Red "The Beast" Build Log / 2014 - Present

Hello there,

 

I decided to make a build log since I was upgrading like crazy since 2014.

 

I'll refine this more when I have time.

 

This is my pre-built system I bought in August of 2014.

 

It had 780 TI SLI in it OCed to 1163Mhz on each one.

4790K with DH14 air cooler at 4.8Ghz (Barely stable)

Single 120GB SSD etc.

 

 

Upgrades to support 780 Ti SLI and OCed 4790K

 

 

This is how it looked after.

 

 

The motherboard I had is GA-Z87X OC FORCE with PLX chip so that 780 Ti at SLI can run at 16x and 16x speeds.

 

 

 

Then here's another image of that one from the inside:

 

 

It was lovely OCing this to about 1163Mhz.

 

In here I had to switch the case to something different and I was using an InWin GrOne case.

This is after I upgraded the PSU to a 1000W RM1000.

I also upgraded the cooler to H115i from Corsair.

 

I ran Heaven Benchmark to see the scores also.

 

 

I bought 4K 60Hz monitor as I wanted to utilise my 780 TI SLI to the fullest. I bought it for £320 in Late 2014 / 2015.

 

Surpsingly, Shadow of Mordor was running at about 80 - 90 FPS at 4K high!

 

 

My next upgrade was in 2016 when I sold my 780 Ti SLI and bought GT210 to have display output with my 6800K. Bought Rampage V used on E-Bay.

 

 

After this I decided I needed a new case.

 

 

Bought ThermalTake Core X5 Green Riing as it had lots of space and the motherboard was E-ATX.

The red spiraly bois were a bad idea.

Bought 500GB Samsung EVO 850 with The Division for free (which I actually played quite a bit)

 

 

However I liked how it looked at the time.

 

I was stuck with this until I upgraded to 1080 Ti. I was very patient waiting for a decent GPU.

 

 

I later installed 3000 RPM fan and I was wearing headphones to keep the GPU below 50C when gaming.

 

 

Then I decided to go SLI hybrids. I was missing SLI.

I was running 2700X at 4.2Ghz and 1080 Ti SC2 Hybrids SLI with Crosshair VI Hero. I had 1800X before that at 4.2Ghz (which was highest anyone could do on it anyway)

 

At this point I also bought PG348Q 3440x1440 100hz monitor and PG279Q 165Hz 2560x1440 monitors.

 

 

 

I then decided to do "proper loop" with Phoenix MLC radiators and their convenient quick disconnects. Bought 3x 360mm and 1x 240mm.

 

 

In between this I decided to sell my 1080 Ti hybrids and go with 2080 Ti SLI.

 

 

Had all the blocks ready etc.

 

When I assembled it all, I also decided to buy Lian Li 011 AIR.

 

 

This was before I decided to water cool the GPUs.

 

 

This was when I water cooled it all.

 

360mm + 240mm but since I ran out of space (due to irregular size of Phoenix MLC) so I bought Thermaltake Core X9.

 

 

In here I was running 360mm for 1st 2080 Ti, 2nd 360mm for 2nd 2080 Ti and 360mm + 240mm loop for just the CPU 9900K.

 

After 2 months of running it I decided to go full custom loop:

3x 480mm thickest radiators from EK etc.

 

And here is what I'm building now, it's not properly done yet but the loop works and the temps are insane.

 

 

Here are temps at full load:

 

When it's overclocked, temps go up to 45C on 1st GPU and 38C on the 2nd GPU when playing games / benchmarking. I can't remember the resolution but I believe it was 2560x1440, but unlimited FPS so it was pushed to the limit.

 

When I limit the FPS to 165Hz the 1st GPU is 42C max and 2nd one is max 36-37C. Although bubbles were still in the loop so later on the temps maximised and they were about 41c on 1st card and 47c on bottom card.

 

Fans are at around 900-1000 RPM.

 

I'll sort the thread out and update once PC looks nice and tidy.

 

Now running 9900K at 5.3Ghz, 2080 TI SLI at 2145Mhz OC on each and +1000 to memory, Z390 Aorus Master etc. 

 

I then bought Dark Hero with 5950X but I hated it so much I sold it 2 weeks later on Facebook Marketplace.

 

With the help of @For Science! I managed to improve the temps and consistency of temperatures by changing the loop order from serial to parallel and changing the flow direction to hit GPUs 1st instead of CPU.

