Youtube Censors SBSK Comment Sections

If this needs to be moved to a different section of the site i understand. I posted here because this sections gets lots of views, and i view this as a VERY important cause.

YouTube has taken the discriminatory action of disabling all of SBSK's comment sections despite their overwhelming positivity.  We need your assistance in persuading them to reverse this decision that will be extremely harmful to our movement towards inclusion of disability.

SBSK and other channels that feature minors as part of an over-reaching effort to combat child predation on their platform. They have chosen channels at random and disabled all of their comments without any sort of transparency or real communication with creators. Their actions were not all encompassing, rather many channels (especially those tied to large corporations and advertisers) have been left unaffected. They have no information for creators/communities on how long the comments will be disabled or if the action is permanent.

We at SBSK are fighting this blatant discrimination and censorship of the disability community. Our impact as a channel and a nonprofit is greatly limited without our comment section. We are heartbroken and angry for all that we have lost due to YouTube's actions. Chris and I have advocated since receiving the initial notice last week, but our pleas and outrage have been ignored. We are asking you, our community across the globe, to rally around us and to fight this discrimination.

"The disability community has fought too hard and long for it's voice. I know there has to be a way that we can work together to support the protection of minors on YouTube without isolating and silencing the disability community once more. We ask that you consider us for the group of channels who will be allowed comments while working with you to moderate them.  "

 


SBSK is a non profit channel created by Chris Ulmer. Special Books by Special Kids (SBSK) started as an idea to have his students become self-advocates by publishing their own books. It soon became one of the world’s greatest advocacy platforms. Chris travels all around the world interviewing all different and unique individuals with disabilities. Their Mission: Normalize the diversity of the human condition. I have personally followed chris since the beginning. From his first facebook video till now. He is one of the best human being's and a symbol of how we should all strive to be. I am very invested in his work as i also work with the disabled community where i live. I work for CMH in Michigan and see the issues these people face on a daily Basis. So far, youtube has REFUSED to communicate AT ALL with chris and the organization....  Thus the video above.

I doubt YouTube will do much. Their whole system is automated and as far as I know it's all to keep companies advertising on YouTube after the CP scandal.

That being said, I do hope this whole comments issue gets fixed, not just for SBSK but for everyone.

It's not discrimination, it's just an automated system not working properly.. Other videos including children have had comments disabled.

I can understand the majority of SBSK's concerns here but to call it discrimination is just blowing it way out of proportion.

All videos featuring children on YouTube have had comments disabled by default.

Some channels that YouTube consider to be in good standing are allowed to enable comments on their videos if children are present, but they have to moderate the comment section.

I seriously don't understand why YouTube is doing this rather than either making a specific opt-in mode (well basically, just disabling comments as you always could) for videos containing whatever or just moderating videos as they get reported.

Got to be honest here, if I came across this on YouTube itself or on FaceBook, I’d sign it, but now that it’s on here and seems more like a rant, probably not.

Because their method of going too far and slowly pulling back works. 

 

I mean this whole youtube and CP thing came out of nowhere, like overnight. There is nothing wrong with stepping in and saying what the fuck is going on here until youtube has time to resolve this issue. Yes it suck for creators but I rather youtube but their foot down and stop the sick shit that was being posted. 

 

Give it time, everyone is pretty positive there will be an opt-in.

Youtube is a FREE platform and relies heavily on ads (yes I know its not all) and if there are no ads, there is no money. Saying "all they care about is money" is idiotic. This isnt a multimillion dollar charity.

I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Yeah but the pedophile thing has been going on for almost 3 years now and various news sites covered it but nothing was done. Most of the videos were actively promoted by Youtube

I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

YouTube's decision to disable comments from videos featuring kids was a bad solution to a horrible problem.

It was really a rushed decision to do something to fix the problem, I doubt it's what YouTube ultimately wants and I'm sure YouTube will work something out that is a better solution for all involved. 

 

For now though, consider it like grounding an entire fleet of aircraft because a few of them crashed. It's not a final solution to the problem, but a necessary step to ensure safety while they work to identify the fault. Eventually they will identify the root cause of the problem, develop a solution, implement it, ensure it's safe, and then reinstate them back in to service.
