Nikon EN-4 battery to Lithium

So I bought 3 D1X cameras off of ebay and 10 used batteries from henrys, had to ship a charger from Japan and it turns out (no real surprise) not a single one works. So I know it has been done in the past there are plenty of references however the one thing that has not been covered completely (mostly due to links being dead) is do the batteries need to be protected or not? I'm thinking about buying a new cheap 6 cell laptop battery pack with Sammy cells and yanking out the 18650's from it as it will be faster and cheaper than trusting ebay.

 

I know the D1X can be fried if I mess up on the polarity of the batteries.
