Until GFX cards started going for ludicrous money, eBay was a great place to get used gear.

Then the great crypto crazy/insanity gripped the nation and everything seemed to go up for 50%

Now I stick to local sales via CL/Newegg and on occasion, Amazon

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Yeah. Ram use to pogo stick jump up down, up depending on demand/supply/rarity/retro demand. But the GPU/Crypto craze crushed GPU prices. :(

I saved a ton by going second hand on my rig. Basically saved half price. Yeah it's old, but it goes strong and had no troubles (but I do buy almost new or well looked after stuff... mind you, I really need to swap this motherboard, it's super ghetto!).

Buying my parts on eBay via auctions netted me a computer worth a couple grand for about $350 when all was said and done. Excellent resource, if you're willing to put in the time and effort. I honestly find it more fun than buying parts from a store. Though I find it odd one would choose to spend more to buy parts on eBay than locally or elsewhere. I kind of get why you did it for the video. You wanted all the parts to come from eBay. But generally if one's buying from eBay, they're just after the lowest cost, not the same source.

The prices have dropped drastically. However, I've found that if you're looking for single items computer wise on eBay you won't get great deals. If you buy the bundles, or complete systems, you'll get an absolute steal.

I'm bothered by the slow RAM chosen for this build. Sure it works, but we all know how much Ryzen loves its high RAM speeds. Personally, I'd only buy a minimum of 3000mhz kit when building Ryzen, even with a tighter budget. It makes enough of a difference for it to be worth it imo.

you kinda missed the mark, many retailers like Newegg have Ebay stores and some items can be much cheaper there then on the regular Newegg, for example this time last year i was building my mom a new computer and I found the Fractal Meshify-C ATX on Newegg on Ebay for $74.99 where it was like $89.99 + Shipping on Newegg proper then add to that Ebay had one of those 20% off one day coupon codes (max $100 savings) and so after that code I ended up paying $59.19

Going to Ebay for pricing doesn't require you buy used jank/sketch hardware.

also who said you had to do all your shopping in 1 place? only fools buy everything from 1 place, take for example you used a 1600x, i could go to Microcenter and get a 1700x for cheaper then you paid for the 1600x and I could get an even BETTER deal by going with the regular 1600 which they are selling for $80, absolutely NO REASON to pay DOUBLE the price to get the X variant and even if you wanna play the "we don't have a Microcenter nears us" card even Ebay has BUY IT NOW prices a solid $40 cheaper then the 1600x, the value just isn't there for the 1600X.

Provided you can actually reach those speeds, my 1700 won't boot reliably if I clock my RAM past 2800 Mhz, just goes into a boot loop with 1 out of 6 times it will boot at 2933 and thats on whats supposed to be 3,000 Mhz ram (albeit NOT the specifically labelled as Ryzen compatible variant, the intel variant). First Gen Ryzen is known for RAM speed issues.

Some of you guys are missing the point about the whole build using eBay.

They did that to showcase that not everything is cheaper on eBay. So obviously in real life, if it's cheaper to buy from NewEgg or Amazon, then you'll do that. But for the basis of this video, it makes sense to buy everything from eBay, and then show what the discount (or price premium, in a few cases) was compared to retail.

Remember guys, this was the eBay build, not the "Cheapest PC" build.

Buying whole system from single retailer will always be cheaper and more convenient, I mean, if I order everything from Germany, entire system in bits will cost me 25€ in shipping. If I order anything from eBay it's 20€ per piece since it doesn't come from same seller. And even when it does, they usually stack the shipping prices. And I'll get it in under 1 week time.

eBay is great though if you're looking for individual components that mostly come from China coz free shipping most of the time. Also depends greatly on country and its import policies. My country has rather shit policy and they'll tax you at 22% VAT for any purchase over 22€ (I think it's still the samne tiny limit). Meaning I basically only buy goods under that value from outside EU, because it's just not worth the effort because then you have to pay customs operations and tax and it takes way longer to get the stuff than just order it from within EU at "full price" and not have to deal with any of the customs crap. I'm guessing Canada doesn't have such draconian import policy otherwise Linus would have mnentioned it...

They had to wait for 1 month. I'd say that's a pretty huge negative...

Yes that's a negative. But not more expensive. ;)

I'd also argue on the convenience aspect, sometimes. Some of the time a retailer will do everything you want. Sometimes stock will be elsewhere. Something like a GPU may not be in stock. So the Ebay + retailer is usually a good option, eg for "open box" discounts (though Amazon and most stores do it direct anyhow).

BTW, lots of things not mentioned or incorrect with the video, eBay doesn’t particularly mean used or auctions, in fact they’re lots of brand new items posted on eBay that aren’t on auction, secondly, the reason it took a month is not because you bought from a bunch of different sellers, but infact the reason is that you live in Canada, and customs take a while between the United States and Canada (due to the high populairty of buying drugs off of the deep web)  buying things from eBay is just like amazon, amazon doesn’t have all of the items in their warehouse but instead have actual normal sellers posting on there paying a monthly fee and a fee for each sale, just like eBay but eBay doesn’t have a fee per sale unless it uses special listing powers, such as putting it right on the top for a 15% fee. FYI coming from a person who uses eBay a lot, if you get a counterfeit or fake item from eBay you can get a instant refund and get to keep the item, but on amazon they’d open a investigation and if the product never said for example you buy an umbrella but it shows a umbrella that resembles a specific brand but if the title is very vague on what it is like RAIN PROTECTOR UMBRELLA NICE QUALITY, they aren’t entitled o give ou what’s on the picture, but eBay has a strict rule about that and will ban a seller things like this. Thank you for reading and I hope you can rethink what you said about it being jank and ghetto, because it really isn’t.

Customs is the only reason they had to wait, if it was from the us to Canada a delay is expected, but from the us to another place in the us, shipping will be reasonably fast.

Not true, actually. In this case, some of our parts came from Canadian sellers and still arrived in about the same amount of time (some of the US items arrived sooner). We also thought about shipping to a US PO box, but the shipping time wouldn't have been significantly shorter, and we'd have had to pay more by the time all was said and done, particularly if we include the time spent going down and dealing with customs in person.

I'm not entirely sure. In the UK, I've seen a lot of "UK sellers" that take the same time as China ones... and as far as I can see, just use a UK warehouse/Post box to funnel through stock. So... yeah. Some is legit local, but most local people use quicker post around here (so 1 week max... but Canada post times may differ? You are a bigger country :P ).

In Canada, there are large numbers of actual Canadian sellers, that stock in Canada, and ship out within a day or two. Yes there are some that are essentially a fake front for a Chinese seller, but those aren't as common for "Canadian" located items.

In Canada, shipping times can vary greatly, it depends on what service level you pay for. The cheapest levels can take 2-3 weeks to cross the entire country.

Thanks. As said, in the UK it is a mixture. And I can only say from experience in the PC sales category, when it comes to second hand, it's all local, when it comes to cheap new stuff, seems a lot is China. When it comes to average priced recent stuff, it's shop excess/bulk sales from local firms. Most our mail is under a week, as no one really uses "business post (2 weeks)" for parcels here.

Wow, so in Canada you can get up to 3 week wait times on parcels? Even locally? ?

Locally? No.

Buuuuut Canada is 9302 km wide. Yes that's right. Over 9000. Take the UK, for example. It's only 968 km tall, at the longest point (Cornwall to the top of Scotland). So Canada is literally 10 times larger, and that's not even counting the northern territories.

But if I'm sending something from say, Toronto to Ottawa, the slowest parcel service should arrive in a week or less. Toronto is 351 km from Ottawa (as the bird flies - 447 km by road).
