What phone should I get?

Got my tax return ($154 Canadian) last week & have been thinking about what to spend it on, currently i'm thinking it'll most likely be a phone to replace my LG G3 that I got new for $0 on a 2 year term through my carrier (Virgin Mobile) back in late May 2016 but has been problematic & unusable at times for the past few months (screen flickering & fading/glitching, random restarts & problems connecting to WiFi), it's just a matter of choosing a phone to upgrade to, looking on my local classifieds there's a few options I'd like opinions on:

1.75 year old Samsung Galaxy S7 for $150 OBO, only problem apparently is the screen protector that came with the phone is peeling on the top: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-view-details.html?adId=1420611813

S7 for $130 in "amazing" condition: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-view-details.html?adId=1420519086

2x S7, each got a Otterbox Commuter case & 1 includes a 32GB SD card, $160 each: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-view-details.html?adId=1423315504

Sony Xperia X Performance for $120 or best offer: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cell-phone/kitchener-water...rformance-cellphone/1422442920

Motorola Z Play for $150: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cell-phone/kitchener-waterloo/moto-z-play/1422513267

Motorola Z2 Play for $180: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cell-phone/kitchener-waterloo/unlocked-lenovo-moto-g-z2-play/1423146157

Whatever phone I get would be mainly be used for watching videos, browsing the web (on WiFi), Listening to music, playing games, taking pictures & making calls when needed. I'm currently leaning towards the Samsung Galaxy S7.

If you're going for a flagship the Galaxy S7 is pretty decent (or any flagship from 2 years ago supported by your carrier). If I were you I would either get one S7 and upgrade 18-24 months from now or get two new S7s and upgrade after 3 years ~ if you're planning to use one as a backup after the first dies and just flash the newest version of Stock Android via Lineage OS when the time arrives.

I personally would go for the Moto Z Play cuz it's release in 2016 and (with exception to the Mi Max 2 and Mate 20) it still beats out all other smartphones in battery life. Also, they've stopped production so basically once they sell out, it's gone gone. I bought one myself last month.

Whatever phone you decide to get, I would also add a screen protector and a kickstand case or specifically for the Moto Z Play I also recommend throwing in a Moto Power Pack. It essentially packs your Z Play with 60% more battery life ~ up to a grand total of 22hrs.

Also open-box Moto Z Plays are selling for between $100-$142 USD (C $133-189) as well as a "New" listing for $155 USD (C $207):

And here's the 3 most affordable open-box Galaxy S7s I could find ~ all under $150 USD (C $201):

As you can tell by now, I'm very biased towards the Moto Z Play (do not get the Z2 Play -- it performs marginally better and gets worst battery life) so go buy whichever one is worth more to you. ;)

Good Luck!

Josh

p.s. It looks like the 2 x S7 deal just sold out: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-view-details.html?adId=1423315504&siteLocale=en_CA. I wouldn't get the used "1.75 years old" S7 as non-removable batteries hold less charge over time.

Hmm, "Unlocked (Will work on all networks Except for Freedom and  VIDEOTRON )", I never heard of VIDEOTRON? also, I wonder why it won't work on Freedom?

also, got 2 more replys on r/phones:

"here are the prices i've personally paid on kijiji:

LG G3: 80 cad

LG G4: 70 cad (this is the only one that had issues, had to disable knock-on)

LG G5: 120 cad

LG G6: 170 cad

Samsung S6: 100 cad

Samsung S7: 175 cad

Samsung A5 200 cad (i sold for this price)

I resold every single one except the G3 which I'm still using."

"My recommendation is: ebay, why? Just because of the better deal, BUT definitely check up on import laws, because many times you will have to pay for some fees and other things! And Amazon is like more locally, example if you are from Germany or EU, there's amazon.de and if you order from there, you won't pay additional fees :)"

Got a reply back from another local business that repairs & sells phones:

https://mobileklinik.ca/

"We will have to physical diagnose the phone before we give you a quote on the device. With the issues that you described, it seems that the phone has a Motherboard Issue. In this case, I would suggest you to replace the phone than to fix it up as it will cost you more than the value of your device.

