We're gonna need more info than that. The answer could be anything from Athlon 200 GE to i7-9700 to Threadripper 2950X depending on workload.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

I'm actually in the process of returning my 9700k for the Pentium.

 

OP, don't make the mistake I did, just get the Pentium while you're ahead.

The best CPU for a workstation is the one you can afford and that will allow you to profit from it.

 

My workstations did 3D. When I did CPU rendering, the more cores the better. In the old days that meant using multiple computers to get multiple cores. The amount of cores depends on the revenue the computer can create. For the type of 3D work I did my budget has been around $3000. I usually used 2 $1500 computers because if one went down I could miss a deadline and lose a customer. 

 

So my main workstation in 1993 cost about $1500(486 50hz) and my workstation in 2016(the last time I built a workstation) cost around $1500 dollars(i7 6700k).   

If I was building 2 workstations today I would probably go with a R7 2700x.  If I was was building one I would probably go with a 12 core TreadRipper (2920X).

 

Other disciplines need different setups and that I know nothing about.
