Is it worth it to go Ultrawide?

valvoa

Looking to upgrade my monitor situation but I just don't know if Ultrawide is the answer? I'm currently looking at these two, any huge difference?

Predator X34P

or the

Alienware AW3418DW

Both monitors seem very similar, I've currently have a dell IPS and it's been great and lasted forever. This will be for both work and gaming. For those who have switched to ultrawides as their primary monitor how has your experience been? Thanks!

In my opinion: No. Ultrawides offer a lower resolution than similarly priced 16:9 monitors and aren't very well supported. I also have a link in my signature to a post that explains why most movies won't look very good on an ultrawide monitor, even if they're in a 21:9 format.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

I personally use an ultrawide - the LG 29WK600 - and I find myself on the desktop for around 75% of my day, so that extra horizontal real estate is amazing for me and as a result, I cannot voluntarily go back to 16:9. Windows Snap with the split-screen windows is particularly roomy because of the 21:9 aspect ratio.

Watching videos shows black bars, but it's nothing that stands out after a while because after all, they're only black bars.

Where I struggle sometimes is game support, some games scale weird on my ultrawide such as Fallout 4.

My experience with UW has been amazing so far. Its an amazing experience playing games at 21:9. Using 16:9 monitor feels very claustrophobic now because I have that habit of moving my head to see corners of my monitor, yet on 16:9 you see all of it at the same time which makes me uncomfortable.

Ultrawide is neat, but it depends on what it's for. In games like TF2, I've enjoyed an ultrawide experience that's nice and immersive. In games like Dark Souls III and Nier: Automata I downloaded a mod that more or less just makes a great ultrawide experience with no stretching or ruined UI, but in newer titles like Sekiro the 21:9 support is hit or miss, and compatibility in more competitive titles like Overwatch is just turned off because some find it unfair to have more view (despite the fact that 144Hz helps me more than any extra monitor view, but that's a discussion for another day)

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Interesting to hear that Sekiro doesn't have 21:9 support. I don't play a ton of competitive games so I'm ok with that, I mainly play RPG's and Indie's with the occasional AAA. Work I'm thinking it would be quite helpful but I've used multiple 16:9 monitors for so long that I'm questioning 1 single 21:9. Do you use a 21:9 alongside of a 16:9? Thanks.

I do, I have an LG 21:9 next to an old Asus 1600x900 display. Windows scaling is ass but when you're only using 2 monitors it doesn't hurt so much.

No it's not? I just played Overwatch a moment ago and I had full 21:9 view. Unless what you mean is the 21:9 is perhaps zoomed in?

Those competitive games actually just crop your bottom and top, so using ultrawide is a big disadvantage.(the width of the filed of view is the same on any monitor) That is why most pro gamers use square monitors in those titles.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

It's zoomed so you actually see less and not more. It feels really cramped and 16:9 is way better

I love having an Ultrawide as it does what dual monitors do for productivity and adds a fantastic peripheral element for game play.

I'm an accountant, so have having a dual monitor setup to work from home is a requirement.  The 35" is great for having 2 docs or spreadsheets open or a combo of them and email, web access to the accounting software, etc.

Plus as said above... it adds a great feel to gaming for me personally.  I love the curve and how it feels so much of my vision.  Just adds a bit more immersion.

As for watching movies?  That's what a 70" TV is for :)

Get your face in front of one at a store and see how it feels your sight angles, you really have to be physically in front of one to make the decision IMO.

I thought so. I was looking over some of my Shadowplay video just now that I recorded of my Overwatch game and the FOV really did look zoomed in. I mean the fact that I didn't notice until just now even though I've played Overwatch on a 16:9 monitor shows how casual I am about ultrawides vs 16:9 aspect ratios.

I’ve had the AlienWare you mention for about a week now and I have to say, I miss my 144Hz of the PG279Q.

The 120Hz is nice but the drop was noticeable and I was looking to go to the new 1440p 240Hz anyway.

Plus, I find the UW aspect a little distracting too.

Im probably one of the few who prefer and will be going back to 16:9 at the end of the month.

Although it is a very nice, solid monitor with good quality visuals.

After surround gaming for almost 10 years, I would go ultra wide. Only way you should be gaming. Sucks losing out of frames as cards are far too weak unless somehow a $1200 card is in your budget. Which is the only reason I don’t have either.

This is my biggest concern. My other option would be a 27" 1440 as my main and another cheap panel to the left maybe set vertically.

I’m waiting for the Lenovo Legion Y27gq - that’s my ultimate monitor that I will keep for a few years.

1440p

240Hz

0.5ms Response Time

G-Sync

90-95% DCI-P3 Colour

Should release this month.

I paid £1,000 for the AlienWare ($1,300 USD) and this should also come in at £1,000.

I was waiting for the ASUS PG35VQ (1440p UltraWide with 200Hz) however that’s been delayed so many times, now rumours suggest September to October 2019.

Even though I have the money (around £2-2,500) - I no longer have the patience.

Plus, it can’t do 200Hz with full HDR.

So I will get the Lenevo, enjoy the 1440p and 240Hz and wait until DisplayPort 1.5 makes its way onto the market.

But this is at least 1-2 years way with products coming to the market.

My dream monitor would of course be:

1440p 240Hz HDR 1,000 (OLED/IPS)

4K 240Hz HDR 1,000 (in 2-3 years time)

and then the same for UltraWides.

That way, UltraWides are an equal choice to 16:9s but the 16:9s currently are superior with the higher refresh rate and better response times.

You make a lot of assertions in regard to specifications which are fact, but the real world application of them isn't that black and white.  240Hz?  Vs 120Hz?  0.5ms response?  Vs 1ms or even 4ms?

Spec sheets are neat but how do they handle on the track?  It's about the driver (user) who can't keep up rather than the equipment.

If it's what you want, rock it out.  I just don't think the differences are really impactful in usage.

Everyone’s different.

I can easily tell the difference between 120 and 240.

Its the fact that the monitor is also 1440p as I find 1080p not good enough.

And low response time is always better and provides a clearer image.

All in all, within the gaming use, it will definitely have a difference for me.

That's irrelevant to the experience question asked.  Assuming the OP is infact shitting money and has the power to push the monitor... how is it USING the thing?  That's what you need to help with.

But to your point... some of us have worked pretty damn hard and eaten enough from life to be able to shit a little money and splurge on a few goodies :)

I'll bore you with the "if you knew what I had to game on when I was your age" bullshit later ;)  Hint: It starts with a C and ends with a 64.

I'll bore you with the "if you knew what I had to game on when I was your age" bullshit later ;)

Well i work my fucking ass off too but i just said if you have so strong pc then yeah and if you have budget for some ultrawide monitor its worth it but if you don't have strong pc for ultrawide NO :) and in my opinion its not worth it at all

Have you used an Ultrawide?  How was your experience with it?    Did it work for you for productivity and gaming?

Btw, you don't have to work fucking hard or shit money to have an UW.  It's barely the price of a TV.  Don't make it out to be some huge ridiculous expense.