 

Then, when temps were about 41C on top card and 40c on the bottom card while running it at 5K (not overclocked). (Overclocked temps were more like 45c top and 47c bottom).

 

I wanted to push it to the limit of my case capacity and installed 2nd pump and 4th last rad from EK.

 

That dropped the temps from 41-40C to 34C-36C. I haven't tested it yet but I believe OC results will be in low low 40s.

 

I listed OC results in my signature of what the system is capable of, but OCing sees 0 improvements in games so I'm running stock until OC makes sense and gives me some extra FPS.

It won't be on top, meh. Kinda pointless. Just happy with my frame rates now to be fair!

i9 9900K at 5.3 and two RTX 2080Ti won't be in the top list? What kind of hardware is in the top then?!

Update:

Bought 3x Acer Predator X34P monitors. (2 used, 1 new).

Using them in Nvidia Surround at 10320x1440 at 120Hz G-Synced.

 

I also upgraded my storage by removing one 2TB HDD and sticking in Samsung EVO 860 4TB SSD along with 2x Samsung 970 Plus 1TB NVMes.

Update:

Removed my 2TB drive to accommodate cables for PSU.

 

Bought another Revo D5 pump and EK CoolStream 240mm XE rad.

 

Bought HDD reader and a longer USB 3.0 cable along with surge protected and insured extension load to accommodate it.

 

Temperatures dropped by about 5C.

 

By mounting SSDs on the bottom, temperatures dropped by 10c. Double sided foam pads are great. SSDs are now under direct 200mm fan airflow. 27C on each and 37C on each NVMe.

It is because it dropped 5c. There is a huge gap between the panel and the top fans are sucking the air up.

 

No overclock because it gives me nothing now. I get same FPS as I would with an overclock.

Temps with an overclock were like 45c on the GPUs before or so. It will be less now. Without oc before it was 39c on 1st GPU.

I mean, you shown yourself that the overclocked temperatures were 40 degrees ish. So if you had a 5 degree improvement over this, you should be at 35 degrees when overclocked, but those are the temperatures you are seeing now at stock. So...

Heaven 4 reports clocks wrong. My OC is 2130-2145. Also, GPUs were in serial not parallel. Also, incorrect loop order.

This picture was taken in climate controlled room with AC blowing 19c on the PC while loop wasn't drained from bubbles. This is a build log mate, things change.

I mean that's fine, so you were getting 40 degrees with 2145 MHz with a loop with air in it but essentially running with a chiller in front of it, and now you are 35 degrees at 1980 MHz (perhaps with air in it, but not in aircon conditions...?). So really the before and after temps are non-comparable.

 

I appreciate sometimes people feel the need to make their cooling sound the most impressive but it would probably benefit the community if we were more honest about the extra cooling, so that the numbers actually mean something apart from just being a general flex. Otherwise you end up in this kind of situation where numbers before/after are hardly comparable and you don't really know whether you've really gained anything or not.

 

Anyway, as long as you are satisfied with your loop, that's all that matters. I was just pointing out some inconsistencies for others that may stumble upon this and get some unrealistic expectations.

They will never be comparable because things were ran in different conditions. 

 

Before I added the 240mm rad, Witcher 3 saw temps of 39c to 40c on top card and 37-38c on the bottom one. In the same room and same place. Previously it was like 41-47c? I can't remember clearly but it was above 40C with 3x rads and serial.

 

It can also get better due to air still being in the loop. I can still crank pump speeds too. They both run at 2200 RPM or so.

 

I wasn't getting 40c with 2145Mhz. I was getting that at stock. I said Heaven reports it incorrectly. With overclock it was showing something ridiculous like 2345 or so. Couldn't post pictures I didn't have OC pics because I haven't tried it with OC there and then. It was a first benchmark 10 min after loop was built. EDIT: I believe I came back home and temps across were 5C higher overall. Also, the massive difference between GPU temps due to serial config.

 

Then I changed the loop to parallel, and that helped with the temps (I also added fresh coolant at the same time 2L).

 

Then I added the rad and another pump and that helped with temps further.

 

Ambient temp was always different because this is England. Right now it's like 26C in my room.

 

Also, they should have no expectations. I doubt anyone will go this hard.

 

Also look how old that post is. It says 165hz in there. I don't have that monitor for months now. Like I said different conditions.

 

I simply say what temps I get at the time.
