Making a X570 VRM + Features List, (Alpha, no duh lol)

NOW IN BETA, see new post

Because I think that X570 & Zen 2/7nm will make a big splash, and many people on older platforms (i.e. before 7th gen intel, and perhaps zen 1) might decide to upgrade, and there will be a huge amount of motherboards, and it may be hard to decide which one is the best.

This is an alpha (no X570 has even been released yet), and has some (actually mostly) speculation. I based this mostly on prior designs, and some various leaks.

I will continue to update this, and if any of you want to help me with this, please send me a PM. Your help will be greatly appreciated, as this is a daunting task.

What I have so far:

Added Gigabyte,ASRock,MSI,ASUS X570

Biostar flagship

basic wifi/connection etc.

Heres the "key":

VRMs:

8 = true 8 phase (no doublers)

8 (4x2) = Doubled 4 phase, (4 doublers)

4x2 (!) = 4 phase with double the components to look like an 8 phase (no doublers)

8 (?) = 8 inductors, not sure about phase count.

Heatsink: (a + refers to in between)

Watercooled: some top-end boards have built in vrm waterblocks.

Amazing: Fully Finned heatsink (X470 Aorus Gaming 7, X299 Dark)

Great: A decent amount of fins (Z390 Aorus Ultra, Z390 Aorus Master)

Good: Large heatsink, with some fins (X470 Taichi, X470 Aorus Gaming 5)

Medium: Medium heatsink, or Large heatsink devoid of fins/airflow (X470 Gaming Plus, Z390 Tomahawk)

Bad: Medium heatsink with no finnage, and no airflow, or small heatsink (Z390 Prime-A)

None: Bare mosfets, minimal cooling (Gigabyte B360M DS3H)

LAN (From best to worst) :

10Gbe

5Gbe

2.5Gbe

1Gbe Killer/Intel

1Gbe Aquantia

Wifi:

Y (with model number, if possible)

N

here's the actual thing:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1j4X6MKRqaqgn2wbQnHzOfqV145F175Irz_N145KJHM8/edit#gid=0

Anyone can view, please comment whatever you wish, I will accept any form of criticism.

Heres an example from X470 of what an ideal completed row would look like:

Manufacturer:

Name:

Size: Classification: Price: Vcore: VSoc: Controller + Doubler: Mosfets and Amperage Heatsinks: Wifi: LAN: Good Value?
ASRock X470 Taichi ATX Enthusiast 199.99 USD 12 (6x2) 4 (2x2) IR35201 + IR3598 CSD87350 (40A) Good+ Y

Lan:

Gbe Intel

Good value?

Yes, because of its 200$ price tag where it competes against 10 phase VRMs, also strong mosfets, and 8 Sata ports while competitors only have 6.

Probably rather obscure stuff like Aquantia and Tehuti rather than Intel.

Also there are rumors of Thunderbolt???

The X470 Taichi uses an Intel Gbe, Aquantia tends to perform worse.

I'm 99% sure that TB3 will not be supported at all on AMD platforms until it gets integrated to USB 4.

 was not aware that was a thing, just checked, but it just gives you vrms, I might add total amperage (i.e. 12 40A mosfets (with suitable inductors) = 480A total of current.

Besides, I'm planning on making this table more detailed, such as including no. of USB, and M.2, and sata (prob on a different sheet)

Good resource tho, thanks!

It would actually be better imo if you didn't color everything, just makes it harder to read

that will be meaningless as it doesnt take heat output into consideration. Especially in rating mosfets comparing to dualNfets and powerstages as they are rated under less thermal stress.

Do you guys think that making a list with SATA, M.2, USB etc. would be helpful?

if you have time, sure. I just rather people look up the official sites as these things are clearly shown.

I'll try to at least include SATA and LAN. Someone might want to look at mobos with 8 sata ports, or they might want 2.5gbe, or 10gbe.

Yes it would, as that is how I decide for a Board.

And what's imo the biggest differences between them.

Don't forget Graphics Output pls as well. That's also interesting, if you want to use the APU...

But in general, M.2 and how its connected and S-ATA, USB is not unimportant (well, SATA seem to lose its value in favor of M.2).

K, when I'm done with SATA & M.2 etc, I'll work on display outputs, built in audio (?).

thanks for the input!

basically, it gives prioritys, so if you are watching youtube, and steam is downloading a game, you dont get crazy stutters, same applies when you are playing a game, and something is downloading.

Intel NICs well work in almost all operating systems, don't think that's the case for Killer (don't quote me on this). Intel is also preferred by most people because Killer's software is crap.

You should really put Intel on top of Killer in the tier list. Or at least put them on the same "level".

CPU: Intel Core i7-950 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R CPU Cooler: NZXT HAVIK 140 RAM: Corsair Dominator DDR3-1600 (1x2GB), Crucial DDR3-1600 (2x4GB), Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3-1600 (1x4GB) GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 770 DirectCU II 2GB SSD: Samsung 860 EVO 2.5" 1TB HDDs: WD Green 3.5" 1TB, WD Blue 3.5" 1TB PSU: Corsair AX860i & CableMod ModFlex Cables Case: Fractal Design Meshify C TG (White) Fans: 2x Dynamic X2 GP-12 Monitors: LG 24GL600F, Samsung S24D390 Keyboard: Logitech G710+ Mouse: Logitech G502 Proteus Spectrum Mouse Pad: Steelseries QcK Audio: Bose SoundSport In-Ear Headphones

Thats the old E2200, the new one is E2500.

The Killer ethernet is "smart" and gives priorities, such as if you are watching youtube, and steam is downloading a game, you dont get crazy stutters because it gives priority to youtube, same applies when you are playing a game, and something is downloading.

Also, apparently it reduces cpu load.

https://techreport.com/review/29144/revisiting-the-killer-nic-eight-years-on/3

Thats not the E2500, but is a E2400, so should be closer.

I'll try to look at more reviews.

Do you personally think Intel's NICs are better than Killer's NICs (in general)? Or vice versa?
