It would need to be a barrier on multiple sides. But my phone has a camera bump that acts as a natural positioning stop -- but it's still not perfect, and 99% of the benefit of wireless charging is that it is a (marginally) more lazy-friendly solution than plugging in a cable. But that goes out the window when positioning is finicky.

I don't know, they are so many products like it already on the market, all in a verity of colors and shapes.

Even if it would sale, I don't see how it can compete with it's Apple pricing.

You can find many mod instructions, in doing things in variety of materials, or some stick it under their table.

Pick one that can deliver 10W (for faster charging), and overheating protection, and you are set to do what you want. The circuitry is really inexpensive and dead simple these days.

 

The only thing that I see Apple could do more, is do like what Nokia did with it's phones with wireless charger, and that is have the wireless charger base illuminate when your phone is low battery (it gets the device battery life via Low Powered Bluetooth that their phone support), and so you can put pop on it, and it charges it.

I guess... I'm still not very convinced it's worth the engineering effort. It would make more sense to make a magsafe type cable that snaps into place as soon as you get the phone near it.

Right I guess that's a trade off. You would of thought apple could of developed a better version. Considering 15W wireless charging is coming next year

I think the problem is that they announced too much information at 'launch'. If they hadn't mentioned that you could put 3 devices anywhere on the pad it would have been out last year as planned, but when they realised they announced something that is physically impossible with current technology they did the typical Apple thing is ignore it completely until people have forgot about it and then put out a little statement hoping nobody will notice.

 

Problem was that Apple never really forgot about it. You had mentions of it in iOS 12.2, plus AirPower was actually featured prominently on the airpods packaging (which was itself dated 2018) and the packing literature of various iOS devices, so it seemed that Apple had every intention of releasing it until the very last moment.

This article makes it sound like while Apple probably had a working prototype of AirPower in their lab somewhere, they ultimately couldn’t make it safe enough for consumers. It’s probably for the best that AirPower stays dead.

It feel like 2017 was the year of the premature Apple announcement.  It was so determined to prove that innovation hadn't died at the company that it unveiled multiple produces several months in advance, in some cases without having a good idea of whether or not they'd actually be ready.  AirPower was one, of course, but there was also the HomePod, the iMac Pro... the only one that really made sense was the Mac Pro, and even that didn't make its original release window (it was supposed to be ready in 2018).

 

Apple has gotten better about things since, but the AirPower is a testimonial to the importance of waiting until you're certain you can do something before making a public commitment.
