Norwegian phones sent personal information to China

Owners of Nokia's 7 Plus might sent sensitive information to a server in China for several months. Finland's Datatilsynet has now started investigations after NRK's disclosure.

In February, we got a tip from Henrik Austad, a reader who had monitored the traffic on his Nokia 7 Plus. He noticed that the phone often contacted a server and sent off a data packet. The package was sent unencrypted and when he inspected the contents of the package he was worried.Every time the phone was switched on, the screen activated or unlocked, his geographical position, as well as the SIM card number and the phone's serial number went to a server in China.

When we contacted CNNIC, we were told that the state-owned telecommunications company China Telecom was the owner of the domain.

 

so, what could this mean? another ban? or is it even worse?

I think this is just someone that didn't care (or forgot to) remove the tracking code from the firmware when compiling the non China version, after all, Nokia smartphones at the moment is just a brand used by TCL HMD global which if I remember is a Chinese company.

 

EDIT: HMD is Finnish. I talked out of my head.

That is what the official statement from HMD said. 

 

Well it said it was an activation request that was sent to the wrong country. Though it begs the question if it would need to send all that info to do one of those requests. 

 

Even then it is interesting to see it constantly reporting to china. Hopefully the Finnish investigation manages to get a good look at the situation and see if Chinese models constantly do the same there. If so, it is locationtracking, even if it only reports the closest celltower

Nokia makes really good phones. This shouldnt be concern from western or indian customers, but for people in China it could be something to think about. But Iphones are most likely the most private bet in China.

Agreed, and they get a steady stream of updates, as well. I am quite confident that this tracking-stuff isn't intentional on Nokia's part -- it could be a mishap, or it could be some 3rd-party who has been adding the tracking-stuff when the phones have been sitting in a warehouse somewhere. Wouldn't be the first time such a thing happens.

Might be a requirement for Chinese bound phones that made it to some, or all other phones.

HMD is a finish company, but they seem to have China as the market they focus most on.

They could've made the firmware for Chinese-market first and forgotten to remove such software from it when they customized the firmware for other markets. That has also happened before with other manufacturers, so wouldn't be entirely that fucking surprising.

btw, HMD global is a Finnish company and not a Chinese company.

From my understanding, the spesific code it's about is not Nokia/ HMD Global code, it is Qualcomm created code. (That all manufacturers can choose to use or not)

 

I bet that code is required thing on phones in China. Wasn't it a similar thing that happened with OnePlus?

Are you referring to the "Engineer Mode" - thing that was a pretty big scandal for them?

HMD sells a lot in both China and India. 

 

Believe they sold about 250 000 phones in 5 min in China. Dunno if that was the Nokia 7 plus only or total sales. But, even then its impressive  for a company like Nokia

 

Wouldnt surprising if the cooperate with Chinese telecom to get better salesterms or something.

The scenarios i see:

 

  • All Nokia Phones send an activation code to a server and this misshap caused it to send to China instead of Norwegian servers. And when it didnt get a confirmation code it repeats the process.
  • This is a set of tracking measures put into effect in china to have rough tracking of users. Either for the state or Chinese Telecom. 
  • This is a confirmation that is required in China by Chinese telecom and its a misshap. 

We will have to see what Finnish inteligence picks up.

One of the scenarios above i guess. The software is probably on HMD's but shouldnt have been activated or installed on certain devices. 

 

Nokia is most likely fine for most people. We need confirmation on what the request was aiming to do and if HMD's statement is true.
