The Samsung Galaxy Fold has done a great job at looking sleek and slender (despite the awful notch in tablet mode). However, it seems like it was all smoke and mirrors, which I guess shouldn't be too surprising. A new video shows that the phone actually has a crease in it like all the other foldable displays. They avoided showing this in their original presentations by keeping the phone in a display box with the lights angled perfectly inside. But now with a hands-on look, we can see the reality of the display.

It seems likely this could be a genuine Galaxy Fold unit in the video, especially this close to the release date, which is scheduled for April 26, 2019 in the US and Canada, and May 3, 2019 in the UK.

 

Foldable displays are always going to have a crease – the clue is in the name. However, this is the first time that we've had an unfettered look at the fold that runs down the centre of the 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display. It's unclear whether this will be noticeable when you're using the device or watching a movie on the pliable screen.

 

 

I personally was hoping that Samsung would be the ones to market the phone without a crease in it. However, I wasn't expecting much. A foldable display that's meant to be folded most of the time is always going to have a crease, at least for now. Although, I gotta say that this crease looks way better than most of the other foldable phones that are being shown. I think in 2-3 years we'll see some seamless displays coming out. The first versions of electronics very rarely hit the mark the first time. What do you think?

I'm not surprised, and honestly, still impressed with what they've managed to do. Like all things, it'll get better with time, and as new manufacturing and material breakthroughs come about.

Why do you want one? Rectangles found out into squares and squares are terrible for content consumption....and it’s it’s highly unlikely someone wouldn’t just buy an iPad Mini and do the same stuff only wayyyy cheaper.

I'm not sure how well an 8x5 inch device fits in my pockets and how easily I can sit down with it in my pockets. I already prefer phablets but gaining pocket space and flexibility while keeping the same screen size or larger would be nice.

This is why bags exist. Most people carry bags of some sort everywhere.

I think that us a huge assumption. I know alot of people that dont bring anything more than what is in their pockets and maybe a hat with then 90% of the time. You probably won't see that as often for women but that is partly because most have a purse with them and women's clothes don't have usable pockets tbh.

I would very much appreciate a folding phone. Let me have practical portability with the option for that same portable device to be convertible into a tablet.

 

I only carry a bag to/from work; otherwise I don't. But even with a bag, it's a hell of a lot more convenient to reach into my pocket and grab a tablet than it is for me to go into my bag.

 

I'm not too interested in foldable phones in their current (first gen) form, but with a bit of maturity, I'd very likely buy one.

This is a big haha to all the people on the forum that were continuously telling me there would be no fold. Side note I would love a folding phone @DrMacintosh . You can get double the battery size and sure you can buy an iPad mini but I can't put that in my pocket and that's another devices to charge, carry, and sync all your info to. A folding phone, if the screen is glass and lasts 5 years is what I would buy. I wanna see Apple try it

"Never" is a really long time.  I'd rather have a good conventional design than hold on to an old phone out of stubbornness.

 

That and, let's face it, you're not going to get a Galaxy Fold-style device with a lower price and refined technology for a while, if ever.

It's down to opinion really. I personally dislike the idea of a folding phone, but there are plenty of people out there who would want one.

IMO it's an awkward, expensive and uncomfortable design that I just couldn't use, not to mention the fact that it's a design ahead of its time.

Everyone goes on about their day.  While your logic about people using bags is left on the street, battered and bruised.

 

Most people don't use bags.  Look around when you are out and about.  Not many bags, and no purses do not count.  They're not for tablets.

I do, i want to fold an 8 inch tablet into something i can easily have in my pocket and use, either with a single or double fold. Then i wouldn't need a tablet and a phone and could just have one device. I almost only watch videos on my phone so i find the 5.something inch screen in my G6 a little small at times

As far as I'm concerned, phone hardware improvements haven't provided much consumer benefit in several years, unless you use your phone for demanding games. If you're not a gamer, the small, iterative improvements occurring over time right now aren't doing nearly enough to convince me to upgrade. Frankly, this is true of laptop and desktop computers as well. I got the Galaxy S4 right after it came out, and used it until I got the Axon M 13 months ago. If the Axon M hadn't come out, I would probably still be happily using my Galaxy S4, because I feel like all the new iPhones, Galaxies, and so forth don't give me a significant impetus to upgrade. Until 5G is mature, I will happily keep my Axon M, so definitely for at least another year, more realistically two or three years. Maybe even longer, as long as the phone still functions. I see enough excitement around folding devices that I'm confident there will be good successor options in the coming years, though inevitably they won't have headphone jacks, and I'm not excited for wireless earphones, as that's yet another device to charge (which is another reason I don't want a phone+tablet setup).

I say bring that thickness, I'll take function over fashion any day. Look at all the people who hulk out their phones with battery cases.

Preach! I would love a phone that unfolded to something the size of an iPad mini, though they'll need to figure out multiple folds to pull it off, and who knows how many generations away that is from being reasonable. 

 

To be clear for my specific use case, price is not the biggest factor. As much time as I spend using my phone, I would gladly pay $2,000 for a worthy product. Luckily, in the event a replacement is needed, that Axon M is down to $200 on Amazon in the USA.