For Android device, we have lots of selection in the range of $185 - $ 250. We have a LG G5 which is at $229 + tax which is a really good deal. It is good in terms of CPU/GPU for mobile gaming and also it has dual rear camera for better quality pictures. If you would like to check our collections, please come by to our store and a technician in store will help you."

I just bought a £80 phone as a backup which is about $154 CAD and it's a Moto E5 Play. It's a good phone for the money but it only has a Geekbench score of around 650. It looks great but it is quite slow, picture taking is limited and the touch screen is quite unresponsive. I got it mainly as a second backup phone.

But if you want a really good phone they don't really start until about £190 ($330 CAD) new. I've done a full market analysis of price vs specifications. I have about 120 phones on the list and there isn't much below that price point:

  • LG G Flex 2 is about £130 and has a score of around 1177 which is good value
  • £145 will get you an Xperia ZA1 with a geekbench score of around 854
  • For £190 the spec will be far superior and you will get a Geekbench score of around 1500+. Phones at this price point include: Honor 8x, Honor Play, Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite, Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, Huawei Honor 10 Lite. The Chinese manufacturers offer a very high spec for the money.

Of course it's not all about the benchmarks. The cameras, ram, storage, screen capability, main body materials, and whether you just like the look of the phone are also very important.

On the S7 that is a good phone if you can get it and it's upgradable to Android 8.0 so no big deal there. It has a Geek Bench score of around 1812 which is excellent.

Just Twitter DMed Freedom Mobile support to find out what frequency(s) I should look for in a phone to make sure it works on the Freedom Network? The reply I got back was "Hey there, you would want the device to be compatible with Bands 4,7,13,66.", I'm not sure how mobile networks work, but from what I can tell looking up the S7 online it supports Band 4(1700/2100), 7(2600) & 13(700) for 4G LTE bands so 3/4 bands mentioned, do it need to be compatible with all 4 bands for it to work or as long as it's compatible with at least 1 of the bands it'll be OK?

Edit: Just done a advance search on www.gsmarena.com for phones with all 4 of those bands & there's 70 results: https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?s4Gs=4,7,13,66

Adding Android & Windows OS with minimum resolution of 1080p & headphone jack reduced it to 32 results: https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?nDisplayResMin=2073600&chk35mm=selected&s4Gs=4,7,13,66&sOSes=2,4

Of those, I looked up some (Unlocked, Open Box/New) of the ones I'm guessing would be in budget (I Know the Samsung S8 or newer or LG G7/G8 likely won't be found in budget & so on)

Alcatel Idol 5s, Cheapest I found on eBay is Brand New & Sealed for C $180.68: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Alcatel-Idol-5S-32-GB-Unlocked-Crystal-Grey-4G-LTE-Smartphone-w-BIG-5-2-Screen/293032994166?hash=item443a20a576:g:ArsAAOSwCYdcYhC3

LG Stylo 4, Cheapest I found is a Open Box for C $220.01: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/LG-Stylo-4-32GB-Aurora-Black-Smartphone-Unlocked-Q710AL/392267983571?hash=item5b54fe6ad3:g:wmkAAOSw8GNcgaKJ

Best Buy Marketplace got it Brand New for $194.85 ($220.18 after Tax, $0.17 more than the one on eBay: https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/lg-stylo-4-brand-new-unlocked-6-2-screen/13029973.aspx

Motorola Moto G5 Plus, Open Box for C $201.49: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Open-Box-Motorola-Moto-G5-Plus-XT1681-32GB-LTE-Unlocked-Gold-Intl-Version/273140735765?hash=item3f9874df15:g:kE0AAOSwmXpcECua

Other good options (and tips):

jd8Eoef.png

note: I did not include higher-performing or newer versions or those shown above either due to poor professional/user reviews or inferior battery life.

More Tips:

Spoiler

Tip #1: do not get the Z2 Play -- it performs marginally better than the original Z Play and gets worst battery life.

Tip #2: Want great battery life? Get a Moto/Samsung mid-range, a Mate 10 Pro, a Mate 20, a Galaxy S7/S8 Active, or an iPhone XR.

