how well they've come along in the memory overclocking department

well... still not that good compared to compatitiors, especially the gt8 had problems with going above 3000 mhz. so if you're doing it for memory oc, i'd get something else

I have seen it doing 3200MHz CL14 with 4 4gb sticks with a 2600X, which is awful compared to say, a mid range B450 board from Asus Asrock or MSI. Not optimisitc in any way even with Zen 2's memory controller

I see, thanks for the heads up then, I'll probably just spend the extra $30 for the taichi then, has the bios improved at all for that at least?

just $30 extra for a Taichi? Then I honestly see zero reason to get Biostar.

I know some people dont like the bios, but I'm fine with Asrock :D You can even say I'm a bit of an Asrock fanboy, though I hate them cutting away features from existing names, adding them back with new names and sell them at a higher price. I am a bit skeptical though since they haven't put out a zen 2 bios yet, my whole plan is to get a high end x370 board and make a new zen 2 build around it since high end x370 boards can be had for cheap.

Well, the older bios revisions used to be a huge pain to overclock on with constant memory training problems, and I'm planning on getting zen 2 and a kit of CJR, so I need that to be a non issue when I get a new board.

how cheap? Just curious, it is possible that B550 can dip in price with PCIe 4.0 cut off.

$160 for a taichi, $130 for a strix, $130 for a GT7, prices around that for a fair bit of older high end boards.

X370-F? Great deal on that if it is the case, at least none of the memory overclocking issue. Being 6 phase of 60A powerstages do mean 12 core could be limited in its overclocking, let alone the 16 core though the CPU could be hard to cool at that point anyway

Only reason I don't want to go for the strix is due to the t-topology, otherwise the vrm output is about the same as the taichi, just harder to cool.

Taichi has higher output potential, being 12 phase 40A.

also maybe X470 will get cheap when X570 and B550 come, maybe new boards overclock better than even X470, can only wait and see.

I highly doubt that x570 will really be worth it for my use case since I'm just going to be using an 8 core and 16gb of good ram, the memory controller is the is main limiter on current ryzen anyhow.

that's why I also mention B550. There just isn't enough information to judge all of them correctly.

I'd much rather get a high end x370 board over a b550 just due to high end x370 being perfect for this kind of release, I'll probably get in touch with an Asrock rep and ask about bios updates to their high end lineup.

the thing with B550 is that with X570 base models (i.e. the "chipset-swap" B550) start at $150, and those already start with something like a 6 phase while using 6 layer PCB for PCIe 4.0. I speculate that some of the more high end B550 might just carry over what the cheaper X570 has, which means inherenting their memory OC capability

I would just rather go with the 12 phase that the taichi is using over an entry level 6 phase, it seems that Asrock are going to be support most b350 and x370 boards along with their 400 series, and obviously the taichi will be on that list. I wonder how far amd was able to push memory clocks for zen 2 cause I want to get at least 3733 cl 16 on a kit of CJR if possible.

hi, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good board.

I v read all the comments and took a good look at the tier list and spreadsheet but I still cant decide whats best in my case.

I m running a 1700 at base core + 2x8gb trident kit 3200 CL14 on my msi b350 tomahawk. Never was I able to go full 3200mhz on my RAM, max was 2400 but only briefly. I almost tried every bios the board had to offer but it became worse im now at 2133. Besides the ram issues the board had many more problems and msi support did not help at all.

I m now unsure what to do I was thinking of replacing it since fall 2018. I m quite happy with my 1700 and wont upgrade anytime soon.

I have a limited budget of around 100 +/- 20. I v read how good the msi b420 boards are but my trust in msi is quite gone to be honest. Is there anything besides the msi boards in that price range that could run my ram and give me some oc space for my ryzen?

question before i do: have you updated the bios and chipset in any time? there used to be some memory problems on first gen, that got patched out

I dont know the exact BIOS I m currently using but it must be either 7A34v1K or 7A34v1L (late 2018/early 2019); I updated in order to see if its possible to get  above 2133 but it never worked no matter if I use xmp profiles or manually. I updated the chipset to the latest available in january.

hm... just try it first... if that doesn't work i can help with picking a different one

except if you want to do that right now

and btw, b350 and x370 msi's were quite rushed, the b450/x470/x570's are so much better and they even have the (imo) best motherboard on x399

There is only one BIOS left to try I wont bother I think; the chance it will suddenly work is slim I believe.

I v heard only good things about the b450's and x470's from MSI and I wont rule them out completely just because one board was garbage

would be neat if u could recommend one that fits what I need it for besides the msi b450 tomahawk/mortar btw. how much difference in performance and vram is between tier a and b? is it signifcant

for some, no, for some yes

if you want a good budget board, the pro4(m)(-f) are really good as a example
