2133 MHz too slow for ryzen?

So you are saying its a bottleneck?  If that's your definition of a bottleneck than you must upgrade with this in mind "In Today, Outdated Tomorrow"

 

There is breathing room to be gained, mostly in synthetic benchmarks.  Unless there have been an overhaul since I last tested, it wasn't some SERIOUS OMG THE GAINZ BRO when I tested it...or my not poor ass would have swapped to 3000+ MHz because Im a gamer and my Ryzen rig is pushing an Acer pred 144hz monitor...wasn't enough gained there to care. 

 

But as others have stated in this thread - this topic sucks cause everyones an expert (sans those who own the equipment)

How about this, next paycheck Im going to buy a kit of 3200mhz if I can find one on sale for under $100, and will (given I can do the purchase without my wife killing me) do some more testing.

Currently 2x8gb Crucial Ballistix at 3200 (which are pretty nice!) are less than $100 USD. I'd say prices are good! 2933-3000 RAM is about $80 right now as well!

I have 8x2 2400mhz kit, I upgraded to a 8x2 2600 kit and boy was it a huge difference

Yeah personally i have seen a massive performance gain switching from DDR4 2400 to DDR4 3000.

Add in XMP and my system flies like a rocket in gaming.

Also yes to dual channel, AMD's infinity fabric really needs it even more so than faster RAM.

My tests were ran in 2017 or like January 2018 so things could have changed for optimization.  But what is a huge difference?  Did you increase Frames Per Second by an equitable percentage?  If so what was that percentage.  When I ran my tests, across my Steam library it was 3-5% gains.

Please equate out what you guys are seeing - a 3-5% gain is marginal.  A 10-15% gain is wow.  A 20% gain is incredible.  If you are saying 30% (I would call that a HUGE DIFFERENCE) than we are talking about an astronomical increase in performance per $100 invested in a PC.

 

My use case showed 3-5% increase in frames across all the titles tested, I don't have my numbers because I didn't plan on defending them (and we should all go off our laurels of, we should be telling the truth).

 

What actual gains are you getting now over previous average FPS sessions.

Well in my case its like a 20% increase, before I was hitting 60-80 Frames for almost all my games

With my ram kit upgrade those numbers went up considerably, at lowest in games like rise of the tomb raider i hit 75FPS while before it was in the 50's.

Then with a few bios updates and XMP enabled those numbers stuck and are now very stable.

Even a unoptimized game like arkham knight can now hit 75 FPS+ on average never dipping below 60.

Before it topped off at 60 frames even with me enabling 90FPS in game.

Well to be clear, if you're looking for RAM currently, would you argue that 3-5% is well worth a $15-20 cost increase if 10% increases are valued at $100?

 

You're speaking of the merit of buying ALL NEW RAM just to get a 3-5% improvement. Which I agree, is a waste of that money.

 

The OP didn't specify the capacity of the RAM he's got.

  • If it's a 4GB single channel at 2133mhz, it may be time for a whole new RAM configuration. (I'd argue it's going to be worth it. 16GB dual channel 3000-3200 is around $80-100 currently.)
  • If he's running 8GB single channel, then an additional stick at 2133mhz to match could potentially only cost $40-45ish. So at that point, a whole new RAM setup may not be worth the money. (It may still. If the cost for the addl 8GB is $45, for only $50 more, he could have the 16GB dual channel setup at 3200mhz.) 

I think either way, the cost to performance isn't quite 10% for $100, but an upgrade or increase needs to be made one way or another, be it a move to dual channel only or an overhaul to faster and dual channel in one.

Yeah from my perspective this a good boost and it seems lime AMD's fine wine approach may also work for their CPU's and GPU's.

As game revisions happen, driver and BIOS revisions come AMD's Ryzen is looking to be the platform AMD fans have always wanted.

I am no AMD fanboy but I cannot help but gush how happy I am with my system, i got my Ryzen 7 1700 shortly after its launch so i have been with the platform when it was brand new and I have seen first hand where gains have happened.

Even when I was stuck at DDR4 2400 thanks to ram prices going insane I still saw some major gains.

The jump to both a 1070TI and DDR4 3000 has made my machine a sleeping beast that has finally awoken.

Granted yes the Ryzen 7 1700 isn't the best at games compared to its intel counterparts but its certainly proven its value for me

Fantastic chip.  I honestly have almost just built my next rig on the around the same chip.  It is just bad ass (and only $146 new on EBAY right now).

 

I need to go ahead and just bite the bullet and get the ram next pay period when my wife gives me my allowance from my own income and get the 3000 or 3200.  I put an R9 Fury in it recently and that (GPU prices were just so LOL when ram was just so LOL) breathed some good life in it, but I feel it could do more.  Maybe this is where it needs to come from.

OP already has the RAM - that's the only reason I would say it wouldn't be worth replacing.

 

In CAPS (I think) in another post in this thread I put - if system building, then yes of course get the higher MHz ram always.

 

IIRC he said its single channel 8gb stick in another post.

 

Yes I agree he would notice better, cheaper gains buying another for dual channel - but can agree it may be worth scrapping completely since hes likely only $50 bucks in.

Fantastic chip.  I honestly have almost just built my next rig on the around the same chip.  It is just bad ass (and only $146 new on EBAY right now).

 

I need to go ahead and just bite the bullet and get the ram next pay period when my wife gives me my allowance from my own income and get the 3000 or 3200.  I put an R9 Fury in it recently and that (GPU prices were just so LOL when ram was just so LOL) breathed some good life in it, but I feel it could do more.  Maybe this is where it needs to come from.

OP already has the RAM - that's the only reason I would say it wouldn't be worth replacing.

 

In CAPS (I think) in another post in this thread I put - if system building, then yes of course get the higher MHz ram always.

 

IIRC he said its single channel 8gb stick in another post.

 

Yes I agree he would notice better, cheaper gains buying another for dual channel - but can agree it may be worth scrapping completely since hes likely only $50 bucks in.

I say DDR4 3000 is a good match and is typically a bit cheaper than DDR4 3200.

Either way if your motherboard will take it its worth it at least in my experience.

i'm running a r5 2600 too and i just would like to tell you that you need to do yourself a favour and try atleast 32 gb's of ram... 
also according to factory stats a r5 2600 max memory hertz is 3 ghz for memory. Intelligence suggests to stay away from the maximum … so uhm 2600 for the 2600 and oke atleast 16 gb's ;)

I got around to watching those videos posted, and in many cases the average was pretty close to 10% if not in the 15%+.

Obviously each game is optimized differently and uses components differently, so not all showed the same, but in a lot of the big titles, the change was fairly significant.

The youtuber did state he didn't have 3200mhz so he was overclocking his 3000mhz kit to attain that. I'm not sure what that says (if anything) about reliability.

Yea anything after 3000 actually increases the timings making performance worse

Will do!  Im usually too little butter spread over to much bread so it may take me a week to get to this after I receive the RAM

Did a lot of research on reddit prior to going with the V-color (cause brand, Taiwan just emerging in the states basically) but they have great reviews on reddit for compatibility at 3200mhz, figured if I was going to jump in Im going balls deep, can always down clock lol