Tip #4: Want the best performance? Get whatever flagship you want (especially those listed in the chart). Or whichever phone model has the features you like the best.

Tip #3: The Huawei's "Honor" lineup & Xiaomi phones do not support US "LTE" data bands (Huawei "Mate" phones support all US frequencies).

Also, if you're not too picky about not having an "all screen phone" and bezels I recommend the Galaxy S7 Active. It still ranks among the Top 10 longest-lasting phones compatible on North American networks, is dust-proof, has a shatter-resistant screen, can withstand a drop from 5 feet, and is rated to survive complete submergence underwater (5ft for up to 30min ~ I wouldn't test it though).

Should have same carrier compatibility as the regular S7: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Samsung-Galaxy-S7-Active-G891A-32GB-GSM-UNLOCKED-AT-T-4G-Smartphone-all-Colors/123514203382?

Are you any closer to deciding on anything yet?

Are you any closer to deciding on anything yet?

If I go with Freedom Mobile I need something with LTE Band 66 as that's the Band used where I live, the S7 lineup don't have so if I were to get something from the Galaxy S lineup I'd need a S8 or newer, chances are I won't find one in my budget, unless I get something used that's cracked up, or worse:

Broken S8 for $100, "The phone itself works but the screen is smashed pretty good and the touch doesn’t work. A replacement is around $170. Just realized it’s also missing the sim tray and couldn’t find it anywhere, they cost around $3-$5 at any carrier store and a lot of the times are just free.": https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cell-phone/kitchener-waterloo/broken-galaxy-s8/1426095839

Here's one for $200 "

Screen is damaged. "2 sources of cracks. Small lines across screen. Below these lines sometimes the screen flickers. Screen will need to be replaced. This is around $300 to do I believe.": https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cell-phone/kitchener-waterloo/samsung-s8-for-sale/1417789544

$250 with a cracked back: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cell-phone/kitchener-waterloo/samsung-s8/1426802110

$250, dropped once & got cracked screen, got a Otterbox + 3 other cases for it: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cell-phone/kitchener-waterloo/samsung-s8-64gb-cracked-screen/1423399998

for $100 more ($350) there's a S8 in excellent condition & S8+ with no problems listed :

S8+ with charger & case: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cell-phone/kitchener-waterloo/samsung-s-8-plus/1424927457?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

S8, "excellent condition! Screen is scratchless like new 10/10 condition. Phone works great all around no issues whatsoever. Comes with original charger and a Otterbox cummuter series case. No box sorry as my brother trashed it. Asking 400>>>lowballers ignored." listed for $350: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cell-phone/kitchener-waterloo/samsung-galaxy-s8/1426915944

on eBay, cheapest New/Open Box is a Open Box with minor burn in for a total of C $434.79: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/READ-NEW-OPEN-BOX-Samsung-Galaxy-S8-64GB-SM-G950W-UNLOCKED-Black/113715957920

for a Manufacturer or Seller refurbished, cheapest would be a Seller Refurbished S8 Active for a total of C $365.52: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Samsung-Galaxy-S6-S7-S8-Active-G890A-G891A-G892A-GSM-Unlocked-Smartphone/223369716583?var=522152408442

Needless to say the ones in my budget got issues & the good ones are out of my budget ($250 Canadian Max)

for new or open box, it's basically budget, maybe mid range options:

Alcatel Idol 5s, Cheapest I found on eBay is Brand New & Sealed for C $180.68: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Alcatel-Idol-5S-32-GB-Unlocked-Crystal-Grey-4G-LTE-Smartphone-w-BIG-5-2-Screen/293032994166?hash=item443a20a576:g:ArsAAOSwCYdcYhC3

LG Stylo 4, Cheapest I found is a Open Box for C $220.01: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/LG-Stylo-4-32GB-Aurora-Black-Smartphone-Unlocked-Q710AL/392267983571?hash=item5b54fe6ad3:g:wmkAAOSw8GNcgaKJ

Motorola Moto G5 Plus (2GB Model,XT1681), Open Box for C $201.49: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Open-Box-Motorola-Moto-G5-Plus-XT1681-32GB-LTE-Unlocked-Gold-Intl-Version/273140735765?hash=item3f9874df15:g:kE0AAOSwmXpcECua

