outside of the tech hobbyist sphere.

 

I’m a software engineer myself, knowing how many Ghz you can get a cpu to without liquid hydrogen cooling isn’t exactly going to be helping anybody write more efficient algorithms.

I'm a systems engineer. my scope includes but is not limited to:

- Hypervisor platforms (Predominantly VMware, but also Hyper-V & Azure)

- Physical Server support (HP, IBM, Dell & Cisco UCS)

- Windows Server (NT4.0 > Server 2016) 

- Linux Server (Predominantly RHEL, Fedora, Ubuntu)

- Windows Domain & Deployment (DNS/DHCP/DFS/GPO/SCCM/WSUS etc...)

- Citrix Environment (App Deployment, VDI/Hosted Desktop, general infrastructure)

- Exchange Server Management (Server 2007 > Server 2016 & Office365 Hybrid deployments)

- Proxy Management (IronPort, WebMarshal & Cloud services)

- Backup Management (Veeam, Netbackup, ARCserve, etc...)

 

I also do Cisco Networking (routers & switches), Firewalls (Checkpoint,Sophos,Fortinet), Storage (IBM & NetApp SAN, Synology & QNAP NAS)

 

 

The fact is, looking after hyper-converged infrastructure and TaaS, IaaS, DaaS etc..environments is entirely cumbersome enough as it is, let alone becoming decent at software development. I do use powershell & bash scripting in my work, and in my private life I do php, pawn and some c# scripting - but honestly when you get into the real nit and grit of either Software Development vs Platforms, you can only retain so much and be proficient at so much.

I was just more concerned someone is teaching false information because they didn't really know about hardware as they were a software engineer

That’s a fair point, perhaps what he was saying is just out of date I suppose. Certainly in the core 2 quad days you’d struggle to hit 5ghz with conventional cooling methods.

If a student takes everything their teacher says without trying to apply said things to see for themselves that what their teacher said more or less true, or at the very least look into them, then I'd argue the student is doing a poor job of learning.

 

Also depending on the degree of "wrongness" or whatever, I say... does it really matter? I mean, we'd like to think teachers are infallible, but they're human with a certain capacity of caring and retaining information, just like the rest of us. Computer scientists may not care about the latest and greatest hardware because that's not really in the purview of the discipline. They might care if their theory gets realized into hardware, but that's about it. That is, if someone came up with some new speculative execution method, they may only care that it gets implemented on some processor. They likely won't care which one it gets implemented on.

Knowing the latest and greatest hardware as software engineering is probably not that important as others already said here. But knowing some basics about parallelization, caching and similar basic "how hardware works" can be important, sometimes critical. Wrong loop order and other non cache friendly code can be very costly for the speed despite being very simple misstakes. There is a guide that is a good introduction to cahcing for programming. Most of this stuff has been around for a while so I doubt it would become outdated soon. But how knows, some of the techniques used(branch prediction) are one of the causes behind spectre and similair security holes so I wouldn't be suprised if it gets changed in the future.
