This all seems very nice, and i believe that school is more than just learning, but i have a hard time justifying this if the money could've gone to more staff, or better teaching facilities. if it's privately funded then awesome!

Teachers have been fighting to get wage increases since time immemorial, and your school goes and blows 100's of thousands of dollars on something like this? School is a place to learn, not to play...

It’s being paid for by the students.  I would seriously love to see students pay for teachers wage increases, but the professors here are top tier and probably get paid enough anyhow.  Love those guys. The TA’s though need help.  I just don’t see students paying that way for something like that. Most likely it would be paid through tuition increases which have been fought over for years now by the students.

I would much rather have a couple more students be able to attend than pay for something like that also.  I highly doubt that the government has anything to do with this.  Do you know where this school is? This area questions more stuff like this than most others. I am sure 200 students already filed your reports. Just chill and enjoy broseph

Was not meant to be so harsh sounding there.   I was trying to respond to a couple different posts.  This is my first time on this board and really on any board.  So yea. My bad. I think I agree with you.

Is the computer lounge publicly funded if it requires payment for using them?

" Rates for UW students will be $3.50 an hour or $30 for 10hours; UW faculty and staff will be $4.50 an hour or $40 for 10 hours; and the general public can gain access at $6 an hour. "

Sounds more like a plan to finance it by the user fees.

This is okay to me. Government institutions can be flexible with funding too, mixing it.

I am terrible at this.  I do not really ever visit community boards and this is my first time here and for a while in general.  I tried to say something about being harsh but replied to the wrong person.  Idk if this is a mess but, yea I was trying to respond to someone else and include your post.  Wow that’s a lot of explaining.

This may just be the coolest school I have ever seen. I wish my school had this. The computer lab in the high school is an empty room with desks. We all use laptops.

That’s terrible.  This is a large university though.  We have a smaller end supercomputer also.  You should apply!!!!! It’s a great school!

My school has some HP computers that mostly have Core i3 Ivy Bridge processors, along with some 2012 Mac Minis.

We also have 2015 Macbook Airs and a variety of Chromebooks.

I can crash a computer in 30 seconds by running a .bat file with the contents %0|%0.

I can crash a computer in 1 second by yeeting it.

I also now have about 7 GB of viruses on an autorun flash drive.

That being a state school means it is in part funded by everyone living in that state. Now on your pell grant covering your tuition... I just don't see that happening on anything higher than maybe a 2 year college... the pell grant does help, but it is far from covering the majority of tuition for a 4+ year school.

Now I am not saying there is anything wrong with that, that is what FSA is for, but with the way the IRS is taking over the Federal loan program in 2020... I have a bad feeling for getting that funding moving forward. I mean I just got done fighting the IRS over them changing my filing status in 2014 (because they thought I didn't qualify for head of household) which then said I owed 2400 in back taxed... then tacked on interest and fee's pushing the total over 10k. No clue why they decided to do all of this around the time I filed my 2018 taxes... thankfully I found a decent tax lawyer.

Anyways my point is the IRS likes to do things like the above because most of the time they get away with it... because well they are the federal government. It makes me concerned for the future of education loans when they will try to apply the same system they have in place for taxes.

Well my school had one acorn and a bbc micro

BBC Micros for the win... Although I think my primary school had 3 or 4 of them when I was there... and a single Mac Colour Classic in every classroom.  Then when I went to high school, 90% of the computers were Mac Classics (non-colour), with a smaller room that had some P1/P2 (if i remember correctly) machines that nobody except those doing GSCE or A-Levels were allowed to use. The Macs got binned off about halfway through my time there for PIIIs that were around 450mhz. Quality stuff (to be honest, the PIIIs were just about top of the range when they did buy them).