Motorola Moto G5 Plus (4GB Model,XT1687) Open Box for C $203.96: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Factory-Unlocked-GSM-CDMA-Moto-G5-Plus-XT1687-5th-Gen-4G-LTE-5-2-32GB-Lunar-Gray/183770059180

New in Sealed Box HTC U11 Life for C $199.88: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/New-in-Sealed-Box-HTC-U11-Life-32GB-T-MOBILE-4G-LTE-UNLOCKED-Smartphone/143206780522?var=442137448315

New HTC Desire 12 for C $223.89: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/HTC-Desire-12-3GB-32GB-5-5-HD-Smart-Phone-Factory-Unlocked-BLACK/392263859096

I made a thread on the Android Central forums on Thursday, bumped it up every day & never got a reply until today, of the ones I just listed (Excluding the S8 with issues), they recommend going for the Moto G6, though when I replied back & asked about the G5+ with the slightly better CPU & extra GB of RAM on the XT1687, the Co-Ambassador Team Lead who was the one who recommend going with the G6 (with a Trusted Member & Ambassador agreeing) replied with "My wife is still using her Moto G5 plus and it's a great phone. I don't see it getting the Pie update in the next future but it's not that bad regarding security patches, February right now. You said that you like watching videos and playing games so a bigger screen (G6) could be good and the camera is a bit better as well. I'm not sure if the G6+ is available in Canada, check that just in case. By the way, I gave my dear old G5S+ to my son and bought the G7+. A bit more expensive and maybe out of your budget but excellent value for money."

so mainly thinking either the Moto G6 or G5+

Edit: just checked for the Moto G5S+, here's a Open Box XT1805 for C $203.97: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Open-Box-Motorola-Moto-G5S-Plus-XT1805-DS-32GB-FACTORY-UNLOCKED-Intl-Version/283006023815?var=583345860686

Apparently that don't have Band 66 though, only the XT1806, Here's the Cheapest New/Open Box, a Open box on auction with 2 days remaining or BIN for C $245.21 total: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Motorola-Moto-G5S-Plus-XT1806-32-GB-Lunar-Grey-Unlocked-Smartphone/303120930599

For the G5+, the XT1681 don't have Band 66, only the XT1687, Not sure of specific model for the G6 except it's the USA model.

Edit: Just thought to check my local classifieds for the Moto G6 & G5+, never saw anything for the G6 but there are 2 G5+:

"Got it as a second phone but never really had to use it. Comes with screen protector and case.", $150: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cell-phone/kitchener-waterloo/moto-g5-plus/1427033661

There's a store that got a G5+ BNIB for $199 (should be about $224.87 after tax): https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cell-phone/kitchener-waterloo/factory-unlocked-lg-g5-lg-g4-moto-g5-lg-q-stylo/1426372527

Also, even though i'm not sure about LG due to history my sister & now me got with reliability issues, I thought I'd check for the LG G6:

only 1 on local classifieds in good condition up to $250:

"For sale is a used LG G6. Includes the original accessories and box, as pictured. 9/10 condition with a few minor scratches on the back. Unlocked to work with all carriers. Asking $250. Offers will only be considered in person. If the ad is up, it's available.": https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cell-phone/kitchener-waterloo/lg-g6-silver-unlocked/1424925154

On eBay, cheapest specific model with Band 66 New or Open Box is a BNIB 32GB H872 (T-Mobile) that would come to C$210.55: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/New-in-Sealed-Box-LG-G6-H872-32-64-128GB-T-MOBILE-LOCKED-UNLOCKED-Smartphone/143130321508?hash=item21533b6264:m:mxl8V8YZfO3b9DvsI2BBzpQ

Dang. Freedom Mobile is tough carrier to crack (great bang for buck though). Not even the S8 Active supports FM bands :P

Here are my recommendations at the moment ~ based on the chart I posted earlier:

Updated deals (is manufacturer refurbished fine?):

If you're looking for a higher-performing model shelling-out 50% to double your budget would yield much better options.

