Motherboard Tier List (EOL)

I'm sorry to sound dumb, but what exactly do the amp measurements mean? I can't find anything on it but it seems your list is based off it.

Asus: X470 Strix-I, B450 Strix-I, X370 Prime Pro

Asrock: X570 Extreme4, Steel Legend, Pro4 (ATX & mATX), Phantom K4

Sorry if I'm missing something, I'm new here, but is the Phantom K4 supposed the Phantom Gaming 4? As far as I can tell, there is no Asrock Phantom K4 board, and I know that the Asrock Pro4 models have basically the same VRMs as the Phantom Gaming 4.

Yes, a typo because it was called the K4 on older chipsets

Tomahawk has slightly better heatsink, no difference for overclocking otherwise

Hey guys, long time lurker here. Im starting to gather the components to build my first AMD pc and this site has been of great help.

I´m planning to build around a third gen ryzen, later on i'll figure out if I get the 3600 or if maybe I should wait a bit more and buy a 3700x

And so, I was wondering if the ASUS TUF Gaming X570-Plus is any good, it's on amazon for about 165$ and although I don't wanna cheap out on the mobo, that's about how much I want to spent for this particular component.

Also, any recommendations that are in the same price range would be greatly appreciated!

it is a good board, but you're probably using so little of it, a good B450 board could already do what you want.

oh ok, I had that especific mobo in mind because i want this particular PC to last a long time. You know, having a great fundation to upgrade in the future and stuff.

if it's not much to ask, what <160$ mobo do you recommend? Should I go for a X470 mobo like an ASUS Prime X470-Pro or a MSI X470 Gaming PRO Carbon? Any great B450 option?

the question comes to whether you'll upgrade to a Ryzen 9 in the future or you just stay with your first CPU on this platform for so long, it's time to move onto a new platform anyway when you upgrade the CPU again.

If you use 3rd gen CPU then unless you can solve the BIOS update issue (AMD's bootkit/repair store/have old CPU on hand already/can borrow an old CPU etc), only top X470 boards are viable like the Asus Crosshair VII Hero, which although brings better connectivity and overclocking capability than the TUF, is also more expensive. If BIOS update isnt an issue, the MSI X470 Carbon, Asus X470-F and Asrock X470 Taichi are good options too.

B450 boards have better priced options like the B450 Tomahawk, since MSI B450 ATX boards can all flash their BIOS for 3rd gen compatiblity (not needed for MAX series). However while they can support the power draw of 3700X rather easily, their connectivity is on the basic side (4x SATA only if you use the M.2 slot). I know MSI also makes MAX boards for the X470 Gaming Pro and Gaming Plus (so they go by names like the Gaming Plus Max), but their feature set is largely unchanged from B450 boards sharing the same name (without CPU-free BIOS flashing capability) so I consider them "the same"

I'm going for an ITX 3700x build, hopefully to overclock to a certain extent. I'm primarily debating between the X570I Strix vs Aorus and over here in Canada the Strix costs $30 more. Though the Strix is higher on the tier list, is it worth $30 for the better VRM/(other features?) ?

not really unless you plan on getting more cores in the case that can give the CPU ATX case level of cooling

Hello Everyone,

I have a friend looking to make a budget build for Christmas and I'm helping him build it. I am steering him towards a B450 motherboard with integrated wifi. Cheaper is better but I don't want him to get a garbage board either. Are there some serious dumpster fires I need to stay away from?

No interest in overclocking, 1080p gaming, will probably combo with an R5 2600 and a  GTX1650 Super.

I'm eyeing the ASRock B450M/AC Micro ATX for around $75. The next board is about $120. Our budge is $800 including peripherals. He is starting with nothing.

First build, nothing to see here...

CPU: Ryzen 5 2600  MOBO: Gigabyte Aorus B450 Pro Wifi  RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory STORAGE: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB + Crucial MX500 500GB

GRAPHICS: XFX Radeon RX 580 8 GB GTS Black Edition OC+ CASE: Phanteks Eclipse P400S POWER: SeaSonic EVO Edition 620 W Bronze Fully Modular

I would go for a quality board with value that doesn't have wifi (so you're not forced to go mATX or ITX) and put a $20 wifi card in it.  Then you can pick a board on other merits.  This is a good value: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/pBWfrH/msi-b450-a-pro-atx-am4-motherboard-b450-a-pro

Since wifi is a requirement in his current situation, do you have a recommendation for a solid wifi adapter? I assume that pcie would be best but.... idk

Does this Bundle with the AMD 3700x and ROG Strix B450-F Mobo fit the requirements? B450F is listed in the Tier E category, however I don't see any further information or what variants are the best outcome?
