How far will 2gb data go in these circumstances

iLostMyXbox21

So i was planning on getting an unlimited talk text and data plan, but it has 2gb fast data then slows down.. how far will that 2gb in these circumstances

actually only this one circumstance:

1hour on the bus to school

20 minutes on bus to home

Every day, occasionally in the car or outside

main usage is discord, no voice chat, no videos, simply responding to messages and talkingto friends.

not on discord the whole time, just enough time to respond to people, read some messages in the chat, and then I’d get off for like 5-10 minutes until I get another notification

will I use up all 2gb quickly? Or will it last 3/4 month? Longer!

Most would end up going to images in that case, and I think it should be definitely more than enough.  It's also worth noting that for your usecase, even the slowed down data should be perfectly usable.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

I believe you can disable automatic image previews in Discord, so you should be able to reduce data usage dramatically that way.

Edit: you can on the iOS app and the desktop application, and I believe you can on the Android app too

Oh so I don’t have to worry then? Sounds good, but is there an option to disable the images? I’d rather not blow off more data than necessary when I could be using it for other things like 144p YouTube music

with minimum image , I guess 500mb for 3 months?

Only 500 for 3? So that would be about 166mb a month?

not bad, I’ll be n wifi most of the time or talking to my friends in the real world, I just need it because I own a server so I need to be as active as possible

Have you considered YouTube Red? I got it years ago and haven't looked back. Allows you to just steam audio with your phone screen off or while using another app. You can also download full quality videos to view later. No ads either.

Its more on the mental side & self controlling.

once you need to actively recharge data, you will forbid most usage

Frankly, you'll be using around 5MB of data per song to begin with on YouTube even at 360p, assuming that the songs you're listening to are about as long as this.

D34sW.png

The m4a audio track (format code 140) and the 360p video track (if you're on Android and it supports VP9, 243 or if it doesn't, 134) will be using around 5MB of data, less or more obviously depending on the song.

Yeah I think I’ll just download the songs when I get home when I get the data (if I do) cause I have an 8gb sd card so I can download my music to that

2 gigs? Where are you from, Antarctica?

Should be fine just for chatting, nothing else, restrict data usage and all that. Download whatever you need before and get one of these USB C to USB A USB sticks to carry your media.

Anyhow, even if you get throttled after 2 gigs, you can still text pretty normally (looking back on the time I had three gigs back in 2012).

Sorry I'm so harsh on that limitation, it's not about you, just means your phone providers are bending you over a barrel and that angers me

Those are price per month? I have 50mbps 4G with unlimited data for 26,90€/month.

If you only use it for chatting it should be enough. I usually use 256mb to 1gb or more per day but I also browse the internet. I don't watch much videos on my phone.

Yeah I use ads to support the creator, I watch the ads (unless they are over a minute long then I skip it)

and can Firefox play it in the background? Although I’ll probably use spotify for music

Yeah it does, if you pick the right mode (there's 4 different combos of using the desktop or mobile site, and requesting the desktop site or not and each of them functions a bit differently lmao).  It was always hilarious that they tried to sell background playback as a feature... Like literally sell it, as in charge money for it.

And you can save videos too, again if you are in the right mode.  Haven't tried to check which quality it is but I would imagine it's whatever one is playing at the time.

Definitely, especially with sites like spotify that do it free

plus, why do they sell (for money) the ability to do it, but ONLY on mobile? You can do it free on pc

Well considering if I do anything on youtube it will probably be looking up a song my friends show me or listening to a song of mine, which in that case I can just download it to my sd card

I suggest trying Youtube Vanced. Has background play, PiP and even a dark mode. Basically what youtube used to be like before they decided to strip features then make you pay to get them again.