In my opinion though the 3 options above are gonna be the best bang for your bucks right now -- and they work with FREEDOM!!!! :D

Are you sure about that? Looking at https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?&idPhone1=8310&idPhone3=8699&idPhone2=8504#*,*,xt1806

Only the G5S+ (XT1806) got all 4 LTE bands, (4,7,13,66) that's currently active (active/being deployed in the case of Band 13), and apparently 1 of 2 bands in development (41 & 71, it got 41, not 71)

Meanwhile, of those bands the Z Play & ZTE Blade V8 Pro only got 4 & 7 (India Z Play also got 41)

4,7,13,66 is what I was told when I DMed Freedom Support on Twitter (@freedomsupport), their Wikipedia page agrees with that also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_Mobile

According to a year old article on iPhone in Canada about B4 & B66: https://www.iphoneincanada.ca/shaw/freedom-mobile-band-4-band-66-lte/

For where I live (Kitchener, Ontario) B66 is available, if it's the only band available or not i'm not sure & things could have been changed since then, but it only shows B66, not B66+B4 (though B66+B7 and/or B13 may be available, i'm not sure) , regardless to be safe I'd like to make sure whatever I end up getting got B66 if I go with Freedom.

Edit: I'm fine with Refurbished as long as the screen is good (no burn in or scratches on the screen)

Band 4 is available everywhere. Band 7, 13, and 66 are the ones not available across the tiny Freedom network.

if that's the case, why does this eBay seller based in Toronto selling a unlocked S7 https://www.ebay.ca/itm/UNLOCKED-Samsung-Galaxy-S7-G930V-32GB-Smartphone/192521600140?

say "Will work on all networks Except for Freedom and  VIDEOTRON"? When I sent him a message to ask about it he said "It is a different frequency", when I looked it up the S7 got Band 4, 7 & 13, it's only missing Band 66 https://m.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=7960#g930v,*

so if it got Band 4 & Band 4 is what I need then how will it not work on the Freedom Network, or is there another frequency I should be looking at for it to work on the network?

I would recommend to get an S7 if that's what you're looking at,
although I'll just put here that the Blackberry PRIV has much less bloat, and only costs usually 100 pounds (I don't know about Canadian prices), and it comes with the famous BB keyboard (if you want to use it or not), and if you don't want to use it you can just slide the phone down

But if you want to stay with LG, you can get their flagship from 2 years ago (can't remember what it's called) and it's much cheaper than the S7 and it has a removable battery

So I just DMed Freedom Support again, This is what I asked "Hi, just wondering but of those 4 Bands, what's used/available in Kitchener, Ontario and surrounding areas? From research I've done I think it's Band 66 though I've been told Band 4 is available everywhere that it's Band 7, 13 & 66 that's not available across the tiny Freedom Network?", The reply I got was the following "Hey there, thanks for reaching out to us today. You are correct in that the main band is band 66, as well as band 4, our extended range LTE band runs on band 13, however, it currently has not rolled out in the Kitchener area. You can find more information on the extended range LTE network here: https://frdm.mobi/2VNovSM"

https://www.freedommobile.ca/en/support?q=Where is Extended Range LTE available

So basically it's Band 4 & 66, with Band 13 for Extended Range but that hasn't rolled out yet where I live.

Band 66 isn't available in Eastern Ontario since Videotron owns the frequency there. Everywhere else however it is the primary band.

If you read what you linked from GSMArena, you'll see that it says 930A (AT&T version) after the GSM bands. The Verizon version does not support the bands you need.

To be fair the PRIV's keyboard isn't exaaactly Blackberry quality. It's quite shallow, and pretty cramped by the design of the phone.

Can't wait to see what they do with the next Key phone though.

