What's with the trend of 'ditching bezels'

This is something I've been wondering for a while now; what's with the trend of ditching bezels? Did I miss a memo or something because I really don't care how thin the bezels are on a display as long as it meets my requirements for what I want out of said display. I at one point had 2 Dell 3008WFP monitors (now just 1 and a CRT), which you may remember having thick bezels by today's standard, but they had decent colour accuracy for the size and resolution I was after... The bezels between 2 displays didn't bother me. Obviously I feel very similar about laptops, tablets, and phones.

 

So can someone explain to me why bezels have become such a big deal in the past few years?

because people want more screen with smaller physical size i guess

On mobile devices (laptops, tablets, phones, etc.): it's about having more screen per physical size (a phone with a 5" screen and a phone with a 6" screen can be the same physical size, but the one with the bigger screen in the same size will be more impressive).

 

On other displays (TV's, monitors): It's also kind of about taking up less room for the same screen size. For displays meant to be used with other displays (e.g. multi monitor displays) it's also about having less bezel, which is dead room between your monitors. The less bezels you have, the more seamless it becomes.

 

It's also an easy thing to advertise

For me it's mostly about multi monitor setups, having less dead space between the screens is kinda sexy

Agreed. That's where it makes the most difference, on the desktop anyway. 

 

Don't get me started on the "thin bezel" lies monitor manufacturers do... well, not strictly a lie but misinformation. Once they get the border thin, they instead have a large dead area on the edge so that is still to me an effective bezel.

My Acer monitor annoys me with this, the actual bezel is only about 2mm around the top and sides but then the black 'border' within the screen is another 5mm or so

Lol yeah...when i was looking for a monitor it looks like the Bezel is so thin but when the monitor lights up there's another 2CM of black border around it lol the monitor was LG 22MP68VQ ...i was like WTF?
