Help with large house and low speeds!

Mercuryaces

Hey guys, let me preface with the fact that I'm a networking noob. I know nothing. Bear with me.

With that said let me lay out my problem as short as I can. I live in a larger home, its rather long, there are 4 people who live with me. At the top of the hallway is the modem/router combo. The signal does not reach into my  room, so I have a router set up as a repeater hardwired into the ethernet plug in my room. ( our whole house is wired). When running speed tests my speeds can range from 50 mbps to less than 1. Last night I was getting 0.59 mbps down which resulted in me being unable to play my Apex Legends. We are paying for 300 mbps internet.

What can I do to improve my situation? Please help!

Have you looked into a mesh system? I live in a rather large house as well and I went from 1Mbps (if that) to speeds pretty much the same as if I was right next to the router. The downside is that they can be pretty expensive, but I'd say they're worth looking into if you haven't already.

I have done a little looking into it. My main concern is whether my ping will go up a lot if I'm all the way downstream from the main router. Which mesh system do you reccommend? I don't have a lot of money, $250 is about my limit.

If the house is wired is there also a patch panel somewhere in the house?

Are you (or anyone else) against running cables through corridors and stuff? It's a great solution  if you can wall mount the cables to hide the mess.

You should look.  I can't imagine that they would wire the home without a way to actually get anything to those installed ports.  So I guess you should look in closets or attic or some other place someone might think to have installed it.  I guess most folks would use utility spaces like a garage or pantry?

If I can find it, what do I do with it?

You'll have to see what they have installed already.  You might just need to move the modem to where it can be plugged directly in to the panel where it will then be routed to the rooms with jacks installed.