Out of Curiosity, I just checked  local classifieds for phones with WIND listed as the carrier (Wind=Freedom) in my $250 Max budget & found 3:

Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 32GB (SM-A520W) for $100 firm "Phone has small damage to the bottom right of the screen, but it does not affect the touchscreen / buttons at all. The LCD has no damage to the display and is in perfect condition. See images. Battery is still on great condition, and has never been discharged below 20%. Charging port is in perfect condition. Stereo jack works perfectly.": https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cell-phone/kitchener-waterloo/samsung-galaxy-a5-2017-32gb-freedom-mobile/1422446611

Samsung Galaxy S7 32GB, "Comes with Phone, Fast Charger, Case, micro SD card adapter, box, sim ejector tool, and USB adapter. Asking for $240 obo": https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cell-phone/kitchener-waterloo/samsung-galaxy-s7-32gb-with-case/1427280761

LG V30 64GB, 9.5/10 condition, comes with case, $250: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cell-phone/kitchener-waterloo/lg-v30-64gb/1426091360

Never thought of the LG V lineup, but apparent'y the V30 is better than the S7 so that's something I need to look into if I give LG a 2nd chance.

Well now that you mention it B66 is the only Freedom Mobile frequency that the the V8 Pro and Z Play do not support.

At your budget (C $150) that whittles down my recommendation to the Moto G5S Plus:

It seems like you're essentially getting a C $150 coupon. Is the G5S Plus something you're considering? If not, would you be okay with stretching that a bit to C $200 or $250 for better options?

$250 is my absolute max, if I can get something with good Bang/Buck for less though(preferably better performance than the LG G3 I'm coming from)that would be preferred.

Edit: Just looked for the LG V30 New/Open Box on eBay & I think I found a eBay scammer:

New V30 (VS996) for C$101.29, new eBay account created yesterday based in the USA but the phone is in Germany: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/LG-V30-VS996-V30-64GB-Silver-Verizon-Wireless-4G-LTE-Smartphone/352641539817?epid=518801246&hash=item521b12dee9:g:Pg0AAOSwIfBcskCR

Next cheapest V30 that's legit would come to C$310.12 total for a Open Box H931 “Unlocked for any GSM carrier world wide. Works in the U.S & Overseas. Includes LG Charger & USB Type C cable. In an good condition and can be rated 9 out of 10. Blemishes can be expected due to handling and unlocking. Has light shadows on the screen. It may not come in the original Box. Includes 3 months Unlimited Talk & Text & 8GB Data a month by Mint Mobile.”: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/LG-V30-H931-64GB-Silver-GSM-Unlocked-Phone-A-Free-3-Months-Service-Plan-SHDW/192754614996?var=492896509242

Cheapest Manufacturer refurbish is pretty much the same from the same seller for roughly C$1.56 more than the Open Box: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/LG-V30-H931-64GB-4G-LTE-Unlocked-Smartphone-SHDW-B-Free-3-Months-Service-Plan/192810838906?hash=item2ce46beb7a:m:mmqvjpYOsnS-BJ6CuOF3VIw&var=492948908044

Same seller got a Seller Refurbished one for C$265.52 that's pretty much the same (Stiil Shadows/ghosting (burn in), except instead of the 3 months of Mint Mobile it "Includes a 1-year Warranty from Consumer Priority Services": https://www.ebay.ca/itm/LG-V30-H931-64GB-Silver-4G-LTE-GSM-Unlocked-Smartphone-1-Year-Warranty-SR-SHDW/173861961342?var=472580421821

They are out of budget though except for the obvious scam or the used local one in 9.5/10 condition w/ case for $250

Update: Search for a phone is going on hold for a couple of weeks, my sister-in-laws dad is in the hospital up in Ottawa & I ended up lending her $250 to go towards the plane ticket to be with him so I won't have the money to buy a phone until she is able to replay the loan, in the meantime there's a Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime around that my mom had that no one is currently using and was basically kept as a backup so I could use it until I get the money for another phone.

I wouldn't go for a flagship (not even one released 2 years ago) because they're essentially platforms for companies to show-off the highest performing chips and most nifty features. This also means that the advertised "40% more power efficiency" goes to boosting performance instead and exchanging battery space for new "featured" hardware rather than maintaining or increasing battery life. The only exception I know if of to this is the Huawei Mate 20.

Certain flagships showcase exclusive features like special OS functions, 6+ cameras, 20-41MP sensors, physical zoom lenses, screen folding, 4K displays, wireless-pad charging (remote charging is still a few years out), reverse wireless charging/power-share, support for "desktopification", and others that might be worth the buy if you're really into a certain feature.

