Gemini Man to be shown in 120 fps

Movies have been in 24 fps for a long time. even if the resolutions went up to 4k already, Paramount wants to make a change to that. They're going to request various cinema's if they can run 4k 120 fps movies.

The new Ang Lee movie will be released in October. Here plays actor Will Smith a contract killer who has to deal with a younger clone of him. it's not the first film in which an increased frame rate has been applied. Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, also by Lee, was the first film to use 120 frames per second. At a time, this was experienced as very positive during a short preview, but there were no cinemas capable of projecting the film in 4k and with 3d and 120 fps. Peter Jackson previously released The Hobbit, which was shot in 48fps.

 

We finally get high refresh rate in movies... where is this going to?

I'm not paying for anything over 80FPS.  It is snake oil after that for movies.

People got sick from seeing one of the Hobbit movies in 60fps or something.....do they even make 120Hz motion picture projectors?

The Hobbit 1 and 2 had VFR 48 FPS in theaters and in some releases. Wasn't really accepted. For example - it's easier to spot that something is a prop, a mask or makeup.

Youtube 30 vs 60 is a very noticeable difference, I feel like the same would be true for 24 vs 120. I'm not paying more for it though unless they busted the 24 hz version by forgetting to put the 24 hz motion blur back in.

hobbit was actually 48 fps...

it seems like it would just cost as much... just that it is recorded differently. and the hardware in the cinema needs to be keepable

Remember all those arguments over FPS on the forums?  Basically I keep posting evidence the human eye and visual processing system can't identify more than about 76FPS.   Because computer games are interactive and there is a lot more feedback and processing going on that changes Frame rates there are other mechanisms by which we can identify a better performing system (i.e one with faster rates), however a movie has no feedback or lag potential.  After 80FPS there is no advantage to perception.

haven't been in that one... but that does sound interesting

 

but what if it doesn't come at a higher cost? then it might be interesting...

If a Cinema has a 3D projector it already supports higher refresh rates. Don't forget that.

They can put movies out at 500fps if it doesn't cost more for all I care.

 

About the only thing ii can see being a problem (which some people experienced with peter jacksons 48FPS) is motion sickness.  Because the brain is not used to seeing panning type visuals without blur.

they can at least do 60hz. 

 

even my small hometown has a older projector, but i doubt it is locked to 30hz/24hz. 

 

also the 24 or actually 23,88hz is kinda bullshit to be still lingering considering it was only kept due to analog TVs and their need to have color within a certain wavelenght

TV broadcast etc. was 25fps (50Hz PAL 576i) and 30fps (60Hz NTSC 480i).
