NEW PSU Tier List

Recommended Posts

39 minutes ago, Quadriplegic said:

My first reaction to placing of the Hydro GE was "Wut", but I have to say it makes sense – it would be somewhat ok, if price reflected the quality. Now, it costs close to the RMx/Whisper M, which is a suicide on FSP's part.

At least fan is somewhat quiet under low loads.

Suggestion – would it be possible to link some of those PSUs to the Cybenetics database? Or implement its noise ratings? You know, if there is a solid database, might as well try to use it

that's a good one... I'll take it into the group with our next update

Think of a breaker box in your house.

With a multi-rail PSU,

Basically the power delivered to your system is split up into different segments (rails). Each of these rails have their own Over Current Protection, where it will safely turn the PSU off if there's too much power going through a rail. Rarely, a multi-rail unit can cause compatibility issues. Otherwise multi-rail is preferred.

A single rail PSU will only have one segment (rail). This rail still has the over current protection (they actually use "Over Power Protection"), but it's set a much higher point.

If there's too much power going out the PSU (either caused by a short or overpowered components), it can melt, start fires, kill components, etc.

so there multi rail convinient for uncertain ammount of electricity going through your psu? you know what idk anymore

The G2 also has very high trip points and completely lacks OCP.

The EVGA G2 has OCP.

Not sure were you got that from.

Yes, because they are old, EOL and can't be obtained anymore, for example the Maxrevo:

For that, pls look at the older List.

Enermax lists the Product under discontinued, so yeah, it is EOL.

You might still be able to get NOS, but ou can also still get IBM PS/2 Computers...

And as @LukeSavenije said, you can also refer to the old list.

We didn't want to make a 10 page List that list everything that ever existed, we only wanted to concentrate on the most recent units.

Why is the FSP Hydro at Tier 3 but the System Power E9 at Tier 4? They're the exact same.

(Same for the FSP Hydro CM and System Power E9 CM, come on they even used the same suffixes)

Well maybe it has loud fan and lacks ocp :D Might be tier S otherwise.

Manufacturers put tight protections on psus that are made of questionable parts. Funny enough its still better to have 105C Japanese cartel caps without otp than 85C fuhyooouuu or Capxon with otp if you are not swapping psus before they turn 5 years old.

E9 is Aurum

FSP Hydro is something completely different.

And there are a ton of different ones as well, some are shit, some are good.

Group regulated units will not be placed above Tier D.

Tier C (Budget)

  • FSP - Aurum

Then why is FSP Aurum in tier C?

Tier C (Budget)

  • FSP - Aurum

Tier E (no buy)

  • Bitfenix - Fury

Why is BitFenix Fury two full tiers below FSP Aurum AND in the lowest possible tier, together with Diablotek, when it uses FSP Aurum inside?

Tier B (midrange)

  • Rosewill - Capstone

How did you rate the Capstone when they have no reviews yet? Or did you put the old Capstones here and aren't aware there's a new version with the same name?

If that's the second option, then it deserves explaining. First, there was a Capstone series based on Super Flower Golden Green. Then, they launched Capstone G series, based on an half-bridge + LLC + DC-DC platform from Enhance for 550-750W versions, and an ACRF Enhance platform for high power versions (more).

Then, after Capstone G, they re-launched Capstone (without G) again, this time using Andyson as an OEM. If you go to a store and search for Capstone, you get this new version, since the old-old Super Flower based one is long discontinued.

So is the Capstone in your list the Super Flower one, or the Andyson one? And if it's the Andyson one, then based on what reviews?

12 hours ago, LienusLateTips said:

Tier B (midrange)

  • Cooler Master - VSM-series =>550W

Tier C (Budget)

  • Rosewill - Capstone G

Why isn't there a distinction between the 550-750W Capstone Gs and >=850W Capstone Gs, since they use two wildly different platforms?

And why are lower-power Capstone Gs a tier below Cooler Master VSM, when they use the same internals?

12 hours ago, LienusLateTips said:

Tier E (no buy)

  • Rosewill - Hive

Earlier you mentioned you will abandon discontinued units, so why is the original Hive still here? And why is it so low? It is (was, actually) an independently regulated dual magnetic amplifier unit with okay performance and okay parts, so why put it in the lowest possible tier?

And since you put the old, discontinued, original Hive here, then where's the current Hive-S series? That one is the thing you should be advising against, since that series is much worse. (One of the worst group regulated platforms out there on the 550W-650W units). Meanwhile the 750W and higher power Hive-S units actually use the same platform as Thermaltake Smart Pro RGB, which is Tier C here.

Protection. Safety. That's all.

The EVGA G2 has OCP.

Typo. The G2's OCP and OPP are obviously set very high. It completely lacks over temperature protection.

Manufacturers put tight protections on psus that are made of questionable parts.

Oh... So only PSUs that are going to blow up have protections that prevent them from blowing up?

Its still better to have 105C Japanese cartel caps without otp than 85C fuhyooouuu or Capxon with otp if you are not swapping psus before they turn 5 years old.

If there's no OTP and the fan fails, it's not the caps that are going to fail.  It's a number of other parts.

A PSU is not just a box full of capacitors.  Astounding how many people don't realize this.

Thanks for the hard work

Some of these tiers have explanations. Others don't. For the novices maybe add them.

For example

Tier s - Money is no object. Has all the bells and whistles like power monitoring. For $3000+ systems

Tier A - excellent performance, protection and efficiency. For $1500 to $3000 systems.

Tier B - great protection and performance. For $800 to $1500 systems.

Tier C - Great budget units with great protections. For systems up to $800

Tier D - no reason to get these. You can find units in tier c for the same price or less.

Tier E - get these if you have components in your system that you hate and are trying to kill.

Tier F - (this is where diablotek belongs imho) these are great units if you are trying to make a fire insurance claim on your house without getting arrested.

Just a suggestion
