Replacement for hd 598s

trag1c

So i dun goofed and broke my Sennheiser HD 598 headphones after 5.5 years of use. I am looking at getting HD 650s to better take advantage of nearly 1TB of CD and Vinyl flac rips.  16bit 44.1KHz and 24bit 96KHz mostly.

My HD 598s were fantastic but since they're done now i want something better. Is the step up to the 650s worth it? Any other options i should consider? Amp and Dac to pair with them?

CPU: Intel i7 - 5820k @ 4.5GHz, Cooler: Corsair H80i, Motherboard: MSI X99S Gaming 7, RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB DDR4 2666MHz CL16,

GPU: ASUS GTX 980 Strix, Case: Corsair 900D, PSU: Corsair AX860i 860W, Keyboard: Logitech G19, Mouse: Corsair M95, Storage: Intel 730 Series 480GB SSD, WD 1.5TB Black

Display: BenQ XL2730Z 2560x1440 144Hz

Grab the 650 for 300 bones as replacement.  The 650 is a really flat sound.  It is used by music producers as they give a flat response and everything sounds the way the artist intended it to sound.

Asus Sabertooth x79 / 4930k @ 4500 @ 1.408v / Gigabyte WF 2080 RTX / Corsair VG 64GB @ 1866 & AX1600i & H115i Pro @ 2x Noctua NF-A14 / Carbide 330r Blackout

Scarlett 2i2 Audio Interface / KRK Rokits 10" / Sennheiser HD 650 / Logitech G Pro Wireless Mouse & G915 Linear & G935 & C920 / SL 88 Grand / Cakewalk / NF-A14 Int P12 Ex
AOC 40" 4k Curved / LG 55" OLED C9 120hz / LaCie Porsche Design 2TB & 500GB / Samsung 950 Pro 500GB / 850 Pro 500GB / Crucial m4 500GB / Asus M.2 Card

Are the 650s actually any better than the Mass Drop produced 6XX that is based on it? Why not save the $100?

Could always grab the 598 Special Editions off Amazon for like $180 too. I have a pair of those I use for watching TV in bed and I love them.

Ya thats what I heard. I've been thinking about upgrading for a while now but couldn't justify it as my hd 598s were good enough but now i have no headphones and my laptop speakers sound like ass.

I just did some resaerch on them and its just a paint job which has been verified by measurements and good ears.

598s are pretty good but the go for 300 CAD right now where as the 650s are 470 CAD or Sub 300CAD for the 6XXs. I originally got my pair for 135 CAD so it was a wicked deal but the price isn't great right now.

The only question is can i put up with laptop speakers that sound like ass till may when the 6XXs ship or play the extra 180 for no waiting period.

I'd hate to spend it. Probably find some other form of headphones to use until the 6XX got there, something I might find use with after. Like one of those cheap brand noise cancelling wireless sets, or a good pair of buds, good travel set.

A couple great amps to pair with a 6xx are JDS Labs atom or monoprice monolith liquid spark. And grab a dac as a dac

If you live in Canada another option to maybe grab are monoprice m560's they are open back plants they sound great. They are enormous flat but are a fun listen. You can always order em on Amazon and return them if you don't like them