Otherwise, a $250-$550 midrange has all the features ~ if not better battery life and comparable performance to yesteryear's flagships.

Take the performance of your Galaxy Grand Prime for example: it was released 2 years after the iPhone 5 and scores just shy of 7,000 higher on Antutu (20,428 vs. 13,608). The Moto G5S Plus scores triples that.

This is typical of any particular generation of well-rated midrange phones: they inherit the features and performance of flagships 1-2 years before, have more optimized power consumption, and cost a fraction of the latest flagships.

So I just came back from a local grocery store with a mobile booth in it, I asked there last week if they do activations for Freedom & how much, they said yes it would be $10+tax for the sim card, no activation fee so $11.30 total, went there tonight & found out/was told the Grand Prime was locked to Virgin so I would have to call Virgin to get it unlocked & even if I get it unlocked that because it's a old phone it might not even work on Freedom, I told my sister in law when I came home & she said age shouldn't matter as long as the phone works it should work, he just said that to try to get me to upgrade because they don't make money unless they sell phones, which he offered me 1 of 2 phones on a plan with Freedom, either a Motorola Moto E5 Play or a Samsung Galaxy A8 for $50/month ($10 more than what I'm paying now, $20 more than the plan I was planning on getting) for the phone with a plan with unlimited minutes, texts & 5GB of data:

https://shop.freedommobile.ca/devices/Samsung/Galaxy_A8?sku=887276251219&planSku=Freedom Big Gig %2B Talk 5GB

https://shop.freedommobile.ca/devices/Motorola/Moto_E5_Play?sku=723755125940&planSku=Freedom LTE%2B3G 9.5GB Promo

I told him I'd think about it (though I may just wait until I get paid the $250 I'm owed & get something else?), if I were to accept one of them then perhaps the Samsung Galaxy A8?

I'd say the Galaxy A8 is a steal if you are really getting the phone completely free just by signing a 24-month contract (aka $0 down & $0/mo MyTab). ?

That is if how I understand MyTab works aligns with these explanations:

Any of these below from Ebay are great options as well as long as you verify that they work with Freedom Mobile LTE/B66 (IMEI in images should be correct):

You could also play it safe and get the Moto G6 Play (good alternative) or E5 Play (underpowered IMO) instead, but if the "$0 Phone" deal with $0 additional per month with a $50/mo plan for 24+ months is truely legit (I would triple check) then GET the Galaxy A8!

Let me know how it all turns out! ;)

was $0 with $0 mytab on the $50 plan but I just checked the website & price went up since then to $0 with $0 mytab on $60+ plans so with the $55($50 with autopay) plan I was initially offered it would be a $5/month my tab so I'd be paying $60/month ($55 with autopay) with $5/month going towards the phone so $5 over 24 months=$120 on a phone with a $489 MSRP for $369 saved over 2 years.

I had to head out today to drop something off for my mom & out of curiosity I stopped in to a actual Freedom location to see if they had any older phones on display that's no longer listed on the website though the prices wasn't as I expected, they had the LG G6 for $1-2/month mytab less than the G7 ThinQ (G7 ThinQ is $6 mytab with $50+ plan, G6 was $4 or $5 mytab, the G7 ThinQ would likely be the better deal for the extra $24 or $48 over 2 years), they also had the V30 ThinQ, I forget what the pricing was  but it was either the same or slightly more mytab ($8 my tab perhaps?) compared to the G7 ThinQ.

For $40/month max (before tax) for a plan to pay what I'm currently paying with Virgin, I could get the Moto G6 Play for $0 with $0 mytab on a $40+ plan (there's a plan with 2GB of data for $45 ($40 with autoplay) while the 500MB plan I was considering was $30 ($25 with autoplay) so $15/month more for a extra 1.5GB of data, that's $1/100MB

Also keep in mind that the mytab is added to the monthly plan cost that's taxed (13% HST here in Ontario), to use the Galaxy A8 example I used above: $50/month+$5/month mytab=$55/month+13%=$62.15/month

For a more expensive example, here's the G7 ThinQ with the $45/$40 plan I mentioned with the Moto G6 Play:

$49 upfront+13%=$55.37 Upfront, $40/month+$25/month mytab=$65/month=13%=$73.45/month

With that being said, their $0 phone event is on now:

Quote

Get select phones for $0 up-front with a $0 monthly MyTab for 24 months on plans starting at $25/mo.◆ with Digital Discount.

