Unacceptable IPS Glow?

BadDude

I ordered Acer Predator XB273K from Newegg and after testing for ips glow, I think it is beyond shit. I even notice a slight mudded screen around the corners when watching movies, especially at top left.

I know the glow comes with the ips technology, but would this considered too much? Thus, considered as defective product and eligible for full refund?

Below is my display at 0%, 50%, and 100% brightness respectively at about 70 cm away from my monitor. Obviously, in real life the glow isn't as bad as in the photos since my phone camera is exaggerating a bit, but it's still pretty bad.

The left top corner looks a bit bad... I think you're on the line between RMA-able and not.

Just a bit? How about other corners?

This looks to be typical ghosting that most monitors have. If it distorts color/blacks most companies will allow RMA. When I used to send in named brands for a Company some brands where nicer than others. Acer from what I remember allowed under 10% of screen ghosting. For their higher priced monitors they could be more lenient. I would definitely check with them by chat/call. If recently purchased I would contact Newegg and get them to replace it.

That be BLB..and IPS most likely.

IPS glow is a glow affect over the entire screen when viewed from an angle, which is present on all IPS displays. it does appear more prominent at the corners mind you due to the angle of view. IMO though i would say what ur seeing is  BLB AND IPS glow, to check simply look at the screen from different angles, if the amount of light changes, its IPS glow, if it doesn't, its BLB.

Note however that the whole screen will shift anyway due to limited viewing angles.

You can also simply step back and look at it head on but from a further distance away, if it seems ot get betetr (less glow) then its most certainly IPS glow.

Are the pictures representative of what u actual see in person ? If so then definitely get it replaced.

Thats not ghosting ,, not even close. Ghosting is something entirely different

@SolarNova

O my you are 100% correct I was thinking about Backlight Bleeding. I do not know how I got those mixed up. Terminology aside the rest is the same.

Guess I was being spooked by a ghost

The actual display doesn't look as bad as in pictures. The top left corner is most noticeable, I can always see it when viewing dark contents with all lights in my room turned off. Otherwise, I don't seem to notice anything if I'm not in a dark room. I'm pretty sure these are ips glows and not BLB. So is this normal for ips displays? Or should I return and potentially get a TN? lol

If u don't notice it during an average session on the PC then there's no need to replace it. Long story short all IPS panels will have some amount of IPS glow, and most LCD monitors in general will have some amount of BLB and/or dark scene uniformity issues.

  • 4 months later...

I just got the same monitor and it suffers from the same problems. I sent the first one back and got a new one. Same problems, a bit milder though. Complained and got a third that is also wrong, with an added BLB.

The same thing, it is worst in the upper left corner, but visible in other areas too. It reaches halfway down the sceen and about 1/3 towards the right. A smaller glow in every other corner. It doesn't show in light pictures, but in dark areas it does. In black screen, or in dark areas in games, like Shadow of the Tomb Raider it was like having extra light sources in the cave.

I have used plenty of IPS monitors and never seen anything like that. Not even my old Acer 270HU which should basically be same tech, except the resolution and HDR.

The strange thing is I went to another nearby store to see their monitor on display and the picture was perfect. Although the environment was much brighter. So it seems like a problem with the model, but then not. And they said they had sold plenty of them with no returns.

So I am confused. Am I overreacting or extremely unlucky to get 3 defected ones.

Anyway leaning towards returning it and getting a refund. The store offers 50 days refunds on everything. You can even use it for 50 days and return it as long as you don't damage it.

I contacted Acer suppot with pictures, that look much like yours and they said it seems like a defect, but how I got 2 new ones and both have the same problem, I can't understand.

I would be inclined to contact the manufacturer, tell them u have already had X number from a retailer, suggest they deal with the issue and send u a pretested unit as it may be a bad batch at the retailer. (unlikely)

In the end they are still responsible for manufacturers warranty.

But dont hold ur breath, as i said, all IPS panels will suffer form IPS glow, and all LCD monitors have poor black uniformity. Its just down to how bad it will be.

But the strange thing is my old IPS that is from Acer too, has no such problems. So it doesn't seem to be a normal IPS thing. Looking at an angle the entire screen is super bright. 178 degrees viewing angles? No way!

Where it bothers most is the SOTR game I mentioned. If I enable HDR, everything dark gets really really dark. In caves it can be hard to see anything at all. Sure some details like a bonfire, looks amazing, how it throws light in the cave, especially with RT. But when there is no light close and you can't see the face of the person you are talking to in the cave camp during a dialogue, it is just ridiculous. Sure it is kinda realistic and you could get used to it, but with such darkness, the glow totally ruins it. Because the glow is brighter than the dark areas in the picture. I think dark would need to be darker for HDR to work well. Maybe those FALD models would do a better job.

I have contacted Acer support again, but they haven't bothered to reply anymore.

Going from 1440p to 4K doesn't seem worth the bleed problems and loss in FPS, when the HDR doesn't seem to work very well either.
