Yeah I dont like the thought of automation. I dont want a self driving car tbh. I dont trust my life to a computer program. I know some will argue that it will be statistically safer but I would rather die because of my own mistakes rather than a automation issue. Also I am a better driver than most so those statics are useless. It would be like determining my chances of being able to complete a task based on the average intelligence of people in the US. Most people are quite dumb so it would make a prediction based on the assumption that I am also dumb which I am not.

Yup, you can however go much faster than 60 perfectly safely on some of them - Went over the mountain the other day probably at an average of 80-90 no problem (although some, if you did more than 20-30, you'd be in a hedge or across the front of another car faster than you could blink). There is one in particular that heads out to one of the beaches, it is single track with a couple of passing places & blind bends and because it gets used by about 10 people a day at most, the road surface hasn't been redone probably since it was first tarmaced 50+ years ago so it potholed to hell and back. It is quite amusing seeing anyone do above 10mph along there.

The loss for a generator motor is minimal and inverters are pulling power from an electric system that is producing excess.

The EV batteries are placed in a spot normal not used in current cars, so not much different

 

A generator adds/uses the amount of power used by the inverter from the fuel given to it.

1000w needed is 1000w lose of fuel. (plus inefficiencies)

1000W in fuel is not much fuel. I could run that off the excess my trucks push with little change in fuel economy.

Put a sticker on the camera. Problem solved....  BTW this is just so dumb beyond description. Why waste money on these symptomatic treatments when they could treat the root cause pretty easily. Just revoke the driving license of those who are clearly do not fit for that kinda responsibility....

Almost all new cars in America have this. Most that don't are uber cheap like $14,000. But cars that are $20,000+ have auto braking, car blindspot detection, and lane keeping. Just drove 1,200 miles in a KIA optima and there were stretches of 100+ miles where I didn't even turn the wheel

ya again it goes to efficiencies, a ICE is 20% efficient and a generator is 95% efficient, and a inverter is also 95% efficient. so if you need 1000Wh at the plug the inverter needs 1050wh, so the generator needs 1100wh of mechanical energy, which will consume 5500wh of fuel. which would cosume 0.162 galons of fuel, or $0.40 of fuel ($2.50/gal) where a battery pack would have effiency closer to 95% meaning you would only need 1050wh or $0.20 ($0.20/kwh)

 

I am not going to break down size and weight but in a pure cost/efficiency point Batteries beat generators.

 

I feel it is a good avenue to go down, but we sure are not ready to replace everything right now.

 

I personally would not get a EV truck right now, but a commuter car I would consider it.

Better reconsider, that use case is the worst for the battery with the frequent starts and stops. One thing batteries do not like is high charge/discharge currents. Top it off with the fact that in cold weather the capacity drops like a brick dummy....

ICE is inefficient because most energy is wasted as heat, electrical energy included. I see no difference in fuel consumption running my diesel with nothing on vs running it with lights on, trailer hooked up, radio on, and a 140W inverter charging some batteries. I do, however see a difference in how warm my batteries get.

I would hope there would be a way to manually disable the speed limiter, if for a short time or something.

Considering wildfires were already overtaking people in cars in california, I can image a few situations where speed limiting would be harmful.

my commute is a long consistent speed drive, and I would get the battery fill up to be low so the battery would last longer.

but I am not going to be in search for a car for another 5 years so by then things should be better.

considering the rate of discharge and how companies have dealt with the limited charge and discharge rate. i dont think this is much of a concern.

They just managed to conceal the problem with a bigger battery and some trickery around how much capacity is exposed but the problem is still there and it is very relevant. ATM EV's will reach BER way sooner than IC cars.

in other words. they know its an issue, and they are dealing with it by having lower capacity with overprovisioning like SSDs. 

 

and like SSDs. the issue is there, but the goal is to minimize the effect, something they are doing.

SSD's arent the best example... They can do OP without negative effects, but in a car doing the same with a pretty heavy and very expensive part is not the answer. Even with this OP what i said still stands, and it matters to a lot off ppl that their car is sustainable for more than 5-10 years.... And not just car's but other vehicles too. For instance the motorbike i use in winter was made in 1987 but its still running. It reached the point where i had to do a full overhaul but it was like 100€ max. Ever since then  i didnt have to touch it aside from small things like seal and transmission oil change.... (2T OFC)

providing you can get batteries. that alone will breathe life into the car again. yes its expencive, but a electric car has less moving parts, and in theory at least is more reliable. (less points of failure)

Electronics will give in too at some point, especially the high current stuff. As for batteries it will cost way more than your car's value at that time, probably a multiplier higher than 2....

so does a lot of repairs that old cars face..........

 

as an example. a regular swap of timing belts can cost between 500 and 1500$. 

 

and that is something you need to change regurarly (as in x time afterwards or after certain range driven). its not like ICs dont have maintinence parts. and that is something you will continusly pay for and more often that a battery belt. 

 

electronics will give out at some point, though i havent heard how long that takes before it starts being a concern

Yeah but that is do at 120000 km or more, and nowhere near the cars current value. Plus the price will vary based on where you do the repair.

Even EV's have those(oil, brakes, etc), and we dont have the foggiest idea about the electric motor's longevity and the price of the parts(i would bet it wont have any, buy the whole unit).
