How would you guys go about this Virtualbox project? (VM virgin btw)

Basic Idea

  1. Get a AMD FX based PC and put lots of smaller HDD's and SDD's in it
  2. Use Virtualbox, to run multiple distributions of Linux (Mint, Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu), Windows 8.1, Windows 7, and Windows 10
  3. Windows 10 VM would be a type 1 VM

What would you use as the base OS, windows or linux?

i7 6700k, GTX 1080, Crucial MX 300, Maximus VII Hero, WD Blue, 16 GB RAM

Which is better of the two OS's Proxmox or esxi, in your opinion?

This should work fine.

Better way to go about it is xeon workstations with a windows or freeBSD/Linux hypervisor (HyperV from microsoft, UnRAID, ESXi, ProxMox, etc.) 

I personally use Freenas, but don't recommend it (LONG List of reasons, working on switching to UnRAID or Prox) since it uses Bhyve for VM integration and requires a lot more permission modding, plus windows VMs are limited to 2 cores, so that sucks. 

If you want to build something similar to what I have, (2x 6 core xeon, 32 GB ddr3 ECC, 2x4TB hard drives, 4x128GB SSDs, Quadro 4000, etc.) I bought a Dell Precision T5600 off of ebay and upgraded it. Totaling about $550-600

Is going with xeons a better bet if its more for general computing and gaming?

No. Honestly for what you want to do you should have 2 seperate computers.

Games like less cores more speed, Server applications like more cores and don't care about speed. 

What are you planning on Using these VMs for? That will determine what I recommend.

Linux ones (for general computing, to get familiar with the terminal prompts and Steam Play/Proton, and to find a distro I enjoy,)

Windows 10 (gaming, UE 4, Blender)

Windows 8/7 (Blender and UE 4, backwards compatibility with older games)
