Budget Deep Learning Workstation for $2500

Hi folks,

 

I want to build a workstation this week primarily used for deep learning and machine learning as a workstation and I'll connect to it using SSH. Also, will be nice to have a nice gaming compatibility but that is secondary.

 

My budget is $2500 (pre-tax), CA and I'm going to use one IPS 4k monitor w/o 144 Hz and G-Sync (will be too high). I'll share use monitor with my laptop so 4K and IPS is a must-have as I'll spend most of my time staring at text/code.

 

Here is what I built and, my concerns:

* cooler, is it enough for slightly overclocked CPU?

* will the case obstruct airflow and make GPU and CPU throttle (the machine will work 24/7)

* I added only one stick of 16GB as I probably will upgrade to 32GB in the nearest future

* my main focus here is GPU

P.S. I also looked in another topic where similar build with i9 and 2080TI costs $2100. Do PC parts become more expensive these months or I'm doing something wrong here?

Quick question what are you training or doing? As you could use $2500 over the course of awhile to train on AWS or other servers that are much faster. So for $12/hr you can use 16 V100s which will train in a fraction of the time. But that is unless you are doing things more specific

You might consider using an i7-8700 on an H370 motherboard. The performance would be quite close to that of a stock i7-8700K. If you need more cpu power, then go with an i7-9700K or i9-9900K.

 

A better cpu cooler is required for Coffee Lake/Refresh K cpu.

 

Using a single channel memory kit (1 stick) sacrifices 3% - 5% performance. I'd suggest going with 2x8GB or 2x16GB.

I'm aware of AWS, GCP, and other cloud solutions. The problem with them that I'm constantly changing the model and retraining, having nice GPU which will execute everything fast has a very big impact on my performance. You'll need 12 x V100 if you sure that everything works great and you are trying to scale your model (which I probably won't do because I'm working on research topics, not production ready models).

 

For my day to day work, even if I use AWS with spot servers (without considering their limitations) where the price for K80 is ~$0.20 - $1 is expensive if you consider that I'm going to use the machine for 3-4 years.

So, the price dropped by $20 but only RAM is faster now and CPU has lower max clocks. Is the cooler you listed will the handle K series?

Includes 32GB of memory. CPU clocks are roughly 100 MHz lower than the K variant. All ssd storage for improved performance.

 

Yes, the cpu cooler will handle a K version. But if you want a decent overclock you should be looking at a Dark Rock Pro 4 or NH-D15.

 

Note, the motherboard will not allow (easy) overclocking of a K cpu.
