The OP should have started a survey, 1 vote for 'yes' on the condition of strict monitoring.

+1 for physical security, auto jigglers are a thing people, but your Honda can't be unlocked with a tennis ball. (if you have seen the vid, you know what I'm talking about)

Edit: or on a trial bases to see how it goes, I'm sure the sub could always be nuked if things get out of hand.

You actually can be held responsible. Courts will decide to what extend. If something can cause harm, the one giving exact advice or info, or one overseeing action, can and will be held responsible of what happens. This is basically what behind the Article 13 also. Lets look at examples you used.

 

Guns. If someone buys a gun, could merchant or person who gave out license be held responsible? Yes. As without their actions, person wouldn't have gun to do anything with it. They were acting as gatekeepers.

 

Bypassing school/workplace firewall. This is funny that you would bring it up. As I think these topics are the perfect example why whole subsection about the topic wouldn't work here. While 70% of those who reply will refuse to give help, and often tell about what consequencies will be, there's the 30% who have been here long enough to know the rules and still give "working" solutions. These 30% are the ones why you can't have nice things. Anyway, point being that kid who gets expelled or fined for messing with schools security system can partly shift the blame towards forum, and in grander scale to LMG. Would a member of forum get anything from that? Probably not unless damages were significant. Would it hurt image of LMG as platform and source of good, reliable information? Most definitely.

 

So in the end reasons are same as why political discussion is banned. Bad things/members and disturbance they cause outweigh any usefulness or civil discussion others would have/get.

As much as I would be interested in it, I don't think it would get enough (legitimate) use to justify the extra effort that would be required to manage a subforum like that, sorry.

I'm all for a moderated subforum, although I do agree that we as the community really have to be on the fence and report threads with malitious intents.

 

Also I'm all for restricting acess to the subforum for anybody with <500 posts or something similar

My biggest fear about this would probably be someone using the information and getting LTT punished because they're giving this information.

 

Also what's to stop some people just coming onto this forum and using the info that people would give on the subforum with malicious intent? <500 posts is just a status and it really can't be verified to someone's good natured-ness.

What if it started off focused on Cyber and Security certification tips and topics and discussion.  That way its purely informational and provides a value to people looking to learn how to be more secure with their personal online lives and does have a professional justification.

 

Think things like Security +, CASP, CISSP, CEH etc.

I agree as security through obscurity is horrible. The problem is I ask a question someone answers. I then take down Ecuadors internet and when questioned I say I LEARNED IT ALL FROM linustechtips.com. I don't see how LTT can be help liable though as is possessing knowledge about a certain subject illegal? Well especially in things like Security + and the CASP.  Alot of it is honestly book knowledge and best practice.  Great certs to have and useful to know but they'll hardly tell you how to code a malicious program or perform a SQL injection.  The CEH might enter the gray area only because it does have a practical section I think (haven't approached that cert so I don't know).

People have to remember that a lot of "Ethical hacking" is still largely illegal, unless under incredibly specific circumstances. Given how specific and small those circumstances are, LTT would almost certainly be held liable for information distributed that could cause massive harm.

 

From a legal standpoint, I'd say hell to the no. As interesting as these subjects are, there are too many morons or people of ethically questionable morals, even on the forum already, to safely discuss to any great detail.
