HP is officially announcing the next-generation of its Windows VR headset line: the HP Reverb. The HP Reverb releases in April and costs $599 for the consumer edition and comes with two Windows VR controllers. The commercial edition of the headset costs and includes a longer warranty, a leather face cushion for quick wipe downs, and an optional short cable for use with backpack PCs. HP invited me to their Palo Alto, CA office a few weeks ago to try it out.

This PC VR headset has a 2160 x 2160 per eye resolution (making it a 4K headset at 4320 x 2160 combined) with dual 2.89″ LCD panels and Fresnel-Aspherical lenses. It’s got a 114-degree field of view and uses the same two-front-facing-cameras for tracking that you can find in other existing Windows VR devices.

 

For a mostly a Visual experience this seems to be the best so far, having 2160x2160 per eye at a 114 FOV is going to be amazing. The strap looks very comfortable on this model. I feel for simple VR games (VR chat), 3D/VR video, or work applications this seems to be the best on the market IMO.

 

The only issues I see with this is the tracking, AFAIK, has not been updated so it will be the worst in that category and people say the WMR controllers have the functionality but need a better agronomic fit.

 

I am still waiting on more info on the Vive cosmos and where the improvements on its inside out tracking help keep the tracking the same or better then the existing Vive's outside in tracking.

Its getting a lot of good reviews on most tech sites, I'm quite intrigued now.

ya the pixel density makes it great for virtual desktop work, and 3D/VR Video playback.

 

Just wish the tracking was improved, that is the only major issue with all WMR VR headsets.

Nice, but it dosnt really get at a large problem with VR, it costs as much for a good headset as a graphics card that can run it

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

This is what the Oculus S or whatever it was called should of been. I am happy to pay an extra $200 for higher refresh rate, larger FOV, included headphones, higher resolution, not tied to facebook, and better headstrap. Imma buy this if tracking isn't doo doo

This should be the best HMD for cockpit games unless Pimax gets their issues sorted out but then your picking between the extra resolution of the HP and the better FOV and Tracking of the Pimax.

 

I will probably get one of the HPs to test with DCS World as even with the Pimax 5K+ the resolutions isn't quite enough to read all of the text on the displays. Hard to say if the extra resolution would be preferable over the extra FOV for flying/racing games.
