I'm in germany - should I get a VPN, NOW or wait what happens?

Hans Power

So, I'd have to pay 3.11€ for a 2 year contract for PIA. Unfortunately I have to be rather conservative with my money, otherwise I'd just bite the bullet. So, I'm not quite sure if I should wait and see what'll happen with everything regarding Article 13 or if I should panic buy a VPN, right now. Thing is, there is still no saying how article 13 will manifest itself in actual german law which might deviate quite a bit from what was decided in the EU. The risk in waiting would be that prices could increase due to high demand and the risk in buying now is that I could waste money. I'm rather torn on this and appreciate some input - maybe from people who know a little more about the subject than I do.

Yeah no one mentions the article 11 link tax which is really bad as its a tax on linking information unless a person has permission from the content owner to link the source.

I am really surprised by the amount of misinformation here.

First of all, the directive will not enter into force until it is approved by the european council and is transferred into national law by the member states. Germany is not excactly known to be quick doing that. So in short, this will not come into effect for several years to come. If you buy a VPN now just for that purpose you are just burning money.

As for the long term consequences, we will have to wait and see. The general hysteria is quite entertaining, but it is not helping.

So to answer it shortly: No, don't buy a VPN now

If you answered yes to any of these get a VPN. Then refer to NeuesTestament's reply for further consideration.

I got a lifetime license for a VPN on the cheap off stacksocial.com. I suggest just keep checking their deals or subscribe to their daily newsletter, I love scrolling through that regularly while checking my mails. Regardless of how the local implementations of those EU laws will affect us, a VPN that you can just access whenever you want without having to continually pay for it is imho a super useful tool. Because as of now I personally don't need a VPN often enough to justify a subscription but obviously it's something we all end up needing at some points in time. I'd say even people who aren't tech-savvy will end up needing one once in a while, they just then wouldn't know that a VPN is the solution to the problem they're facing.

More demand doesn't mean higher pricing. More demand and less supply means that. More demand usually means that prices go lower as more companies that can offer service enter markets. The PIA price increase is probably in order to keep their service at good quality. Meaning most likely that upkeep for their servers has gone up and they don't have enough customers to keep things running with current pricing.

Hans, you don't need to panic nor buy the VPN now. I am based in Austria, and i do user PIA as my VPN Provider. But not for panic reasons, just for privacy and security reasons. In my opion everyone should use a VPN - here in Austria we got something called "Vorratsdatenspeicherung" which means the provider has to store your information for at least 6 months, if i am still correctly informed.

each EU Country has 2 years to implement the law and i wouldn't count on it, for them to act swiftly ? after all, we know how slow our goverment is working ?

I'd wait out. As mentioned how this is implemented is still anyone's guess, and what do you gain right this second other than increased security online which most people don't honestly need (unless your in certain countries e.g The UK and it's impending porn block madness or other nations that will remain unnamed).

im living in the EU and not even worried about it, its going to be a while before anything happens if anything does happen

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

It has nothing to do with just posting a link, it's about copy pasting too much of a article without asking for permission.

Get your facts straight.

Absolutely not. It's far from being implemented. You don't know what ends up being implemented in Germany. And even if it's implemented, the latest version of Article 13 isn't THAT bad. Chances are that you won't notice anything. They're trying to sell based on paranoia.

What are the facts then? Like every news source i've seen states if you post a link or article you can be taxed if you don't have permission, the laws are very vague and could be abused to collect money. The people downplaying it as not being that bad clearly don't mind more control over information, its just greed and the music and movie industry likely paid people for the laws to pass. I'm glad i'm not in the EU, because in the US we have Fair Use laws so crap like article 13 and article 11 wouldn't pass.