Offer ends May 9. Conditions Apply.

Select phones are the following:

Samsung Galaxy A8

Motorola Moto G6 Play

LG Q Stylo+

Alcatel GoFLIP

ZTE Z557

The $25/month listed in the promo is likely for the ZTE Z557 & Alcatel GoFLIP as those are listed for $0 with $0 mytab on $25+ plans while the G6 Play is $0 $0 $40+, Q Stylo+ is $0 $0 $50+ & Galaxy A8 is $0 $0 $60+

Edit: Preparing to send a Twitter message to Freedom Support to ask if it's possible for stores to have clearance sales on older phones no longer listed on the website & I remembered that they also had the Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra on display there, IIRC it was $0 $0 $50+ though I could be mistaken.

Edit: This is the message I sent to Freedom Support on twitter:

Hi, I'm just wondering if it's possible for stores to have clearance sales on older phones that's no longer listed on the website? I was at the The Boardwalk location in Kitchener this morning to have a look out of curiosity to see if they had older phones available that might not be listed on the website & I saw they had the LG G6, LG V30 ThinQ & Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra on display though listed prices wasn't very good considering the prices listed for newer phones such as the LG G7 ThinQ so I was wondering if discounts on the older phones are possible to clear out leftover stock to make room for newer phones in the store? I'm currently in the market for a $0 phone for $40/month or less (Freedom 2GB plan w/ digital discount), the best phone I saw for that price is the Motorola Moto G6 Play & was wondering if it's possible to get a older phone such as the LG G6, LG V30 ThinQ or Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra on clearance for that price?

Hi there, Occasionally they do but the pricing of those devices is dictated by the manufacturers themselves so the deals may not be as lucrative as what you are looking for. You can always chat with the team in the location and see if they have anything that would work for you within your budget, they may have some other work arounds such as an open box device or other offers that are available in store only. -J.V

Also keep in mind that the mytab is added to the monthly plan cost that's taxed (13% HST here in Ontario), to use the Galaxy A8 example I used above: $50/month+$5/month mytab=$55/month+13%=$62.15/month

Not bad......

For a more expensive example, here's the G7 ThinQ with the $45/$40 plan I mentioned with the Moto G6 Play:

$49 upfront+13%=$55.37 Upfront, $40/month+$25/month mytab=$65/month=13%=$73.45/month

The G7 ThinQ is not I would get personally cuz it has really bad battery life (like worse than phones released 5 years ago bad). But if you're getting if for the performance and plan to charge using Quick Charge 4.0 and/or Qi pad (both degrade the battery faster than using a cable with standard charging speeds) then I guess it's an alright option.

With that being said, their $0 phone event is on now:

Select phones are the following:

  • Samsung Galaxy A8
  • Motorola Moto G6 Play
  • LG Q Stylo+
  • Alcatel GoFLIP
  • ZTE Z557

The $25/month listed in the promo is likely for the ZTE Z557 & Alcatel GoFLIP as those are listed for $0 with $0 mytab on $25+ plans while the G6 Play is $0 $0 $40+, Q Stylo+ is $0 $0 $50+ & Galaxy A8 is $0 $0 $60+

Unless you're into a budget phone with stylus support the LG option here is sub-par ~ also due to poor battery life. You would better off with the A8, G6 Play, or any of these "open-box" phones from Ebay I mentioned earlier.

I would also like to point-out that there is a 10GB plan with unlimited talk & text for $55.

I guess you can try digging around Freedom locations for open-box options, but again my recommendation would be pay ~$150 CAD upfront (from Ebay) something like the Moto X4 and then save $$$ by picking any plan you want (like the $40 3GB 4G + 6.5GB 3G plan).

Just curious: what else do you do in life besides shopping for phones?
